Plant above-ground biomass and litter quality drive soil microbial metabolic limitations during Vegetation restoration of subtropical forests

Changes in litter quality(carbon:nitrogen,C:N)and above-ground biomass(AGB)following Vegetation restoration significantly impact soil physicochemical properties,yet their effects on soil microbial metabolic limitations remain unclear.We measured litter quality,AGB,soil physicochemical properties,and extracellular enzyme activity(EEA)along a Vegetation restoration gradient(7,14,49,70 years,and nearly climax evergreen broadleaved forests)in southern China.We also evaluated soil microbial metabolic limitations by a vector analysis of the EEA.Results revealed the soil microbial metabolisms were co-limited by C and phosphorus(P).The microbial C limitation initially decreased(before 14 years)and then increased,while the microbial P limitation initially increased(before 49 years)and then decreased.Partial least squares path modeling(PLS-PM)showed that the microbial C limitation was mainly attributed to microbial C use efficiency induced by litter quality,suggesting that microorganisms may transfer cellular energy between microbial growth and Cacquiring enzyme production.The microbial P limitation was primarily correlated with AGB-driven change in soil elements and their stoichiometry,highlighting the importance of nutrient stoichiometry and balance in microbial metabolism.The shifts between microbial C and P limitations and the strong connections of plant–soil-microbe processes during Vegetation restoration revealed here will provide us with helpful information for optimal management to achieve forest restoration success.

Feedbacks between Vegetation restoration and local precipitation over the Loess Plateau in China

The implementation of large-scale Vegetation restoration over the Chinese Loess Plateau has achieved clear improvements in vegetation fraction,as evidenced by large areas of slopes and plains being restored to grassland or forest.However,such large-scale Vegetation restoration has altered land-atmosphere exchanges of water and energy,as the land surface characteristics have changed.These variations could affect regional climate,especially local precipitation.Quantitatively evaluating this feedback is an important scientific question in hydrometeorology.This study constructs a coupled land-atmosphere model incorporating vegetation dynamics,and analyzes the spatio-temporal changes of different land use types and land surface parameters over the Loess Plateau.By considering the impacts of Vegetation restoration on the water-energy cycle and on land-atmosphere interactions,we quantified the feedback effect of Vegetation restoration on local precipitation across the Loess Plateau,and discussed the important underlying processes.To achieve a quantitative evaluation,we designed two simulation experiments,comprising a real scenario with Vegetation restoration and a hypothetical scenario without Vegetation restoration.These enabled a comparison and analysis of the net impact of Vegetation restoration on local precipitation.The results show that Vegetation restoration had a positive effect on local precipitation over the Loess Plateau.Observations show that precipitation on the Loess Plateau increased significantly,at a rate of 7.84 mm yr^(-2),from 2000 to 2015.The simulations show that the contribution of large-scale Vegetation restoration to the precipitation increase was about 37.4%,while external atmospheric circulation changes beyond the Loess Plateau contributed the other 62.6%.The average annual precipitation under the Vegetation restoration scenario over the Loess Plateau was 12.4%higher than that under the scenario without Vegetation restoration.The above research results have important theoretical and practical s

Changes of soil quality induced by different Vegetation restoration in the collapsing gully erosion areas of southern China

Understanding the influence of collapsing gully management restoration on soil quality and function is essential to the protection of the regional ecological environment in the collapsing gully erosion area.The primary objective of this study was to construct soil quality index(SQI)to assess the influence of different Vegetation restoration types on soil quality in collapsing gully restoration.The influence of five Vegetation restoration types on soil properties was investigated by using a path analysis,a comprehensive soil quality index(SQI),and a general linear model(GLM).Vegetation restoration was shown to significantly increase the saturated hydraulic conductivity(Ks),mainly due to the effect of the physical parameters of bulk density,soil cohesion,and soil water content.Meanwhile,pH,Ks,soil organic matter(OM),and sand content were revealed as reasonable indicators to evaluate the influence of Vegetation restoration on soil quality.Moreover,Vegetation restoration was found to significantly improve the soil quality,with the highest SQI value for natural restoration mixed forest(NF),followed by replanted arboreal forest(RA)and replanted scrubland(RS),which were all significantly higher than the SQI value of the erosion area(EA)in the collapsing gully.Additionally,vegetation type explained the most substantial proportion of total variability(46.41%),and restoration time showed a positive correlation with SQI.The results of this study can provide a reference for the restoration and protection of the regional ecological environment in the collapsing gully area.

