Hong Kong has a long history of applying masonry retaining walls to provide horizontal platforms and stabilize man-made *** to the sub-tropical climate,some masonry retaining walls are colonized by *** weather,such as typhoons and heavy rains,may cause rupture or root failure of those trees,thus resulting in instability of the retaining walls.A monitoring and warning system for the movement of masonry retaining walls and sway of trees has been designed with the application of fiber Bragg grating(FBG)sensing *** monitoring system is also equipped with a solar power system and 4G data transmission *** key functions of the proposed monitoring system include remote sensing and data access,early warning,and real-time data *** setups and working principles of the monitoring systems and related transducers are *** feasibility,accuracy,serviceability and reliability of this monitoring system have been checked by in-site calibration tests and four-month ***,a two-level interface has been developed for data *** monitoring results show that the monitored masonry retaining wall had a reversible movement up to 2.5 mm during the monitoring ***,it is found that the locations of the maximum strain on trees depend on the crown spread of trees.

Unsignalized intersections are identified as the critical locations due to higher number of road crashes at these *** primary causes of crashes at unsignalized intersections are limited sight distance,incorrect assessment of gaps by drivers on the minor road,and higher speeds of vehicles on the major *** an effort to improve safety and reduce the severity of crashes at unsignalized intersections,an intelligent transportation system(ITS)called the intersection conflict warning system(ICWS)has been *** ICWS consists of an activated warning sign and sensors that detect vehicles approaching the *** paper aims to summarize the performance evaluation of ICWS that has been published in the *** review commences with an overview of the purpose of designing and installing ICWS at unsignalized *** then discusses driving performance measures considered to evaluate the effectiveness of ICWS in three different environments,i.e.,real world,driving simulator,and simulations,and their results are *** paper also discusses the type of sensors used to detect vehicles approaching the intersection and their accuracy in vehicle *** results reveal that ICWS had substantially improved driver *** the presence of ICWS,drivers resulted in shorter reaction time,lower approach speed,increased critical gap acceptance,and reduction in *** improvement in the performance of ICWS can be achieved by educating drivers about the sign,maintaining system reliability,and further examining the effect of various traffic factors,driver factors,and environmental factors on *** findings of this study can help researchers and engineers to design a better ICWS that can greatly enhance driving performance and safety at unsignalized intersections.

In recent years, the increasing frequency of debris flow demands enhanced effectiveness and efficiency of warning systems. Effective warning systems are essential not only from an economic point of view but are also considered as a frontline approach to alleviate hazards. Currently, the key issues are the imbalance between the limited lifespan of equipment, the relatively long period between the recurrences of such hazards, and the wide range of critical rainfall that trigger these disasters. This paper attempts to provide a stepwise multi-parameter debris flow warning system after taking into account the shortcomings observed in other warning systems. The whole system is divided into five stages. Differentwarning levels can be issued based on the critical rainfall thresholds. Monitoring starts when early warning is issued and it continues with debris flow near warning, triggering warning, movement warning and hazard warning stages. For early warning, historical archives of earthquake and drought are used to choose a debris flow-susceptible site for further monitoring. Secondly, weather forecasts provide an alert of possible near warning. Hazardous precipitation, model calculation and debris flow initiation tests, pore pressure sensors and water content sensors are combined to check the critical rainfall and to publically announce a triggering warning. In the final two stages, equipment such as rainfall gauges, flow stage sensors, vibration sensors, low sound sensors and infrasound meters are used to assess movement processes and issue hazardwarnings. In addition to these warnings, communitybased knowledge and information is also obtained and discussed in detail. The proposed stepwise, multiparameter debris flow monitoring and warning system has been applied in Aizi valley China which continuously monitors the debris flow activities.

Construction of Sovereign Debt Crisis Warning System:A Study...

Study on remote monitoring system for landslide hazard based on Wireless Sensor Network and its application

Based on the data of sovereign debt crises in the emerging market countries,this study employs the Logit model and the Support Vector Machine method to construct a sovereign debt crises warning system with higher forecasting *** empirical result shows that the five variables,the proportion of interest to external debt,the years from the last crisis,the real GDP growth,the ratio between the principal and interests due and the reserve,and public external debt ratio,can fairly play a warning role in forecasting the next occurrence of sovereign debt *** with similar studies,this system has clear advantages in the prediction accuracy,Type I error rate and Type II error ***,the use of the Support Vector Machine method also has clear advantage in the improvement of prediction accuracy.

Based on Beidou satellite communication platform, sliding force remote monitoring and warning system was widely used in Lingbao Luoshan gold ore, which had achieved remarkable social and economical benefits. However, there is one monitoring point at every 1 000 m2, and their distribution is so discrete that it will no doubt increase construction and operation cost if every monitoring point was installed a Beidou subscriber machine. Therefore, based on Zigbee wireless sensor network technology, network structure and the nodes, embed wireless sensor node in remote monitoring and warning system, a base platform of local wireless sensor network is formed, and it can combine punctiform monitoring information with planar network and transmit concentrated information through Beidou satellite terminal machine; as a result, this largely expands the transmission distance of monitoring data

Following the Chichi Earthquake （ML=7.3） in 1999, sediment-related disasters, such as landslides and debris flows, have become more frequent in Taiwan. Because engineering structures cannot be fully and rapidly emplaeed, the government has initiated non-structural hazard mitigation programs. Initially, community debris flow evacuation drills were promoted in 2000. Typhoon Toraji caused numerous debris flow events in July 2001, and some communities evacuated according to the drills, significantly reducing the numbers of possible casualties. Based on that result, the government expanded the program for evacuation drills. Secondly, the early warning system created after the Chichi Earthquake will prevent many potential future casualties. Rainfall threshold values for debris flow warnings in different areas are determined from information received from local weather stations and modified for local geomorphologic situations. Real- time information is gradually being integrated to create a debris flow disaster warning system, the goal of which is to provide warnings to zones in which debris flows are likely. The warning system was launched in 2005 and has two levels of alarms： yellow and red. The final, red alarm triggers enforced evacuation. Overall, the decrease in casualties from debris flows during the decade after the Chichi Earthquake is not the result of a decrease in number or severity of sediment related disasters, but is more directly related to the gradually improved early warning and evacuation system. However, the compound hazards resulting from Typhoon Morakotin 2009 remind us of the ongoing need for improving the existing mitigation system.

The monitoring of urban slopes employing in-situ equipment seeks to avoid the loss of human lives midst emergency events like landslides. Cemaden (Brazilian National Centre for Monitoring and Early warnings of Natural Disasters) has a pilot network of soil moisture and rain gauge stations located in urban slopes to understand, prevent, and mitigate landslides. Due to the large volume of data produced by this system there was a need for tools for data retrieval and visualization. This paper describes the Solam (Environmental Data Observation system) software which generates automated graphs that enable researchers to analyze and comprise data from soil moisture sensors and rain gauge stations. Those results allow to research moisture variations in six different sensor levels (from 0.5 m to 3 m deep) and precipitation indexes (hourly and accumulated rainfall) for the established period. This analysis will provide information to set critical environmental thresholds on base recorded landslides.
