This paper studies a dynamical system that models the free recall dynamics of working *** model is an attractor neural network with n modules,named hypercolumns,and each module consists of m *** mild conditions on the connection weights between minicolumns,the authors investigate the long-term evolution behavior of the model,namely the existence and stability of equilibria and limit *** authors also give a critical value in which Hopf bifurcation ***,the authors give a sufficient condition under which this model has a globally asymptotically stable equilibrium consisting of synchronized minicolumn states in each hypercolumn,which implies that in this case recalling is *** simulations are provided to illustrate the proposed theoretical ***,a numerical example the authors give suggests that patterns can be stored in not only equilibria and limit cycles,but also strange attractors(or chaos).

Opiates and dopamine （DA） play key roles in learning and memory in humans and animals. Although interactions between these neurotransmitters have been found, their functional roles remain to be fully elucidated, and their dysfunction may contribute to human diseases and addiction. Here we investigated the interactions of morphine and dopaminergic neurotransmitter systems with respect to learning and memory in rhesus monkeys by using the Wisconsin General Test Apparatus （WGTA） delayed-response task. Morphine and DA agonists （SKF-38393, apomorphine and bromocriptine） or DA antagonists （SKF-83566, haloperidol and sulpiride） were co-administered to the monkeys 30 min prior to the task. We found that dose-patterned co-administration of morphine with D1 or D2 antagonists or agonists reversed the impaired spatial working memory induced by morphine or the compounds alone. For example, morphine at 0.01 mg/kg impaired spatial working memory, while morphine （0.01 mg/kg） and apomorphine （0.01 or 0.06 mg/kg） co-treatment ameliorated this effect. Our findings suggest that the interactions between morphine and dopaminergic compounds influence spatial working memory in rhesus monkeys. A better understanding of these interactive relationships may provide insights into human addiction.

working memory plays an important role in human cognition. This study investigated how working memory was encoded by the power of multichannel local field potentials （LFPs） based on sparse non negative matrix factorization （SNMF）. SNMF was used to extract features from LFPs recorded from the prefrontal cortex of four SpragueDawley rats during a memory task in a Y maze, with 10 trials for each rat. Then the powerincreased LFP components were selected as working memoryrelated features and the other components were removed. After that, the inverse operation of SNMF was used to study the encoding of working memory in the time frequency domain. We demonstrated that theta and gamma power increased significantly during the working memory task. The results suggested that postsynaptic activity was simulated well by the sparse activity model. The theta and gamma bands were meaningful for encoding working memory.

Astrocytes are increasingly recognized to play an active role in learning and memory,but whether neural inputs can trigger event-specific astrocytic Ca^(2+)dynamics in real time to participate in working memory remains unclear due to the difficulties in directly monitoring astrocytic Ca^(2+)dynamics in animals performing ***,using fiber photometry,we showed that population astrocytic Ca^(2+)dynamics in the hippocampus were gated by sensory inputs(centered at the turning point of the T-maze)and modified by the reward delivery during the encoding and retrieval ***,there was a strong inter-locked and antagonistic relationship between the astrocytic and neuronal Ca^(2+)dynamics with a 3-s phase ***,there was a robust synchronization of astrocytic Ca^(2+)at the population level among the hippocampus,medial prefrontal cortex,and *** inter-locked,bidirectional communication between astrocytes and neurons at the population level may contribute to the modulation of information processing in working memory.

The activity in sensory cortices and the prefrontal cortex （PFC） throughout the delay interval of working memory （WM） tasks reflect two aspects of WM-quality and quantity, respectively. The delay activity in sensory cortices is fine-tuned to sensory information and forms the neural basis of the precision of WM storage, while the delay activity in the PFC appears to represent behavioral goals and filters out irrelevant distractions, forming the neural basis of the quantity of task-relevant information in WM. The PFC and sensory cortices interact through different frequency bands of neuronal oscillation （theta, alpha, and gamma） to fulfill goal-directed behaviors.

working memory is one of the most important functions in our brain,which has been widely studied with unreal-life measured technologies.A functional near-infrared spectroscopy(fNIRS)instrument with a portable and low-cost design is developed,which is capable of providing hemodynamic measurement associated with brain function in real-life *** this instrument,we performed working memory studies involved in Chinese words encoding,verbal,and spatial stem recognition,which are mainly studied with other *** results show that fNIRS can well assess working memory activities,in comparison with the reported results mainly using other ***,we find that hemodynamic change in the prefrontal cortex during all working memory tasks is highly associated with subjects’behavioral *** is shown to be a promising alternative to the current methodologies for studying or assessing functional brain activities in natural condition.

Stress might exaggerate the compulsion and impair the working memory of patients with obsessivecompulsive disorder(OCD). This study evaluated the effect of stress on the cognitive neural processing of working memory in OCD and its clinical significance using a ‘‘number calculation working memory'' task. Thirty-eight patients and 55 gender-and education-matched healthy controls were examined. Stress impaired the performance of the manipulation task in patients. Healthy controls showed less engagement of the medial prefrontal cortex and striatum during the task under stress versus less stress,which was absent in the patients with OCD. The diagnosis 9 stress interaction effect was significant in the right fusiform, supplementary motor area, precentral cortex and caudate. The failure of suppression of the medial prefrontal cortex and striatum and stress-related hyperactivation in the right fusiform, supplementary motor area, precentral cortex, and caudate might be an OCD-related psychopathological and neural response to stress.

The ability to recall and recognize facts we experienced in the past is based on a complex mechanism in which several cerebral regions are implicated. Neuroimaging and lesion studies agree in identifying the frontal lobe as a crucial structure for memory processes, and in particular for working memory and episodic memory and their relationships. Furthermore, with the introduction of transcranial magnetic stimulation （TMS） a new way was proposed to investigate the relationships between brain correlates, memory functions and behavior. The aim of this review is to present the main findings that have emerged from experiments which used the TMS technique for memory analysis. They mainly focused on the role of the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex in memory process. Furthermore, we present state-of-the-art evidence supporting a possible use of TMS in the clinic. Specifically we focus on the treatment of memory deficits in depression and anxiety disorders.

Role of hippocampal dentate gyrus neurons in the protective effects of heat shock factor 1 on working memory

Increasing evidence suggests that heat shock factor 1 exerts endogenous protective effects on working memory under conditions of chronic psychological stress. However, the precise underlying mechanisms remain poorly understood. This study examined the protective factors affecting working memory in heat shock transcription factor 1 gene knockout mice. The results indicated that the number of correct T maze alternations decreased following mild chronic psychological stress in knockout mice. This change was accompanied by a decrease in neurogenesis and an increase in neuronal apoptosis in the hippocampal dentate gyrus. The number of correct T maze alternations was positively correlated with neurogenesis in hippocampal dentate gyrus, and negatively correlated with neuronal apoptosis. In wild type mice, no significant difference was detected in the number of correct T maze alternations or neuronal apoptosis in hippocampal dentate gyrus. These results indicate that the heat shock factor 1 gene has an endogenous protective role in working memory during mild chronic psychological stress associated with dentate gyrus neuronal apoptosis Moreover, dentate gyrus neurogenesis appears to participate in the protective mechanism.
