Toward sustainable Waste management in small islands developing states: integrated waste-to-energy solutions in Maldives context

Effective Waste management is a major challenge for Small Island Developing States (SIDS) like Maldives due to limited land availability. Maldives exemplifies these issues as one of the most geographically dispersed countries, with a population unevenly distributed across numerous islands varying greatly in size and population density. This study provides an in-depth analysis of the unique Waste management practices across different regions of Maldives in relation to its natural and socioeconomic context. Data shows Maldives has one of the highest population density and per capita waste generation among SIDS, despite its small land area and medium GDP per capita. Large disparities exist between the densely populated capital Male’ with only 5.8 km2 area generating 63% of waste and the ~194 scattered outer islands with ad hoc Waste management practices. Given Male’s dense population and high calorific waste, incineration could generate up to ~30 GW/a energy and even increase Maldives’ renewable energy supply by 200%. In contrast, decentralized anaerobic digestion presents an optimal solution for outer islands to reduce waste volume while providing over 40%–100% energy supply for daily cooking in local families. This timely study delivers valuable insights into designing context-specific waste-to-energy systems and integrated waste policies tailored to Maldives’ distinct regions. The framework presented can also guide other SIDS facing similar challenges as Maldives in establishing sustainable, ecologically sound Waste management strategies.

Deep Learning-Based Swot Analysis in Construction and Demolition Waste management

Researchers worldwide have employed a varied array of sources to cal-culate the successful management of Construction and Demolition(C&DW).Limited research has been undertaken in the domain of Construction and Demoli-tion Waste management(C&DWM)and consequently leaving a large gap in the availability of effective management techniques.Due to the limited time available for building removal and materials collection,preparing for building materials reuse at the end of life is frequently a challenging task.In this research work Con-volutional Neural Network-Long Short-Term Memory(CNN-LSTM)is proposed to predict the number of waste materials that are obtained from a building at the end of its useful life.As a result,an effective Waste management(WM)plan has been established through SWOT analysis.The results of the study reveal that,given fundamental building characteristics,it is possible to predict the number of materials that would be collected with high precision from a building after demolition.The proposed deep learning models achieved an average R-squared value of 0.98 and a Mean Absolute Error of 18.1 and 20.14 better than existing methods such as random forest,CNN,and DBN(Data Bus Network).

Sustainable management of campus fallen leaves through low-temperature pyrolysis and application in Pb immobilization

Realizing campus sustainability requires the environmental-friendly and economical treatment of tremendous fallen leaves.Producing fallen leaf biochar at a low temperature is a candidate approach.In this study,six common types of fallen leaves on the campus were pyrolyzed at 300℃.The obtained biochars were characterized and the adsorption mechanisms of lead(Pb)by the fallen leaf biochars were investigated.The adsorption capacity of leaf biochar for Pb was relatively high,up to 209 mg/g(Yulania denudata leaf biochar).Adsorption of Pb onto active sites was the rate-limiting step for most leaf biochars.But for Platanus leaf biochar,intraparticle diffusion of Pb^(2+)dominated owing to the lowest adsorption capacity.However,the highest exchangeable Pb fraction(27%)indicated its potential for removing aqueous Pb^(2+).Ginkgo and Prunus cerasifera leaf biochar immobilized Pb by surface complexation and precipitation as lead oxalate.Hence,they were suitable for soil heavy metal remediation.This study shed the light on the sustainable utilization of campus fallen leaves and the application of fallen leaf biochars in heavy metal remediation.

