Characterization, treatment and releases of PBDEs and PAHs in a typical municipal sewage treatment plant situated beside an urban river, East China

Characterization, treatment and releases of eight polybrominated diphenyl ethers （PBDEs） congeners and sixteen polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons （PAHs） in wastewater were evaluated along the treatment processes of a typical secondary treatment municipal sewage treatment plant （STP）（in Hefei City） situated the beside Nanfei river, East China. The findings showed that the average concentrations of the total PBDEs in raw wastewater and treated effluent were 188.578 and 36.884 ng/L respectively. Brominated diphenyl ether （BDE） 209 congener, the predominant PBDE in the STP and Nanfei river, could be related to the discharge of car-industry-derived wastes. For PAHs, the average concentrations in raw wastewater and treated effluent were 5758.8 and 2240.4 ng/L respectively, with naphthalene, benzo[a]pyrene and indeno[1,2,3-c,d]pyrene being detected at the highest concentrations. PAHs mainly originate from the combustion of biomass/coal and petroleum. The STP reduced about 80% of the PBDEs and 61% of the PAHs, which were eliminated mainly by sedimentation processes. The removal rates of PBDEs/PAHs increased with the increase of their solid-water partitioning coefficients. Accordingly, the STP＇s effluent, containing some PBDE congeners （e.g., BDE 47, 99 and 209, etc.） and low-molecular-weight PAHs, could be an important contributor of these contaminants＇ input to Nanfei river. It resulted in a significant increase of PBDE/PAH concentrations and PAH toxicological risk in the river water downstream. About 4.040 kg/yr of PBDEs and 245.324 kg/yr of PAHs could be released into the Nanfei river. The current conventional wastewater treatment processes should be improved to remove the relatively low-molecular-weight PBDEs/PAHs more effectively.

Influence of combustion-originated dioxins in atmospheric deposition on water quality of an urban river in Japan

Bulk（wet and dry） deposition samples were collected in Saitama Prefecture, Japan throughout a year（February 8, 2012 to February 7, 2013） to estimate the influence of dioxins emitting from waste incinerators on river water quality. The annual deposition flux of dioxins was 3.3 ng-toxic equivalent（TEQ）/m^2/year. Source identification using indicative congeners estimated that 82% of dioxin TEQ in the bulk deposition（2.7 ng-TEQ/m^2/year）was combustion-originated, indicating that most of the dioxins in the deposition were derived from waste incinerators. In Saitama prefecture the annual flux of combustionoriginated dioxins in depositions was apparently consistent with that of dioxin emission into the air from waste incinerators. The TEQ of combustion-originated dioxins in the deposition per rainfall was 2.4 pg-TEQ/L on annual average, exceeding the environmental quality standard（EQS） for water in Japan of 1 pg-TEQ/L. This suggests there is a possibility that dioxins in atmospheric deposition have a significant influence on the water quality of urban rivers which rainwater directly flows into because of many paved areas in the *** influence of combustion-originated dioxin in the deposition on the water quality of Ayase river, an urban river heavily polluted with dioxins, was estimated at 0.29 pg-TEQ/L on annual average in 2015. It seems that dioxins in atmospheric deposition from waste incinerators have a significant influence on water quality of some urban rivers via rainwater though the dioxins in the ambient air have achieved the EQS for atmosphere at all monitoring sites in Japan.

Malaysia's rapid economic and demographic development have placed negative pressure on its water supplies and the quality of the Juru river, which is close to the nation's capital and its major source of water. Healthy aquatic ecosystems are supported by physicochemical properties and biological diversity. This study evaluated the anthropogenic impacts on aquatic biodiversity, especially plankton, fish, and macrobenthos, as well as the water quality of the Juru river in the Penang area. Aquatic biodiversity and river water parameters were collected from ten sampling stations along the Juru river. Seven variables were used to assess the physicochemical environment: pH, temperature, total suspended solids (TSS), salinity, dissolved oxygen (DO), biochemical oxygen demand (BOD), and chemical oxygen demand. At each sampling station, the total number of plankton, fish, and macrobenthic taxa were counted and analyzed. The relationships between the physicochemical parameters and aquatic biodiversity were investigated with biotypological analysis, principal component analysis, hierarchical cluster analysis, and linear regression analysis. These analyses showed that the richness and diversity indices were generally influenced by salinity, temperature, TSS, BOD, and pH. The data obtained in this study supported the bioindicator concept. The findings, as they related to scientifically informed conservation, could serve as a model for Juru river management, as well as for river management throughout Malaysia and other tropical Asian countries.

Effects of phytoplankton community and interaction between environmental variables on nitrogen uptake and transformations in an urban river

Evaluation of urban river landscape design rationality based on AHP

An evaluation model for the rationality of the landscape design of urban rivers was established with the analytic hierarchy process （AHP） method so as to provide a foundation for updating the landscape design of urban rivers. The evaluation system was divided into four layers, including the target layer, the comprehensive layer, the element layer, and the index layer. Each layer was made of different indices. The evaluation standards for each index were also given in this paper. This evaluation model was proved tenable through its application to the landscape design rationality evaluation of the Weihe river in Xinxiang City of Henan Province. The results show that the water quality, space, activity, facility, community, width of vegetation, sense of beauty and water content are among the most influential factors and should be considered the main basis for evaluating the rationality of the landscape design of urban rivers.

urban river contamination has become a worldwide issue. In this study, we analyzed the spatial and temporal variations of microbial enzyme activities and linked it to geochemical variables of an ecological restored urban river in Tai Lake basin, China. Samples were taken from five sections of Beishi river monthly throughout a year, and microbial enzyme activities(dehydrogenase, total enzyme, phosphatase, urease,proteinase) and water geochemical variables(COD, DO, NH+4-N, NO-3-N, TN, TP, Chla, temperature and pH)were analyzed simultaneously. One-year monitoring indicated that water quality changed seasonally, and NH+4-N, TN were major pollutants. Significant positive correlation was observed between Shannon-weaver diversity index of microbial five enzyme activities(H) and comprehensive pollution index of water quality(P)(P urban *** on the canonical correspondence analysis of microbial enzyme activities and water geochemical variables, nitrogen(TN, NH+4-N and NO-3-N), temperature and DO were major factors that influencing microbial enzymatic activities. The response of microbial enzyme activities seemed to be more sensitive to water quality than microbial community structures in such ecological restored urban river.

