AIM: To determine the vision-related quality-of-life of glaucoma patients and the association between clinical and socioeconomic factors, and vision-related quality-of-life.METHODS: This was a cross-sectional study. Consecutive patients with glaucoma were interviewed using a modified 25-item National Eye Institute Visual Function Questionnaire(VFQ-25) by a single interviewer. Statistical analysis was done to find associations between patient variables and vision-related quality-of-life scores. Confidentiality and anonymity were maintained.RESULTS: Ninety-six participants were recruited in the study. There were 44 males and the mean age for males and females was 65.7 and 69.5y, respectively. The mean composite score was 71.2(with a maximum possible score of 100), with the highest mean score in the colour vision subscale(89.8) and the lowest mean score in the driving subscale(34.0). Worse visual acuity(Pvision-related quality-of-life in Jamaican glaucoma patients is comparable to that of glaucoma patients in the Barbados Eye Study and other international studies using the VFQ-25 questionnaire. Worse quality-of-life scores are associated with poorer visual acuity, longer duration of glaucoma, more glaucoma medications, and sociodemographic factors such as male gender and rural residence.

vision-based Recognition Algorithm for Up-To-Date Indoor Digital Map Generations at Damaged Buildings

When firefighters are engaged in search and rescue missions inside a building at a risk of collapse,they have difficulty in field command and rescue because they can only simplymonitor the situation inside the building utilizing old building drawings or robots.To propose an efficient solution for fast search and rescue work of firefighters,this study investigates the generation of up-to-date digital maps for disaster sites by tracking the collapse situation,and identifying the information of obstacles which are risk factors,using an artificial intelligence algorithm based on low-cost robots.Our research separates the floor by using the mask regional convolutional neural network(R-CNN)algorithm,and determines whether the passage is collapsed or not.Then,in the case of a passage that can be searched,the floor pattern of the obstacles that exist on the floor that has not collapsed is analyzed,and obstacles are searched utilizing an image processing algorithm.Here,we can detect various unknown as well as known obstacles.Furthermore,the locations of obstacles can be estimated using the pixel values up to the bounding box of an existing detected obstacle.We conduct experiments using the public datasets collected by Carnegie Mellon university(CMU)and data collected by manipulating a low-cost robot equipped with a smartphone while roaming five buildings in a campus.The collected data have various floor patterns for objectivity and obstacles that are different from one another.Based on these data,the algorithm for detecting unknown obstacles of a verified study and estimating their sizes had an accuracy of 93%,and the algorithm for estimating the distance to obstacles had an error rate of 0.133.Through this process,we tracked collapsed passages and composed up-to-date digital maps for disaster sites that include the information of obstacles that interfere with the search and rescue work.

Association between vision and cognitive function among community-dwelling older adults in Selangor,Malaysia

AIM:To determine the association between distance and near visual acuity(VA)and cognitive function among older adults in Selangor,Malaysia.METHODS:A total of 230 older adults(age≥60y)participated in this study.Habitual distance and near VA were measured using the Early Treatment Diabetic Retinopathy Study Chart and Lighthouse Near Visual Acuity Chart,respectively.Global cognitive function was assessed using the Mini-Mental State Examination(M-MSE)and the Malay language version of the Montreal Cognitive Assessment(M-MoCA).Digit Symbol(DS)subtest was used to measure information processing.RESULTS:No significant association was observed between vision and M-MSE and M-MoCA scores.However,poor distance and near VA were found to be significantly associated with low DS scores[distance VA:β=-0.01,R2=0.1,P=0.02;odds ratio(OR)=2.84,95%confidence interval(CI),1.10-7.33,P=0.03;near VA:β=-0.05,R2=0.08,P=0.00;OR=3.32,95%CI,1.28-8.59,P=0.01].CONCLUSION:Poor vision is associated with a decline in information processing in older adults and substantiates the importance of preserving good vision in maintaining cognitive function.

Intelligent Risk-Identification Algorithm with vision and 3D LiDAR Patterns at Damaged Buildings

Existingﬁreﬁghting robots are focused on simple storage orﬁre sup-pression outside buildings rather than detection or recognition.Utilizing a large number of robots using expensive equipment is challenging.This study aims to increase the efﬁciency of search and rescue operations and the safety ofﬁreﬁgh-ters by detecting and identifying the disaster site by recognizing collapsed areas,obstacles,and rescuers on-site.A fusion algorithm combining a camera and three-dimension light detection and ranging(3D LiDAR)is proposed to detect and loca-lize the interiors of disaster sites.The algorithm detects obstacles by analyzingﬂoor segmentation and edge patterns using a mask regional convolutional neural network(mask R-CNN)features model based on the visual data collected from a parallelly connected camera and 3D LiDAR.People as objects are detected using you only look once version 4(YOLOv4)in the image data to localize persons requiring rescue.The point cloud data based on 3D LiDAR cluster the objects using the density-based spatial clustering of applications with noise(DBSCAN)clustering algorithm and estimate the distance to the actual object using the center point of the clustering result.The proposed artiﬁcial intelligence(AI)algorithm was veriﬁed based on individual sensors using a sensor-mounted robot in an actual building to detectﬂoor surfaces,atypical obstacles,and persons requiring rescue.Accordingly,the fused AI algorithm was comparatively veriﬁed.

