In 1964, Murray Gell-Mann [1], the Nobel Prize winner in Physics, and George Zweig [2] separately proposed the quark model.The model revealed for the first time that a class of particles, baryons including protons and neutrons, were not elementary, instead were formed by three quarks (qqq), and another class, mesons,were made of quark-antiquark pairs (qqà). The quark model can successfully describe all the baryons and mesons (collectively referred to as hadrons) observed in the last century, thereby helps to explain how the strong force binds the quarks to form a particle.

Language serves for the expression of mind.By analyzing the conversations in the short story The Rocking-Horse winner from the perspective of Grice’s cooperative principle,the paper draws a conclusion about the distinct personalities of the protago nists in the novel.According to the findings,the conversational implicature of the protagonists actually reflects their different char acters which are or aren’t the results of the industrial background,hypocritical or pure,greedy or diligent.In this way,the study hopes to provide readers an access to a deep understanding of the story and drive them to care more about the ever important yet complex parents-child,especially mother-child relation.

The option of organizing E-auctions to purchase electricity required for anticipated peak load period is a new one for utility companies.To meet the extra demand load,we develop electricity combinatorial reverse auction(CRA)for the purpose of procuring power from diverse energy sources.In this new,smart electricity market,suppliers of different scales can participate,and homeowners may even take an active role.In our CRA,an item,which is subject to several trading constraints,denotes a time slot that has two conflicting attributes,electricity quantity and price.To secure electricity,we design our auction with two bidding rounds:round one is exclusively for variable energy,and round two allows storage and nonintermittent renewable energy to bid on the remaining items.Our electricity auction leads to a complex winner determination(WD)task that we represent as a resource procurement optimization problem.We solve this problem using multi-objective genetic algorithms in order to find the trade-off solution that best lowers the price and increases the quantity.This solution consists of multiple winning suppliers,their prices,quantities and schedules.We validate our WD approach based on large-scale simulated datasets.We first assess the time-efficiency of our WD method,and we then compare it to well-known heuristic and exact WD techniques.In order to gain an exact idea about the accuracy of WD,we implement two famous exact algorithms for our constrained combinatorial procurement problem.

CAS Projects Winning State S&T Awards in 2005

At the National S&T Conference held on 9 January, 2006 in Beijing, CAS received 43 prizes from China's 2005 S&T awards in the capacity of the lead research institution (or principal researcher). Among the prize-winning projects, 17 were honored with the second prizes of the National Award for Natural Sciences, eight with the second prizes of the National Award for Invention, and 18 with the second prizes from the National Award for S&T Progress. A total of 314 projects received the 2005 national S&T awards nationwide. Of them, 38 were second-place winners from the National Award for Natural Sciences (first-place winners were vacant); 40 won the National Award for Invention (one first-place winner) and 236 won the National Award for S&T Progress (18 first-place winners). In addition, five foreign scientists received National Award for S&T Cooperation. The following is a brief account of some of the CAS projects.

winner determination is one of the main challenges in combinatorial auctions. However, not much work has been done to solve this problem in the case of reverse auctions using evolutionary techniques. This has motivated us to propose an improvement of a genetic algorithm based method, we have previously proposed, to address two important issues in the context of combinatorial reverse auctions: determining the winner(s) in a reasonable processing time, and reducing the procurement cost. In order to evaluate the performance of our proposed method in practice, we conduct several experiments on combinatorial reverse auctions instances. The results we report in this paper clearly demonstrate the efficiency of our new method in terms of processing time and procurement cost.
