The Effect of Ocular Dominance on Accommodation and Miosis under Binocular Open viewing Conditions

Background/Aims: We investigated the relationship between ocular dominance and accommodation on the pupils of the dominant eye and the non-dominant eye under binocular open viewing conditions. Methods: Seventeen healthy young volunteers participated in this study. The dominant eye was determined using the hole-in-the-card test. The objective refraction and pupil diameter were measured under binocular open viewing and monocular single viewing conditions using a binocular open auto-refractor, the WAM-5500 (SHIGIYA MACHINERY WORKS LTD., Hiroshima, Japan). The accommodative response was calculated using the objective refraction, and the rate of miosis was calculated using the pupil diameter. These values were then compared between the dominant and the non-dominant eyes. Results: Under binocular open viewing conditions, the accommodative response in the dominant eye was greater than in the non-dominant eye (p = 0.001). In contrast, under monocular single viewing conditions, there were no differences in the accommodative response between the dominant and non-dominant eyes. In both binocular open viewing and monocular single viewing conditions, there were no differences in the miosis ratio between the dominant and non-dominant eyes. Conclusion: These results suggest that the accommodative response under binocular open viewing conditions is influenced by ocular dominance.

Based on the matrix formula of thermal infrared radiant system, the components temperature can be retrieved by the inversive matrix. Around the stability problem of retrieved result, the research work we did was focused on (i) the correlation of (wk,j) which is the key to affect the retrieval accuracy, (ii) a general method which can help us find the number of retriev-able parameters and evaluate the retrieval error before its performance, (iii) the choice of 搊pti-mal viewing angle group?based on the formula of absolute error propagation. The row winter wheat field was chosen as an example. The results can provide a theoretical basis for multi-angle thermal infrared remote sensing and components temperature retrieval.

Both leaf inclination angle distribution(LAD)and leaf area index(LAI)dominate optical remote sensing signals.The G-function,which is a function of LAD and remote sensing geometry,is often set to 0.5 in the LAI retrieval of coniferous canopies even though this assumption is only valid for spherical LAD.Large uncertainties are thus introduced.However,because numerous tiny leaves grow on conifers,it is nearly impossible to quantitatively evaluate such uncertainties in LAI retrieval.In this study,we proposed a method to characterize the possible change of G-function of coniferous canopies as well as its effect on LAI retrieval.Specifically,a Multi-Directional Imager(MDI)was developed to capture stereo images of the branches,and the needles were reconstructed.The accuracy of the inclination angles calculated from the reconstructed needles was high.Moreover,we analyzed whether a spherical distribution is a valid assumption for coniferous canopies by calculating the possible range of the G-function from the measured LADs of branches of Larch and Spruce and the true G-functions of other species from some existing inventory data and threedimensional(3D)tree models.Results show that the constant G assumption introduces large errors in LAI retrieval,which could be as large as 53%in the zenithal viewing direction used by spaceborne LiDAR.As a result,accurate LAD estimation is recommended.In the absence of such data,our results show that a viewing zenith angle between 45 and 65 degrees is a good choice,at which the errors of LAI retrieval caused by the spherical assumption will be less than 10%for coniferous canopies.

A new species of ciliates Hemophrys polymicronuclei sp. nov. from Donghu Lake is described. It is characterized by its colorless to yellowish, soft, flat and spindle-shaped body with four micronuclei.The right side of the body is a little more convex than the left side, and more transparent at both anterior and posterior ends. Its slit-like cytostome accounts for 1/4 of the body length on the left side without any trichocyst. There are two rows of trichites near the right anterior end ,6 - 8 straight bristles on the pellicle opposite the cytostome, 23-25 rows of kinetides on the right side of the body, two ellipsoid macronuclei and many contractile vacuoles in the cytoplasm.

Visual Literacy in Secondary EFL Education in China:A Semiotic Perspective

Human societies use a variety of semiotic modes for meaning construction.The ubiquity of images in today’s world,alone or in combination with other modes,makes competence with images or visual literacy a prerequisite of competence in life.Now identified as an essential literacy skill for 21st century learners in the digital age,visual literacy has been introduced into contemporary English curricula in a number of countries around the world.In China,the skill of viewing is added as one important component of language competence in National English Curriculum Standards for High School issued in 2017,thereby making the cultivation of visual literacy vital to secondary EFL education.This paper aims to present and discuss the current situation of visual literacy in secondary EFL education in China.It first provides an analysis of the ways of visual-verbal interplay for meaning construction in textbooks,and finds an uneven distribution of image-text relations in the current EFL textbooks,with a majority of images playing a supportive or illustrative role.Then it explicates the bi-dimensional three-level construct of visual literacy that is specified in the EFL curriculum,with which the subskills of visual literacy assessed in the latest large-scale EFL tests are compared,with a view to finding out the degree of correspondence between the subskills measured in the tests and the subskills expected in the curriculum.The result shows that only one dimension of reading visual texts is assessed,and the other dimension of writing visual texts is not evidenced.Finally suggestions are made for varied visual inputs,an expanded construct of visual literacy,and improvement of the washback effect of tests.
