A pilot scale fixed bed biofilm reactor used for treating municipal wastewater was modelled to examine greenhouse gas emissions under different operational parameters. For the calculations, GPS-X 6.3 commercial simulation tool was applied, which coupled the biokinetic modelling with a GHG estimator. Model calibration was based on a twelve-day set of measurements, where the system was operated under near steady-state condition. Simulation results reflected that direct emissions from biological processes are more significant than indirect emissions originating from energy consumption. Optimizing the operational parameters of a wastewater treatment.system, a significant amount of GHG emission can be spared （e.g. optimal setup for internal recycle flow and dissolved oxygen levels）, whereas, environmental factors such as temperature can also have a remarkable effect on GHG emissions： rising temperature causes faster biological reactions, increasing the production of greenhouse gases, especially methane, from the inner layers of the thick biofilm.

Fluid flow and mixing phenomenon have a significant impact on coagulation and flocculation processes. Particles dissipating the turbulent kinetic energy increase the efficiency of collision, grow in size and incorporate phosphate from the wastewater Only certain flocks can be separated depending on their stability, size, density, etc.. According to the literature the velocity gradient of the flow （G-value） is the main design parameter of the flocculators, but there is a need to take into account at least the flocks age, too. In this paper, it presents a novel approach to determine the efficiency of flocculators using local mean age theory, residence time distribution and dimensional analysis. Calculations were performed for two constructions of cascade reactors---one with small baffles and one without these; hydraulical performance and the achievable conversion were compared. As a result, the flocculator with small baffles proved to be more efficient than the traditional construction.

A stochastic celhflar automaton （CA） model for activated sludge system （ASS） is for- mulated by a series of transition functions upon realistic treatment.processes, and it is tested by comparing with ordinary differential equations （ODEs） of ASS. CA system performed by empirical parameters can reflect the characteristics of fluctuation, com- plexity and strong non-linearity of ASS. The results show that the predictions of CA are approximately similar to the dynamical behaviors of ODEs. Based on the extreme experimental system with complete cell recycle in model validation, the dynamics of biomass and substrate are predicted accurately by CA, but the large errors exist in ODEs except for integrating more spatially complicated factors. This is due to that the strong mechanical stress from spatial crowding effect is ignored in ODEs, while CA system as a spatially explicit model takes account of local interactions. Despite its extremely simple structure, CA still can capture the essence of ASS better than ODEs, thus it would be very useful in predicting long-term dynamics in other similar systems.

4,4’-diaminostilbene-2, 2’-disulfonic acid (DSD acid) manufacturing wastewater was treated by a macroporous resin in a fixed-bed column. The results showed that this method was suitable for removal of chemical oxygen demands (COD) and color. About 91% COD and 99.5% color removal were obtained under the optimum adsorption conditions, i.e. temperature 20℃, flow rate 1bed volume/hour (BV/hr) and pH1-2. The resin was efficiently regenerated with aqueous sodium hydroxide and water. Furthermore, 65.5% of 4,4’-dinitrostilbene-2, 2’-disulfonic acid (DNS) could be recovered from wastewater for possible recycling to the manufacturing process. The adsorption capacity of resin remained constant during the repetition process of adsorption and desorption.

The objective of this study is to investigate the differences in organic compounds that are present in hospital and municipal wastewater samples. Two samples with the same COD （chemical oxygen demand） values were chosen for this study. The results have shown that both samples consist of the same compounds with low molecular weights and high polarities in high concentrations. The hospital wastewater consisted of more compounds arithmetically. Differences were found in the organic compound with low molecular weight and low polarities. Pharmaceutical compounds such as caffeine, acetanilide and phenacetin were detected only in the hospital wastewater.