Background The TetraFlex accommodating intraocular lens （IOL） was designed to supply the patients both satisfied far and near vision after cataract surgery.So we need to evaluate the safety, distance and near visual acuity, subjective accommodation and IOL mobility with the TetraFlex accommodating IOL implantation.Methods Fifty eyes of 42 study-eligible cataract patients, who gave informed consent at a single eye clinic in China over a 10-month period, underwent phacoemulsification with TetraFlex IOL implantation.At three months postoperation,uncorrected visual acuities （UCVA）, best corrected visual acuities （BCVA）, distance-corrected near visual acuities （DCNVA）, subjective accommodation using the defocus method, and pilocarpine-induced IOL mobility were measured.Results No postoperative complications were noted in the study.Three months postoperation UCVA and BCVA were 20/40 or bettter in 82% （41/50） and 92% （46/50） of eyes, respectively; 66% （33/50） of the eyes had DCNVA of Jager （J） 4or better at 3 months.In addition, the mean subjective accommodation was （0.94±0.61） diopters （D）（range from 0.50 to 1.50 D） and pilocarpine-induced IOL mobility was （337±124） μm （range from 121 to 501 μm） with the TetraFlex.High relationship （r2=0.901, P 〈0.01） was found between these two measurements.Conclusion Implantation of the TetraFlex is safe and leads to excellent uncorrected distance vision and good uncorrected near vision.

Autonomous relative navigation is the key technology in mining or rescuing. On the basis of mine requirement and the theories of machine vision, an autonomous relative navigation algorithm for mine agent based on quaternion was proposed. In rotation transformation, this algorithm was represented by using quaternion. Because the Jacobi matrix of this method is lower than that of Hall algorithm, the calculation efficiency is improved by using this algorithm. The results of these experiments show that the computation burden of this algorithm based on quaternion is about half that of Hall algorithm. This algorithm based on quaternion is improved as a valid way to solve the problem of mine real-time navigation.

Seeing red: color vision in the largemouth bass

How animals visually perceive the environment is key to understanding important ecological behaviors, such as predation, foraging, and mating. This study focuses on the visual system properties and visual perception of color in the largemouth bass Micropterus salmoides. This study (1) documents the number and spectral sensitivity of photoreceptors,(2) uses these parameters to model visual perception, and (3) tests the model of color perception using a behavioral assay. Bass possess single cone cells maximally sensitive at 535 nm, twin cone cells maximally sensitive at 614 nm, and rod cells maximally sensitive at 528 nm. A simple model of visual perception predicted that bass should not be able to discern between chartreuse yellow and white nor between green and blue. In contrast, bass should be able to discern red from all achromatic (i.e., gray scale) stimuli. These predictions were partially upheld in behavioral trials. In behavioral trials, bass were first trained to recognize a target color to receive a food reward, and then tested on their ability to differentiate between their target color and a color similar in brightness. Bass trained to red and green could easily discern their training color from all other colors for target colors that were similar in brightness (white and black, respectively). This study shows that bass possess dichromatic vision and do use chromatic (i.e., color) cues in making visual-based decisions.

A Fractal Dimension Based Framework for Night vision Fusion

In this paper, a novel fusion framework is proposed for night-vision applications such as pedestrian recognition,vehicle navigation and surveillance. The underlying concept is to combine low-light visible and infrared imagery into a single output to enhance visual perception. The proposed framework is computationally simple since it is only realized in the spatial domain. The core idea is to obtain an initial fused image by averaging all the source images. The initial fused image is then enhanced by selecting the most salient features guided from the root mean square error(RMSE) and fractal dimension of the visual and infrared images to obtain the final fused image.Extensive experiments on different scene imaginary demonstrate that it is consistently superior to the conventional image fusion methods in terms of visual and quantitative evaluations.

Reversibility of visual field defects through induction of brain plasticity: vision restoration, recovery and rehabilitation using alternating current stimulation

For decades visual field defects were considered irreversible because it was thought that in the visual system the regeneration potential of the neuronal tissues is low.Nevertheless,there is always some potential for partial recovery of the visual field defect that can be achieved through induction of neuroplasticity.Neuroplasticity refers to the ability of the brain to change its own functional architecture by modulating synaptic efficacy.It is maintained throughout life and just as neurological rehabilitation can improve motor coordination,visual field defects in glaucoma,diabetic retinopathy or optic neuropathy can be improved by inducing neuroplasticity.In ophthalmology many new treatment paradigms have been tested that can induce neuroplastic changes,including non-invasive alternating current stimulation.Treatment with alternating current stimulation(e.g.,30 minutes,daily for 10 days using transorbital electrodes and^10 Hz)activates the entire retina and parts of the brain.Electroencephalography and functional magnetic resonance imaging studies revealed local activation of the visual cortex,global reorganization of functional brain networks,and enhanced blood flow,which together activate neurons and their networks.The future of low vision is optimistic because vision loss is indeed,partially reversible.