The challenge of soil loss control and Vegetation restoration in the karst area of southwestern China

Soil loss, both from surface soil loss and subsurface soil leakage, in the karst regions of southwestern China is a serious environmental problem that threatens sustainability in that region. The surface soil loss has been extensively studied, and many studies have been conducted to investigate the causes, impacts and mechanisms involved, but the study of subsurface soil leakage has received little attention due to the difficulties in studying the natural conditions. There is no consensus on the overall proportions between surface soil loss and subsurface soil leakage. To control soil loss, improve ecological restoration, and help locals out of poverty, the Chinese government carried out a series of ecological restoration projects in the karst regions of southwestern China starting in the 1980s. As a result, the intensity and areal extent of soil loss continues to decrease and the ecological situation is steadily improving. However, because of the fragile ecosystem in the karst regions, the soil loss control is a long-term task, and the soil loss in some karst regions continues to be a problem. Subsequently, we put forward some suggestions for the policy makers relative to conservation of soil loss and Vegetation restoration. These suggestions include:(1) government, private organizations and individuals are encouraged to raise funds for soil loss control and Vegetation restoration;(2) nature reserves should be established to increase biodiversity;(3) engineering projects such as small reservoirs, ponds, and flow diversion channels should be constructed in marginal karst regions.

Vegetation restoration in Response to Climatic and Anthropogenic Changes in the Loess Plateau, China

A thorough understanding of the vegetation succession in relation to both climatic changes and anthropogenic activities is vital for the formulation of adaptation strategies that address potential ecosystem challenges.Various climatic factors such as temperature,precipitation,and solar radiation,as well as anthropogenic factors such as ecological engineering and population migration,will affect the conditions for vegetation.However,the relationships among various factors remain unclear and the response of vegetation to climate change and anthropogenic activities in the Loess Plateau of China has not been well established.This study investigated the spatio-temporal characteristics and relationships between vegetation coverage and climatic factors in the Loess Plateau for the period of 1985–2015.Further analysis separated the anthropogenic and climatic factors on vegetation succession based on residual analysis.The results showed that the normalized difference vegetation index(NDVI)followed a significant upward trend with annual change rates of 0.15%during 1985–2015.The trend of human-induced NDVI increase was consistent with the spatial distribution of increasing forest areas in the eastern part of the Loess Plateau.Eco-restoration projects were the main driving factors that promoted vegetation coverage on the Loess Plateau.Furthermore,these results demonstrated that migrants to cities in the Loess Plateau could relieve ecological pressures and promote Vegetation restoration.Therefore,the government should strive to increase population mobility and restore vegetation to sustain this particularly fragile ecological environment.

Soil hydraulic conductivity as affected by Vegetation restoration age on the Loess Plateau,China

The Loess Plateau of China has experienced extensive Vegetation restoration in the past several decades, which leads to great changes in soil properties such as soil bulk, porosity, and organic matter with the Vegetation restoration age. And these soil properties have great effect on the soil infiltration and soil hydraulic conductivity. However, the potential changes in soil hydraulic conductivity caused by Vegetation restoration age have not been well understood. This study was conducted to investigate the changes in soil hydraulic conductivity under five grasslands with different Vegetation restoration ages （3, 10, 18, 28 and 37 years） compared to a slope farmland, and further to identify the factors responsible for these changes on the Loess Plateau of China. At each site, accumulative infiltration amount and soil hydraulic conductivity were determined using a disc permeameter with a water supply pressure of -20 mm. Soil properties were measured for analyzing their potential factors influencing soil hydraulic conductivity. The results showed that the soil bulk had no significant changes over the initial 20 years of restoration （P〉0.05）; the total porosity, capillary porosity and field capacity decreased significantly in the grass land with 28 and 37 restoration ages compared to the slope farmland; accumulative infiltration amount and soil hydraulic conductivity were significantly enhanced after 18 years of Vegetation restoration. However, accumulative infiltration amount and soil hydraulic conductivity fluctuated over the initial 10 years of restoration. The increase in soil hydraulic conductivity with Vegetation restoration was closely related to the changes in soil texture and structure. Soil sand and clay contents were the most influential factors on soil hydraulic conductivity, followed by bulk density, soil porosity, root density and crust thickness. Changes in the soil microbial communities of different soil aggregations after Vegetation restoration in a semiarid grassland,China

Soil aggregate fractions can regulate microbial community composition and structure after Vegetation restoration.However,there has been less focus on the effects of soil aggregate fractions on the distributions of microbial communities.Here,we used phospholipid fatty acid(PLFA)analysis to explore the effects of different years of Vegetation restoration(a 35-year-old Thymus mongolicus community(Re-35yrs)and a 2-year-old nongrazing grassland(Ug-2yrs))on microbial communities within different soil aggregate sizes(5 mm).The results indicated that the amount of total PLFA in Re-35yrs was 10 times greater than that in Ug-2yrs.The soil aggregate stability increased with increasing duration of Vegetation restoration.In Re-35yrs,the total PLFA shown an increase as the soil aggregate size increased,and the highest values were observed in 3–5 mm.Ug-2yrs differed from Re-35yrs,the soil microbial diversity was higher in medium particle sizes(1–2 mm and 2–3 mm)and lower in microaggregates(5 mm).Soil microbial diversity was highest in large particle size aggregates,which resulted in low environmental stress and strong stability.The same tendency was observed in the high values of cyc/prec,S/M and soil organic matter,which indicated a lower turnover speed(F/B)of fungal energy utilization and a higher fixation rate.After years of natural restoration,the soil microbial community generally transformed from nutrient-rich to heterotrophdominant,especially in microaggregates(reflected in the G^(+)/G^(–)ratio).

