violence toward emergency physicians: A prospective-descriptive study

BACKGROUND: The highest rate of workplace violence occurs in the health sector, although most cases remain unreported. Emergency services face the majority of these incidents for many reasons, such as the patient profile, long waiting time, and overcrowding. We aimed to determine the characteristics and causes of violence toward emergency physicians. METHODS: The acts of violence toward emergency physicians over a one-year period were prospectively recorded. After a violent incident took place, a third party separately interviewed the physician exposed to the violent behavior and the perpetrator who displayed this behavior. We examined the perpetrator's reasons for violence, their demographic characteristics, and the medical complaints of patients involved in such events to determine the characteristics and causes of ***: Of the violent acts investigated, 85.1% were verbal, and most were directed toward male doctors by the young male relatives of the patients. More than half of the violent acts occurred within the 15 minutes of presentation to emergency service(60.5%) and at off-hours(69.4%). Concerning the health insurance, 20.4% of the cases were covered by the free green card system, and a small number of the perpetrators of violence lived in rural areas(38.2%). The most common reason for violent behavior was the patients' or their relatives' dissatisfaction with the examination or treatment method(38.2%).CONCLUSIONS: Appropriate communication should be established with the patients, and they should be adequately informed about the treatments and interventions to be performed in order to prevent possible acts of violence.

Background:Adolescent violence is now regarded as a major public health *** growing interest in psychographic risk factors for violent behavior,few studies have explored the role of strategies to regulate cognitive emotion in *** study aimed to investigate the prevalence of adolescent violence behaviors and to identify the relationship between specific strategies to regulate cognitive emotion and forms of violent ***:We cross-sectionally surveyed 3315 students in grades 7 to 10 using anonymous,self-reporting questionnaires to examine strategies to regulate cognitive emotion and violence-related behaviors in young adolescents.A logistic regression model was used to identify the relationship between specific violent behaviors and strategies to regulate cognitive ***:The most commonly reported type of violent behavior was verbal attack(48.6%),while 7.1%of students were involved in fi ghts and 2.4%had been injured in *** were involved in all forms of violent behavior studied,and did so significantly more often than girls(Pviolence-related behaviors,especially verbal attacks,were common among *** cognitive emotion regulation strategies were positively associated with specific violent behaviors,but catastrophisizing was strongly related to all forms of violent ***,programs targeting adolescent violence must address this and other maladaptive cognitive emotion regulation strategies.

A Skeleton-based Approach for Campus violence Detection

In this paper,we propose a skeleton-based method to identify violence and aggressive *** approach does not necessitate highprocessing equipment and it can be quickly *** approach consists of two phases:feature extraction from image sequences to assess a human posture,followed by activity classification applying a neural network to identify whether the frames include aggressive situations and violence.A video violence dataset of 400 min comprising a single person’s activities and 20 h of video data including physical violence and aggressive acts,and 13 classifications for distinguishing aggressor and victim behavior were ***,the proposed method was trained and tested using the collected *** results indicate the accuracy of 97%was achieved in identifying aggressive conduct in video ***,the obtained results show that the proposed method can detect aggressive behavior and violence in a short period of time and is accessible for real-world applications.

Frequency and barriers of reporting workplace violence in nurses:An online survey in China

Objectives:This study aimed to explore the reporting of workplace violence against nurses and the reasons why they did not ***:A self-designed questionnaire regarding workplace violence and reporting was used to conduct a cross-sectional survey on nurses who submitted a manuscript to a Chinese nursing journal from 2016 to 2017.A total of 324 nurses agreed to participate in this study and 266 participants from 165 hospitals in 72 cities returned ***:A total of 172 nurses(64.7%)experienced violent incidents during the past *** these incidents,45.5%were reported;and the reporting rate of physical assaults(69.0%)was higher than those of verbal abuse(36.9%),threatening behavior(51.7%),and sexual harassment(60.0%).Formal reporting accounted for 25.4%(15.4%in written form and 10.0%through a computer-assisted reporting system).Almost half of the nurses(49.6%)stated that the hospital had no reporting system or they were uncertain about the reporting *** reasons of not reporting,51.9%of the nurses were unware of how and what types of violence to report,and 50.6%of the nurses believed that the hospital paid greater attention to patients rather than ***:A clear definition of workplace violence and reporting procedures,establishment of a facile system for reporting,and supervisory support following a reporting are urgently required.

Ethnic and Religious violence in South China： The Hakka-Tiandihui Uprising of 1802

In 1802 the second major Tiandihui （Heaven and Earth Society） uprising erupted in the mountains of Huizhou prefecture near Canton. Before it was suppressed over a year later, the disturbances came to involve several tens of thousands of people and nearly a quarter of Guangdong province. This study, which is based on extant historical sources and fieldwork, takes an interdisciplinary approach, combining the methodologies of history, anthropology, and folklore. The areas where the uprising occurred were predominantly Hakka, an ethnic Chinese minority who came into conflict with the earlier settlers, known as the Punti. As violence escalated, both sides organized their own paramilitary units： Hakka formed Tiandihui groups and Punti formed Ox Head Societies. Significantly too, the Tiandihui groups in Huizhou belonged to a much wider network of secret society and sectarian organizations that spread across the Hakka heartland on the Jiangxi, Fujian, and Guangdong border. This article addresses key issues concerning the social, political, and religious contexts and motivations of this Hakka-led uprising.

