Changes and development plans in the mountain villages of South Korea:Comparison of the first and second national surveys

Owing to the geographic disadvantages of mountain villages, the social, cultural, and economic conditions of mountain villagers are inferior to those of urban dwellers in South Korea. Thus, in 1995, the The government of South Korea launched a mountain village development support program to promote agriculture and forestry, balance national land development, and preserve cultural heritage. The program was effectively implemented, improving the income, population size, and living conditions of villagers in addition to setting up a system for stable project implementation. However, concerns were raised about long-term development planning, the creation and marketing of specialty brands, facility management/operation, and follow-up support. The government conducted surveys of mountain villagers in 2003 and 2014, obtaining basic data to address these issues. This study evaluates the outcomes of these two surveys, suggesting areas requiring focusedaction, concentrating on village development projects, forest resource distribution and use, demographic trends, the economy, exchange with urban areas, green tourism, and master planning. We find that despite growth in the forest labor force, forest ownership is diminishing in terms of the number and scale of holdings. Consequently, it is necessary to commercialize forest resources, establish favorable settlement conditions, and expand government support for village-run projects. In addition, systematic forest management for older tree age classes would benefit the public and provide assets for future mountain village development. Our results are expected to provide baseline information for the establishment and efficient implementation of mountain village development policy.

Categories and characteristics of urban villages by GIS-based analysis:A case study of the Shenzhen Special Economic Zone

Studies on the characteristics of urban villages have attracted much interest in urban ***,how to advance the development of further theoretical analysis and quantitative methodologies,especially in the era that GIS and digital-urban technologies develop rapidly and provide precious resources on spatial issues,has always been a heated debate and *** this paper,a mathematical model based on spatial analysis is introduced to deal with the categorization and characterization of urban villages.A total of 89 urban villages in the Shenzhen Special Economic Zone(SEZ)are used in this case *** ArcGIS tools on buffer analysis,distance and density calculation,and socio-economic and spatial attributes conjunction,urban villages’31 spatial variables in 4 aspects—social,economic,locational,and physical—are extracted,and 6 principal factors are concluded by principal components analysis to indicate the spatial characteristic of urban *** on the 6 principal factors,6 types of urban villages,including rapidly sprawling,large,rapidly industrializing periphery,overcrowded,intensively mobile and economically backward,are divided through the Hierarchical Clustering ***,the spatial features and formation mechanisms of each type of urban villages are ***,the advantages and the shortcomings of the methodology for this specific application are also ***,several guidelines on urban village management and renewal are provided based on the result of type *** outcome of the paper depends on the informational and technological support from the development of digital-city management,and is able to in turn provide basis on monitoring and improving urban villages which can further digital urban framework.

While public spaces of tourist villages(PSTVs)have increasingly gained more policy and development attention,their empirical investigations are still *** study aims to develop a quantitative methodological approach of assessing PSTVs through the use of Analytic Hierarchy Process(AHP)to measure tourists’*** approach involves experts’and tourists’judgment processes,and the resultant assessment matrix is applied to suggest the strengths and weaknesses of the PSTVs using an Importance-Performance Analysis(IPA).The results from Jiaochangwei Village in Shenzhen suggest that"street spaces,""square spaces,""coastal spaces,""green spaces,""traffic facilities,""public service facilities,""culture,"and"management and maintenance"are key factors to evaluate the use and quality of *** paper offers insights into the theoretical investigation and practical development of PSTVs for tourism and village planning decision makers.

Addressing Climate Change Vulnerability in Alaska Native villages Through Indigenous Community Knowledge

From a Western standpoint, Alaska Native villages (ANVs) and other indigenous groups have a particular vulnerability to climate change. At the same time, these groups may be seen by themselves and Westerners as having particular knowledge that can help them adapt to climate change. This paper explores how ANVs are vulnerable to climate change and considers factors such as colonization that aggravate this vulnerability. It then explores how indigenous community knowledge may reduce vulnerability and facilitate adaptation and resilience. It concludes that indigenous community knowledge alone is insufficient to support adaptation and resilience, given the degree of social, political, and climate change, so long as Western institutions privilege Western science over other forms of knowledge. That said, indigenous community knowledge should inform agency decision-making and development projects and may serve as cultural capital that can support resilience. The desire to use indigenous knowledge may be a proxy for a larger issue—the need to include indigenous communities in decision-making about climate change.

There are hundreds of villages in the western mountainous area of Beijing,of which quite a few have a profound history and form the settlement culture in the western part of *** dozens of ancient villages in Mentougou District as the research sample,the village space as the research object,based on ASTER GDEM database and quantitative analysis tools such as Global Mapper and ArcGIS,this study analyzed from the perspectives of altitude,topography,slope direction,and building density distribution,made a quantitative study on the spatial distribution and plane structure of ancient villages so that the law of village space with the characteristics of western Beijing was summarized to supplement and improve the relevant achievements in the research field of ancient villages in western Beijing.

Factors Affecting the Households’ Willingness-to-Pay for Wastewater Treatment in Agro-Food Processing Craft villages, Nhue-Day River Basin, Vietnam

Industrialization is a major strategy of Vietnam for the development of the countryside. One such program is the promotion of craft villages that have been successful in increasing income levels that are 5 times more than those villages mainly engaged in agricultural production. However, while such programs have brought prosperity to these villages, they have ignored the adverse effects on the environment brought about by the wastewaters from the processing plants. Would these households involved in agro-food processing be willing to pay for the establishment of a wastewater plant to address the environmental problems? What factors would influence their willingness to pay? The results of the study among the selected households in Nhue-Day River Basin, Vietnam involved in agro-processing showed that the major factors affecting their willingness to pay for the establishment of a wastewater treatment plant are their level of education, quantity of households’ untreated wastewater, presence of young children who are more vulnerable to the adverse effects of pollution, experience of family members getting sick, households’ awareness of benefits from treated wastewater, capacity to pay, access to credit and membership in craft village’s Association. The study recommended that decisions on addressing environmental issues should be participatory to be able to take into consideration the socio-economic conditions of the stakeholders.

Spatial Distribution of Traditional Chinese villages and Factors Affecting Their Distribution

Traditional Chinese villages are precious historical and cultural heritage and special tourist attractions. This study took 646 traditional villages that announced by the government in 2012 as an example to analyze the spatial structure of the traditional villages in China by means of GIS spatial analysis tools and quantitative analysis methods, namely the nearest distance index, geographic concentration index, Gini coefficient and Lorenz curve. The results showed that:(1) in terms of the spatial distribution density, the average density of traditional villages in 29 provinces(cities, districts) was 0.70/10,000 km^2, showing a large provincial gap;(2) as for the type of spatial distribution, there was a cluster distribution; and(3) on the balance of spatial distribution, there were many differences between the east and west, and the distribution was extremely uneven. Based on the above, this study explored the reasons for the uneven spatial distribution, including the natural environment, population migration, the level of traffic accessibility, the degree of government attention, and the level of economic development.