With the implementation of the Grain for Green Project,vegetation cover has experienced great changes throughout the Loess Plateau(LP).These changes substantially influence the intensity of evapotranspiration(ET),thereby regulating the local microclimate.In this study,we estimated ET based on the Penman-Monteith(PM)method and Priestley-Taylor Jet Propulsion Laboratory(PT-JPL)model and quantitatively estimated the mass of water vapor and heat absorption on the LP.We analyzed the regulatory effect of Vegetation restoration on local microclimate from 2000 to 2015 and found the following:(1)Both the leaf area index(LAI)value and actual ET increased significantly across the region during the study period,and there was a significant positive correlation between them in spatial patterns and temporal trends.(2)vegetation regulated the local microclimate through ET,which increased the absolute humidity by 2.76-3.29 g m^(-3),increased the relative humidity by 15.43%-19.31%and reduced the temperature by 5.38-6.43℃per day from June to September.(3)The cooling and humidifying effects of vegetation were also affected by the temperature on the LP.(4)Correlation analysis showed that LAI was significantly correlated with temperature at the monthly scale,and the response of vegetation growth to temperature had no time-lag effect.This paper presents new insights into quantitatively assessing the regulatory effect of vegetation on the local microclimate through ET and helps to objectively evaluate the ecological effects of the Grain for Green Project on the LP.

Impact of Vegetation restoration on Soil Fungal Community Structure in Karst Rocky Desertification Areas

In this paper,managed forest(MF)and natural forest(NF)in the Huajiang Demonstration Zone of Guanling,Guizhou were selected as research objects,and cropland(CL)was taken as control.High-throughput sequencing technology was used to study the characteristics of fungal community composition and species diversity in the surface(0-10 cm)soil of each restoration measure,in order to reveal the dominant soil fungal groups and fungal community composition in karst rocky desertification areas,which was conducive to a more comprehensive understanding of the soil conditions of different Vegetation restoration measures.Research has shown that Vegetation restoration significantly affected the diversity of soil fungal community,with significant increases in Sob index,Ace index,and Chao index.The Vegetation restoration has significantly changed the composition of fungal community.The dominant fungi in the CL topsoil are Sordariomycetes(62.28%),Dothideomycetes(12.34%),and Eurotiomycetes(9.12%);the dominant fungi in the MF soil are Sordariomycetes(45.05%),Dothideomycetes(14.74%),and Mortierellomycetes(10.40%);the dominant fungi in the NF soil are unclassified fungal community(26.38%),Sordariomycetes(19.78%),and Agaricomycetes(13.82%).Vegetation restoration has changed the key fungal groups in the soil.Sordariomycetes,Fusarium,and Setophoma are the key dominant fungal groups in CL soil;Dioszegia is key dominant fungal group in MF soil;c_unclassified_k_Fungi,p_unclassified_k_Fungi,o_unclassified_k_Fungi,f_unclassified_k_Fungi,g_unclassified_k_Fungi,Teichospora,and Diaporthe are key dominant fungal groups in NF soil.

Responses of soil Collembolans to Vegetation restoration in temperate coniferous and broad-leaved mixed forests

A total of 900 soil samples were collected from five habitats,including primary coniferous broad-leaved mixed forests,secondary coniferous broad-leaved mixed forests,secondary broad-leaved forests,secondary shrub forests,and cutover lands in spring,summer,and autumn to quantify responses of soil Collembolans(springtails)to the restoration of vegetation of temperate coniferous and broad-leaved mixed forests.The results reveal that the taxonomic composition of Collembolans varied in the different stages of Vegetation restoration.Seasonal variations were in regard to their abundance and richness.High similarities existed in Collembola communities at different stages of Vegetation restoration,and distribution patterns of Collembola taxa displayed an evenness throughout all habitats.Soil Collembolans tended to gather on litter layers and soil surface;the highest abundance was found in the upper 5 cm soil layer during the initial stages of vegetation recovery.Tomocerus,Proisotoma,and Folsomia genera responded positively to the restoration of vegetation.However,responses of Ceratophysella and Parisotoma genera were negative.In addition,the Onychiuridae family did not respond to the Vegetation restoration process.It was concluded that restoration of vegetative cover can increase the abundance of soil Collembolans,but different genera respond differently.