The relationship between intimate partner violence and HIV:A model-based evaluation

Background:Many studies have shown that women who have experienced intimate partner violence(IPV)are at a greater risk of HIV,but the factors accounting for this association are unclear,and trials of interventions to reduce IPV have not consistently reduced HIV ***:This study uses an agent-based model,calibrated to South African data sources,to evaluate hypotheses about likely causal pathways linking IPV,HIV,and other confounding *** about associations between IPV and HIV risk behaviours were based on reviews of international ***:There is an association between past IPV experience and HIV incidence even when no causal effects are assumed(IRR 1.28,95%CI 1.23e1.34),because women with a propensity for multiple partners are more likely to have ever been in a relationship with a violent ***,in addition,men with a propensity for concurrent relationships are more likely to perpetrate IPV,the IRR increases to 1.42(95%CI 1.36e1.48),consistent with empirical IRR *** scenarios in which experience of IPV is assumed to cause changes in women's sexual behaviour have little effect on the *** intervention that reduces IPV by 50%could be expected to reduce HIV incidence by at most 1.3%.Interpretation:Much of the observed association between IPV and HIV is likely to be due to confounding behavioural *** interventions to reduce IPV are important,these interventions alone are unlikely to have a substantial impact on HIV incidence.

Poverty and violence in Joyce Carol Oates's Fiction

Joyce Carol Oates, one of America's most prestigious and prolific contemporary writers, favors depicting the dark side of America, especially poverty and violence. This paper studies Oates' s depiction of abject poverty, of those most powerless and vulnerable and those who cannot attain the food, water, and shelter necessary for survival during the Great Depression. Then, relative poverty after the Depression is also discussed. Oates keenly observes "the invisible poor" in the affluent American society and gives voice to those relatively deprived and marginal. By analyzing the relationship between poverty and violence, this paper concludes that Oates tries to awaken readers to the social malaise and the real life of the downtrodden and at the same time calls for passion and life's energy. The obsession with the darkest sides of the society is not a sick fondness but reflects the social conscience of Oates as a serious writer.

Experiencing various forms of violence in either childhood or adulthood has been associated with cardiovascular disease,both shortly after the event and during follow-up,particularly in *** coronavirus disease 2019 pandemic has heightened the risk of domestic violence with serious sequelae for mental and cardiovascular health in women,possibly due to several contributing factors,ranging from lockdown,stay at home regulations,job losses,anxiety,and ***,it remains paramount to enforce proactive preventive strategies,at both the family and individual level,maintain a high level of attention to recognize all forms of violence or abuse,and guarantee a multidisciplinary team approach for victims of interpersonal or domestic violence in order to address physical,sexual,and emotional domains and offer a personalized care.

Experiences with a violence and mental health safety protocol for a randomized controlled trial to support youth living with HIV

Background:Safety protocols are an essential component of studies addressing violence and mental health but are rarely described in the published literature from Sub-Saharan *** designed and implemented a safety protocol within Project YES!(Youth Engaging for Success),which enrolled 276 youth living with HIV(ages 15–24 years)in a randomized controlled trial of a peer-mentoring intervention across four HIV clinics in Ndola,***:Youth who reported severe violence and/or suicidal thoughts on research surveys or during meetings with youth peer mentors(YPM)were referred to designated healthcare providers(HCP).We explored experiences with the safety protocol using:a)monitoring data of referrals,and b)in-depth interviews with youth(n=82),HCP(n=10),YPM(n=8),and staff(n=6).Descriptive statistics were generated and thematic analysis of coded transcripts and written memos ***:Nearly half of youth enrolled(48%of females,41%of males)were referred to a HCP at least *** first referral was most often for sexual violence(35%)and/or suicidal ideation/depression(29%).All referred youth aged 15–17 years and over 80%of referred youth aged 18+agreed to see a *** referred 15%for additional services outside the ***-nine youth,all HCP,all YPM,and all staff interviewed discussed the safety *** youth felt“encouraged,”“helped,”“unburdened,”and“relieved”by their meetings with HCP;some expressed concerns about meeting with *** safety protocol helped HCP recognize the need to integrate care for violence and mental health with medication adherence ***,YPM,and study staff raised implementation challenges,including youth choosing not to open up to HCP,time and resource constraints,deficiencies in HCP training,and stigma and cultural norms inhibiting referrals outside the clinic for emotional trauma and mental ***:Implementing a safety protocol within an HIV clinic-based research study is possible and beneficial for
