Participatory Mapping and Visualization of Local Knowledge:An Example from Eberbach, Germany

A rise in the number of flood-affected people and areas has increased the interest in new methods and concepts that account for this *** are integrated into disaster risk reduction processes through participatory approaches and can provide valuable up-to-date local *** a field study in Eberbach(Baden–Wuerttemberg,Germany)sketch maps and questionnaires were used to capture local knowledge about *** on a previous study on urban flooding in Santiago de Chile,the tools were adapted and applied to river flooding in the city of Eberbach,which is regularly flooded by the Neckar River,a major river in southwest *** empirical database of the study comprises 40 participants in the study area and 40 in a control *** of the participants in each group are residents and half are *** sampling was used,and the questionnaires aimed to gather demographic information and explore what factors,such as property,influence the risk perception of the study *** results show that residents identify a larger spatial area as at risk than pedestrians,and owning property leads to higher risk *** flood type influenced the choice of the base maps for the sketch *** river flooding,one map with an overview of the area was sufficient,while for urban flooding a second map with more details of the area also enables the marking of small *** information gathered can complement authoritative data such as from flood *** participatory approach also increases the communication and trust between local governments,researchers,and citizens.

Crowdsourcing has become a popular means to acquire data about the Earth and its environment inexpensively,but the data-sets obtained are typically imperfect and of unknown *** common imperfections with crowdsourced data are the contributions from cheats or spammers and missing *** effect of the latter two imperfections on a method to evaluate the accuracy of crowdsourced data via a latent class model was *** simulated and real data-sets,it was shown that the method is able to derive useful information on the accuracy of crowdsourced data even when the degree of imperfection was very *** practical potential of this ability to obtain accuracy information within the geospatial sciences and the realm of Digital Earth applications was indicated with reference to an evaluation of building damage maps produced by multiple bodies after the 2010 earthquake in ***,the method allowed data-sets to be ranked in approximately the correct order of accuracy and this could help ensure that the most appropriate data-sets are used.

The purpose of this paper is to contribute to the definition of a European perspective on Digital Earth(DE),identify some actions that can contribute to raise the awareness of DE in the European context and thus strengthen the European contribution to the International Society for Digital Earth(ISDE).The paper identifies opportunities and synergies with the current policy priorities in Europe(Europe 2020,Innovation Union and Digital Agenda)and highlights a number of key areas to advance the development of DE from a European perspective:(1)integrating scientific research into DE;(2)exploiting the Observation Web with human-centred sensing;and(3)governance,including the establishment of stronger linkages across the European landscape of funding streams and *** paper is offered also as a contribution to the development of this new vision of DE to be presented at the next International DE Conference in Perth,Australia,in August *** global recognition of this new vision will then reinforce the European component and build a positive feedback loop for the further implementation of DE across the globe.

A Method for Developing Seismic Intensity Maps from Twitter Data

Aim of this article, is to present a methodology for extracting macroseismic intensity information and producing seismic intensity maps from VGI （volunteered geographic information）. As a VGI source for obtaining and assessing macroseismic observations, the authors chose twitter. Our methodology is validated in two recent earthquakes occurred in Greece： the January 26, 2014 ML = 5.8 in Kefallinia, and the November 17, 2014 ML = 5.2 in Evoikos. Twitter data published within the first 6 h, 12 h, 24 h and 48 h after the earthquake occurrence were analyzed to develop seismic intensity maps. Those maps were evaluated through intensity maps for the same earthquakes, published by international institutes. Evaluation results provide a strong empiric evidence for the credibility of our methodology, the accuracy of the produced seismic intensity maps and accentuate VGI, generated by twitter, as an adequate alternative source for collecting macroseismic information.