The road to sustainable use and Waste management of plastics in Portugal

As a European Union(EU)member,Portugal must comply with reductions in plastic waste.In Portugal,the 330 items/100 m of beach litter,comprising up to 3.9 million pieces and of which 88%is plastic,is higher than the EU median(149 items/100 m)and must be reduced to 20 items/100 m(94%).Integrative measures are needed to reduce littering and improve plastics’use and disposal under the circular economy.Of this 414 kt of plastic packaging waste,163 kt were declared plastic packaging,140 kt subjected to recycling,and 94 kt to energy recovery.The current recycling rate of plastic packaging(34%)should be improved to reach EU recycling averages(42%)and goals and to provide widespread benefits,considering revenues of 167€/t.As a net importer of waste,Portugal could benefit from the valorization of imported waste.Besides increased recycling,pyrolysis and gasification could provide short-term alternatives for producing value-added substances from plastic waste,such as hydrogen,consistent with the National Plan of Hydrogen and improving ongoing regulations on single-use plastics.This manuscript provides an integrative view of plastics in Portugal,from use to disposal,providing specific recommendations under the circular economy.

Carbon footprint assessment for the Waste management sector： A comparative analysis of China and Japan

Waste management is becoming a crucial issue in modem society owing to rapid urbanization and the increasing generation of municipal solid waste （MSW）. This paper evaluates the carbon footprint of the Waste management sector to identify direct and indirect carbon emissions, waste recycling carbon emission using a hybrid life cycle assessment and input-output analysis. China and Japan was selected as case study areas to highlight the effects of different industries on Waste management. The results show that the life cycle carbon footprints for waste treatment are 59.01 million tons in China and 7.01 million tons in Japan. The gap between these footprints is caused by the different Waste management systems and treatment processes used in the two countries. For indirect carbon footprints, China＇s material carbon footprint and deprecia- tion carbon footprint are much higher than those of Japan, whereas the purchased electricity and heat carbon footprint in China is half that of Japan. China and Japan have similar direct energy consumption carbon footprints. However, CO2 emissions from MSW treatment processes in China （46.46 million tons） is significantly higher than that in Japan （2.72 million tons）. The corresponding effects of waste recycling on CO2 emission reductions are consider- able, up to 181.37 million tons for China and 96.76 million tons for Japan. Besides, measures were further proposed for optimizing Waste management systems in the two countries. In addition, it is argued that the advanced experience that developed countries have in Waste management issues can provide scientific support for waste treatment in developing countries such as China.

Building Resilience Through Disaster Waste management——UN Environment's Experiences and Approaches

Integrating disaster waste issue is a critical component of making humanitarian action fit for the future,anticipating global risks and challenges such as increased vulnerability due to climate change and environmental degradation.This requires a fundamental shift towards a model that not only strengthens the response to crises but also learns and adapts in order to anticipate and act before such waste garnered.This article conducted analyses on the characteristics of disasters in the past two decades.Uncertainties confound disaster Waste management,including the timing and magnitude of each disaster,and the amounts and types of waste that will be generated.For these reasons alone,disaster Waste management must be an integral part of development planning and processes.Making 10 years since the 2008 Wenchuan earthquake,this article highlights that disaster Waste management is not only debris clearance or Waste management following a disaster,but also includes prevention and pre-disaster preparedness aspects in terms of enhancing resilience of local communities.Such"mainstreaming,"ensures that disaster Waste management(DWM)will be treated as a priority issue,on an ongoing basis.Based on UN Environment's experiences and approaches,this paper emphasises that preparedness is the key,and that priority should be accorded to integrating disaster contingency planning in national and city level Waste management strategies as well as mainstreaming Waste management issues within broader disaster preparedness and response plans and actions.It is envisaged that the issues presented and the gaps identified in this paper will provide a basis for future comprehensive and cohesive research on disaster Waste management.In turn,this research can lead to better preparedness and response on disaster Waste management.

Medical Waste management in Iraq:a case study of Baghdad

There is a lack of information about medical Waste management in Iraq.This study aims to monitor and evaluate the cur-rent situation of medical Waste management in Baghdad as it represents the capital and the biggest populated city in Iraq.About 32%of hospitals are located in Baghdad.Ten state-owned hospitals in Baghdad with the biggest bed capacity were investigated.The study used structured interviews with staff in charge of Waste management in the sampled hospitals to col-lect data.The results showed that the generation rate of medical waste in the ten hospitals was 0.5 kg/(bed·day).The study also found that there were insufficient,ineffective,and improper isolation,collection,storing,processing,and safe disposal of medical wastes in the sampled public hospitals of Baghdad.The study recommended that the Iraqi Ministry of Health takes extensive and quick effective measures to better monitor and evaluate medical Waste management and provide ongoing training to personnel responsible for Waste management in the hospitals.