The ecological infrastructure is a type of urban infrastructure which provide comfortable, healthy, efficient, convenient for the social production and living, and coexist harmoniously with the natural. urban ecological infrastructure is the important foundation of the city sustainable development, and also an important guarantee for the construction of the ecological city. In the rapid urbanization, ensuring structure and function integrity of the urban ecological infrastructure is particularly important, urban river environment improvement is a part of content of greenway construction in ecological infrastructure development, and has important significance to improve the city ecosystem function, catalyze urban region renewal, inherit urban history and culture, and provide recreational space. Environmental transformation of the urban river need appropriate engineering measures and ecological strategies, including water conservancy and hydrology regulation, ecological environment reconstruction, pedestrian and vehicle transportation arrangement, humanity space strategy, and ultimately ensure the safety, health and sustainable development of river ecological system.

Development of integrated catchment and water quality model for urban rivers

This paper presents the development of an urban river water quality model which considers the physical-biochemical processes within rivers and the incorporated urban catchment rainfall-runoff process developed with the time-area method. Unlike other models that simulate the hydrological and receiving water quality processes in the rural areas of the watershed scale, the model developed here is typically efficient for simulating the water quality response to nonpoint loadings from urban drainage systems, where the hydrological process is disturbed by artificially pumped discharge in wet-weather periods. This model is employed to assess the river water quality restoration in Nanfei river in Hefei City, China, where the model is calibrated against the measured data（i.e., the COD, the BOD5, the NH3-N, and the DO） in 2010, and the model parameters are suggested. It is shown that the nonpoint pollutants from the urban catchments contribute 34%-47% of the total pollutant inputs（i.e., the COD, the BOD5, and the NH3-N）, despite their low flow component of 13.4%. Apart from the improvement of the wastewater treatment plant effluent（i.e., Grade IV of the Surface Water Quality Standard）, a nonpoint loading reduction of 27.2%, 25.1%, and 35.3% of the COD, the BOD5, and the NH3-N are anticipated to meet the designated surface water quality standards of Grade V.

A New Method of Assessing Environmental Flows in Channelized urban rivers

Assessing environmental flows （e-flows） for urban rivers is important for water resources planning and river protection, Many e-flow assessment methods have been established based on species＇ habitat pro- vision requirements and pollutant dilution requirements, To avoid flood risk, however, many urban rivers have been transformed into straight, trapezoidal-profiled concrete channels, leading to the disappearance of valuable species, With the construction of water pollution-control projects, pollutant inputs into rivers have been effectively controlled in some urban rivers, For these rivers, the e-flows determined by tradi- tional methods will be very small, and will consequently lead to a low priority being given to river pro- tection in future water resources allocation and management, To more effectively assess the e-flows of channelized urban rivers, we propose three e-flow degrees, according to longitudinal hydrological con- nectivity （high, medium, and low）, in addition to the pollutant dilution water requirement determined by the mass-balance equation, In the high connectivity scenario, the intent is for the e-flows to maintain flow velocity, which can ensure the self-purification of rivers and reduce algal blooms; in the medium connectivity scenario, the intent is for the e-flows to permanently maintain the longitudinal hydrological connectivity of rivers that are isolated into several ponds by means of weirs, in order to ensure the exchange of material, energy, and information in rivers; and in the low connectivity scenario, the intent is for the e-flows to intermittently connect isolated ponds every few days （which is designed to further reduce e-flows）, The proposed methods have been used in Shiwuli river, China, to demonstrate their effectiveness, The new methods can offer more precise and realistic e-flow results and can effectively direct the construction and management of e-flow supply projects,

Background:Disentangling the relative roles of environmental filtering and spatial processes in structuring ecological communities is a central topic in metacommunity *** ecology in the temperate river ecosystems has been well developed,while less attention has been paid to subtropical urban river ***,we examined the ecological factors and seasonal difference in structuring macroinvertebrates metacommunity assembly in the subtropical urban river networks in Shenzhen,South ***:Our results revealed that there was no significant distinction of macroinvertebrate community composition among seasons,with only the relative abundance of Mollusca and Odonata significantly differed in both wet and dry *** possible explanation was that most macroinvertebrates are generally pollution-tolerant taxa characterized with nonseasonal life *** addition,distance-based redundancy analysis and variation partitioning approach revealed that metacommunity was determined equally by the environmental and dispersal-related ***,our results showed that,although a slight temporal variation of relative contribution,the identity and explanation power of ecological factors were different among ***,stronger environmental filtering structuring community dynamics was observed in the dry than wet seasons,which might be owing to higher environmental heterogeneity under a low water-flow ***,we detected that the influence of spatial processes was stronger in the wet than dry seasons,indicating an obvious dispersal processes due to high connectivity among ***:Overall,our results revealed that environmental and spatial factors equally explained variations of macroinvertebrate metacommunity,implying the necessity of considering dispersal-related processes structuring ecological communities in river bioassessment ***,degraded habitat conditions and water quality were the predominant factors
