Accurate and dynamic visualization of Vascular diseases can contribute to restraining further deterioration from diseases in a timely manner.However,visualization is still unable to precisely determine whether and to what extent blood vessels or brain tissues are damaged.Here,we report novel benzobis(1,2,5-thiadiazole)-based second near-infrared region(NIR-II)fluorophores HY1-HY4 with highly twisted structures(55°at the S_(0) state),extremely strong aggregation-induced emission(AIE)characteristics(I/I_(0)>13),and remarkably high fluorescence quantum yields(QYs)(up to 14.45%)in the NIR-II region(>1000 nm)and∼0.27%in the nearinfrared IIb window(NIR-IIb,>1500 nm)in aqueous solution.Using NIR-IIb AIE HY4 dots,high-resolution NIR-IIb fluorescence imaging of revascularization and thrombolysis,and real-time feedback of the therapeutic efficacy of Chinese medicine Dengzhan Xixin injection(DXI)on ischemic stroke,were achieved for the first time.In addition,results showed that DXI conferred neuroprotection against cerebral ischemia injury mediated via the angiogenesis pathway.These attractive results provide a new perspective for designing ultrabright NIR-IIb probes for vascular-related phenomena,disease assessment,and precise intraoperative imageguided therapy with a deeper tissue penetration depth and higher resolution.

Biological behaviour and role of endothelial progenitor cells in Vascular diseases

Objective To review the biological behaviour of endothelial progenitor cells and their role in Vascular diseases. Data sources The data used in this review were mainly from Medline and PubMed for relevant English language articles published from 1985 to March 2007. The search term was ＂endothelial progenitor cells＂. Study selection Articles about the biological behaviour of endothelial progenitor cells and their roles in the pathogenesis of Vascular diseases such as atherogenesis were used. Results Progenitor cells in bone marrow, peripheral blood and adventitia can differentiate into mature endothelial cells （ECs）. The progenitor cells, which express certain surface markers including AC133, CD34 and KDR, enable restoration of the microcirculation and ECs when injury or ischaemia occurs. Endothelial progenitor cells used in experimental models and clinical trials for ischaemic syndromes could restore endothelial integrity and inhibit neointima development. Moreover, their number and functional properties are influenced by certain cytokines and atherosclerotic risk factors. Impairment of the progenitor cells might limit the regenerative capacity, even lead to the development of atherosclerosis or other Vascular diseases. Conclusions Endothelial progenitor cells have a particular role in prevention and treatment of certain cardioVascular diseases. However, many challenges remain in understanding differentiation of endothelial progenitor cells, their mobilization and revascularization.

Pericyte,a kind of pluripotent cell,may regulate the irigation flow and permeability of microcirculation.Pericytes are similar to the smooth muscle cells,which express several kinds of contractile proteins and have contractility.The dysfunction of pericytes is related to many microVascular diseases,including hypoxia,hypertension,diabetic retinopathy,fibrosis,inflammation,Alzheimer's disease,multiple scle-rosis,and tumor formation.For a long time,their existence and function have been neglected.The distribution,structure,biomarker,related signaling pathways as well as the roles of pericytes on Vascular diseases will be introduced in this review.

A review of radiopaque nano and polymeric materials for atherosclerosis imaging and catheterization procedures is presented in this paper. CardioVascular diseases(CVDs) are the leading cause of death in the US with atherosclerosis as a significant contributor for mortality and morbidity. In this review paper, we discussed the physics of radiopacity and X-ray/CT, clinically used contrast agents,and the recent progress in the development of radiopaque imaging agents and devices for the diagnosis and treatment of CVDs. We focused on radiopaque imaging agents for atherosclerosis, radiopaque embolic agents and drug eluting beads, and other radiopaque medical devices related to catheterization procedures to treat CVDs. Common strategies of introducing radiopacity in the polymers, together with examples of their applications in imaging and medical devices, are also presented.

Minimally invasive interventional embolization has tremendous advantages over conventional surgery in the treatment of Vascular diseases and malignant tumors.Particularly,liquid embolic agents have garnered much attention owing to their properties of deep vascular penetration and full occlusion of vasculature independent of thrombus formation,which relies on the patient’s coagulation system.Despite their drawbacks,traditional liquid embolic agents,such as lipiodol,N-butyl-2-cyanoacrylate,and Onyx,have benefited numerous patients.The original liquid embolic agents have been modified and optimized,and novel liquid embolic agents have also been developed using different strategies and mechanisms.This minireview provides a brief overview of liquid embolic agents,including approved and potential ones.Challenges,prospects,and rational design guidelines are also discussed.This review may spark interest in liquid embolic agents and open new avenues for the smart design of improved embolic agents in the development of personalized and precision medicine.

Diabetes mellitus is an independent risk factor for Vascular diseases and it is associated with increased morbidity and mortality of cardioVascular diseases.Decreased BK-β1 was associated with vascular dysfunction in diabetic condition.AKAP150 is a modulator of glucose homeostasis.In this study,we found that knockout of AKAP150 improved aortic vascular remodeling and fibrosis in mice with diabetes and in AKAP150-/-diabetic mice.Impaired Akt/GSK3β signaling contributed to decreased BK-β1 expression in diabetic mouse aortas and the silencing of AKAP150 increased Akt phosphorylation and BK-β1 expression in MOVAS cells treated with HG medium.The inhibition of Akt activity caused a consistent decrease in BK-β1 expression and increase in AKAP150 expression and treatment with AKAP150 siRNA suppressed GSK-3β expression in the nuclei of MOVAS cells treated with HG.These results suggested that knockout of AKAP150 improves impaired BK channel-mediated vascular dysfunction through the AKT/GSK3β signaling pathway in diabetes mellitus.

Radio-Anatomical Study of Anterior Variants of the Polygon of Willis

The anterior system of the polygon of Willis plays an anastomotic role between the carotid territories and communicates with the posterior system. It ensures adequate cerebral blood flow in the event of internal occlusion. Its ability to redistribute blood flow depends on its morphology, the presence and size of the vessels that constitute it and their variants, knowledge of which is essential. The morphology of the carotid system is not constant and a number of variants are well recognized with greater hemodynamic importance. In this context, we undertook this work which aims to seek the anatomical variants of the anterior part of the PW;to determine the diameters of the vessels of the latter and to correlate these results with epidemiological data. We carried out a retrospective, descriptive and analytical study over a period of 4 months at Fann University Hospital, targeting patients who had undergone brain MRI with a 3D TOF sequence whatever the indication. Patients with lesions of cerebrovascular pathologies such as ischemia, hemorrhage, aneurysm, arteriovenous malformations or presenting a limited analysis examination due to the presence of kinetic or other artifact, were not included. Demographic data and anatomical variants were studied as well as the measurements of any continuous arterial segment greater than 0.8 mm in diameter. Those less than 0.8 mm in diameter were considered hypoplastic. The C3 segment of the internal carotid arteries, the A1 segment of the anterior cerebral arteries, the anterior communicating artery, constituted our main measurement sites. The sex ratio was 1.06, the mean age of the patients was 43 years ± 17.9 with extremes of 11 and 85 years. The anterior configuration of the polygon was complete in 57.5% representing 50% of men and 65.5% of women, in 56% of subjects under 40 years old and 58% in subjects over 40 years old.
