Study on the Variational Assimilation Technique for the Retrieval of wind fields from Doppler Radar Data

This paper introduces a variational assimilation technique for the retrieval of wind fields from Doppler radar data. The assimilated information included both the radial velocity （RV） and the movement of radar echo. In this assimilation technique, the key is transforming the movement of radar echo to a new radar measuring variable- ＂apparent velocity＂（AV）. Thus, the information of wind is added, and the indeterminacy of recovering two-dimensional wind only by AV was overcome effectively by combining RV with AV. By means of CMA GRAPES-3Dvar and CINRAD data, some experiments were performed. The results show that the method of retrieval of wind fields is useful in obtaining the construction of the weather system.

A New X-band Weather Radar System with Distributed Phased-Array Front-ends: Development and Preliminary Observation Results

A novel weather radar system with distributed phased-array front-ends was developed. The specifications and preliminary data synthesis of this system are presented, which comprises one back-end and three or more front-ends. Each front-end, which utilizes a phased-array digital beamforming technology, sequentially transmits four 22.5°-width beams to cover the 0°–90° elevational scan within about 0.05 s. The azimuthal detection is completed by one mechanical scan of0°–360° azimuths within about 12 s volume-scan update time. In the case of three front-ends, they are deployed according to an acute triangle to form a fine detection area(FDA). Because of the triangular deployment of multiple phased-array front-ends and a unique synchronized azimuthal scanning(SAS) rule, this new radar system is named Array Weather Radar(AWR). The back-end controls the front-ends to scan strictly in accordance with the SAS rule that assures the data time differences(DTD) among the three front-ends are less than 2 s for the same detection point in the FDA. The SAS can maintain DTD wind fields are derived from AWR data, by sampling of the interpolated grid, onto a rectangular grid of 100 m ×100 m ×100 m at a 12 s temporal resolution in the FDA. The first X-band single-polarized three-front-end AWR was deployed in field experiments in 2018 at Huanghua International Airport, China. Having completed the data synthesis and processing, the preliminary observation results of the first AWR are described herein.

Neural network wind retrieval from ERS-1/2 scatterometer data

A neural network methodology is presented to retrieve wind vectors from ERS - 1/2 scatterometer data. The wind directional ambiguities are eliminated by a circular median filter algorithm. All data come from ERS - 1/2 scatterometer data collocated pairs with CMCD4 vector. Comparing the results with CMCD4 and ECMWF wind vector,they agree well, which indicates that it is possible to extract wind vector from the ERS-1/2 scatterometer with the neural network method.

Numerical computation of hurricane effects on historic coastal hydrology in Southern Florida

Introduction:Numerical models are critical for assessing the effects of sea level rise(SLR),hurricanes,and storm surge on vegetation change in the Everglades National *** model must be capable of representing short-timescale hydrodynamics,salinity transport,and groundwater ***,there is also a strong need to adapt these numerical models to hindcast past conditions in order to examine long-term effects on the distribution of vegetation that cannot be determined using only the modern ***:Based on parameters developed for a numerical model developed for the recent 1996 to 2004 period,a hindcast model was developed to represent sea level and water management for the period of 1926 to 1932,constrained by the limited hydrology and meteorology data available from the historic *** hurricanewind and storm surge representations,required for the hindcast model,are based on information synthesized from modern storm data.A series of simulation scenarios with various hurricane representations inserted into both hindcast and recent numerical models were used to assess the utility of the storm representation in the model and compare the two ***:The comparison of the hindcast and recent models showed differences in the hydrology patterns that are consistent with known differences in water delivery systems and sea level rise.A 30×lower-resolution spatially variable wind grid for the hindcast produced similar results to the original high-resolution full wind grid representation of the recent *** effects on hydrologic patterns demonstrated with the simulations show hydrologic processes that could have a long-term effect on vegetation ***:The hindcast simulation estimated hydrologic processes for the 1926 to 1932 *** shows promise as a simulator in long-term ecological studies to test hypotheses based on theoretical or empirical-based studies at larger landscape scales.

Analysis of a Complex Weather Process and Services at Shanghai Pudong International Airport

A complex weather process at Shanghai Pudong International Airport during April 8-9 in 2017 was analyzed deeply to study the causes of low clouds and convective weather and how to provide services for control in the complex weather situation. The results showed that when clouds and visibility were low,the situation of wind fields should be analyzed carefully to forecast the weather more accurately. The actual situation of the weather was in line with the numerical forecast on the day,and numerical forecast had certain reference value for convection forecast. The prediction of cloud height was not as perfect as expected on the day,but corresponding services were provided to the regulatory agencies 3 h early,and they had sufficient time to make decisions. The meteorological services have also been well received by the regulatory authorities,which further explains the importance of forecast in advance.
