Zircon Trace Element Constraints on the Evolution of the Paleoproterozoic Birimian Granitoids of the west african craton(Ghana)

The Paleoproterozoie Birimian granitoids of the west african craton （WAC） in the northwestern part of Ghana, have been studied for their zircon trace elements concentrations to infer the source characteristics, origin, and magmatic evolution. The zircons in the granitoids have Th/U ratios ranging from 0.03 to 1.55, and display depleted light rare earth elements 0LREE） and enriched heavy rare earth elements （HREE） contents, characterized by pronounced positive to negative anomalies of Eu （Eu/Eu＊=0.14-0.98 and 1.01-6.06, respectively） and Ce （Ce/Ce＊=0.08-0.98 and 1.02-116, respectively）, which may imply that they were derived from both magmatic and hydrothermal sources. The geochemical plots of U/Yb vs. Y and Hf, the positive correlation between Hf and the other high field strength elements 0tFSE） and high rare earth elements （REE） contents, with enrichment in Ce and depletion in Eu, indicate that the granitoids possibly formed from partial melting of the crust. The trace elements characteristics （i.e., wide range of Hf, Ce/Ce＊, Th/U and Zr/Hf values） of the zircons suggest that crystallization of the magma occurred under variable oxidation states, which spanned over a longer period, implying that our data corroborate interpretations from studies of whole-rock geochemistry and geochronology on the granitoids of northwestern Ghana. This further indicates that the evolution of the Birimian granitoids in this part of the WAC occurred earlier than what had been reported in the literature.

Plutonites are part of the set of crystallines compose the Precambrian basement. Their study is capital because it allows participating in the debates on the geodynamic evolution of the west african craton. This study concerns granitoids and dioritoids of the North-East of Côte d’Ivoire located in the Man-Leo ridge structured by Eoeburnean magmatism. The petrographic and geochemistry constraints make it possible to say that these rock formations have evolved by the process of fractional crystallization. They have a hybrid origin (mantle and crust), metaluminous to peraluminous highlighted by geochemistry. Concerning the geotectonic context, these plutonites of the Baoulé-Mossi domain are emplacement in a context of subduction more precisely in a context of volcanic arc.

The late Neoproterozoïc Toubkal inlier (Ancient Massif of the High-Atlas, Morocco) contains two igneous basaltic series (Tircht and Sidi Chamharouch). Investigated rocks display characteristics of within-plate continental tholeiitic and are similar to rocks originated in orogenic contexts. The geochemical results allow the assumption that subduction active processes are indirectly responsible for the genesis of theses rocks. The orogenic signature is linked probably to a Pan-african magmatic source previously metasomatized in the northern margin of the west african craton.

Geochemical Signatures of Séguéla Peridotites in the west african craton

The present study deals with peridotites found in the paleo-proterozoic domain of the Leo Man Shield, Séguéla region, west-central of Côte d’Ivoire. Results show that Séguéla peridotites are composed of lherzolites, dunites and harzburgites. However, iherzolites are the most abundant. The phenocrysts in these rocks are olivine most often serpentinised, and pyroxenes, represented by diopside and enstatite. Amphiboles are divided into two groups: magmatic amphiboles and those from the destabilization of clinopyroxene. Spinels have CrO3 content which varies between 28% and 37%, Al2O3 between 33% - 41% and MgO is equal to 18%;they are poor in TiO2 and do not contain zinc oxide. Séguéla peridotites are characterised by a negative anomaly in Nb-Ta, associated with an enrichment of lithophilic elements and light rare earth elements with a fractionation rate (La/Yb) which varies between 46.22 and 150.72 and heavy rare earth elements, and HFSE depletion, which may suggest that were formed in an art context, that is, a mantle enriched by fluids from a subduction zone. However, another hypothesis could be considered, that of the interaction between the mantle and magmas in a subduction zone context.