The combined properties of low cost,lightweight,and resistance to chemicals and corrosion has increased the use of plastic materials for packaging and storage purposes in preference to other materials.Consequently,there is a continued increase in their proportion in domestic solid wastes worldwide as well as the concern of their impacts on the environment.Most developed and developing countries have put in place and continue to improve their plastic waste disposal,collection,and recycling methods to reduce these impacts.In Nigeria with a population of about 186 million,there are little or no available data on the use of plastic materials in relation to city populations,their disposal,collection,and recycling methods.There are a few numbers of plastic waste recycling companies in a fewer number of cities and disposal practices for the greater percentage of the plastic wastes that are not captured for recycling possess immediate and future danger for the environment.This work reviews the consumption of plastics,its waste generation,collection,and treatment in Nigeria and a few selected countries.The problems associated with inadequate management of the wastes were emphasized and recommendations were proffered to not only highlight research and investment opportunities that are inherent in plastic Waste management in Nigeria,but also provide a background for the formulation of sustainable regulatory policies by the government to address the problems.

Rapid economic growth and production patterns have increased plastic consumption,plastic waste generation,and environmental pollution burden on both land and water habitats across the globe.The use of PET(polyethylene terephthalate)bottles in packaging has increased tremendously and accounts for a significant proportion of the plastic waste generated in Nigeria,along with its environment and economic cost.Achieving sustainable development goals of sustainable cities and communities,responsible consumption and production,ensure access to safe water and sanitation has necessitated the need for an efficient PET bottle Waste management system.This study analyzed the PET bottle system in Nigeria and proposes an integrated PET bottle model/system for sustainable Waste management,resource conservation,improved environmental sanitation,and economic development in Nigeria.Also,the need for the adoption of a holistic and indigenous approach in the formulation of the national policy on plastic Waste management is emphasized,as it will encourage the citizens’participation and financial investments in Waste management.

The development of bio-sourced materials is essential to ensuring sustainable construction;it is considered a locomotive of the green economy.Furthermore,it is an abundant material in our country,to which very little attention is being given.This work aims to valorize the waste of the trunks of banana trees to be used in construction.Firstly,the physicochemical properties of the fiber,such as the percentage of crystallization and its morphology,have been determined by X-ray diffraction tests and scanning electron microscopy to confirm the potential and the impact of the mode of drying on the quality of the banana fibers,with the purpose to promote the use of this material in construction.Secondly,the results obtained with the gypsum matrix allowed us to note a preponderant improvement in the composite’s thermal properties thanks to the variation of the banana fiber additive.Thirdly,the impact of the nature of the banana fiber distribution(either fiber mixed in matrix or fiber series model)on the flexural and compressive strengths of the composites was studied.The results obtained indicate that the insulation gain reaches up to 40%.It depends on the volume fraction and type of distribution of the banana fibers.However,the thermal inertia of the composites developed,represented by thermal diffusivity and thermal effusivity,was studied.Results indicate a gain of 40%and 25%,respectively,in terms of thermal diffusivity and thermal effusivity of the developed composites compared to plaster alone.Concerning the mechanical properties,the flexural strength depends on the percentage of the volume fraction of banana fibers used,and it can reach 20%more than the flexural strength of plaster;nevertheless,there is a significant loss in terms of the compressive strength of the studied composites.The results obtained are confirmed by the microstructure of the fiber banana.In fact,the morphology of the banana fibers was improved by the drying process.It reduces the amorphous area and improves the cellulosic crystalline surfaces,w
