Development of a convolutional neural network based geomechanical upscaling technique for heterogeneous geological reservoir

Geomechanical assessment using coupled reservoir-geomechanical simulation is becoming increasingly important for analyzing the potential geomechanical risks in subsurface geological developments.However,a robust and efficient geomechanical upscaling technique for heterogeneous geological reservoirs is lacking to advance the applications of three-dimensional(3D)reservoir-scale geomechanical simulation considering detailed geological heterogeneities.Here,we develop convolutional neural network(CNN)proxies that reproduce the anisotropic nonlinear geomechanical response caused by lithological heterogeneity,and compute upscaled geomechanical properties from CNN proxies.The CNN proxies are trained using a large dataset of randomly generated spatially correlated sand-shale realizations as inputs and simulation results of their macroscopic geomechanical response as outputs.The trained CNN models can provide the upscaled shear strength(R^(2)>0.949),stress-strain behavior(R^(2)>0.925),and volumetric strain changes(R^(2)>0.958)that highly agree with the numerical simulation results while saving over two orders of magnitude of computational time.This is a major advantage in computing the upscaled geomechanical properties directly from geological realizations without the need to perform local numerical simulations to obtain the geomechanical response.The proposed CNN proxybased upscaling technique has the ability to(1)bridge the gap between the fine-scale geocellular models considering geological uncertainties and computationally efficient geomechanical models used to assess the geomechanical risks of large-scale subsurface development,and(2)improve the efficiency of numerical upscaling techniques that rely on local numerical simulations,leading to significantly increased computational time for uncertainty quantification using numerous geological realizations.

Living microtissues are used in a multitude of applications as they more closely resemble native tissue physiology,as compared to 2D cultures.Microtissues are typically composed of a combination of cells and materials in varying combinations,which are dictated by the applications’design requirements.Their applications range wide,from fundamental biological research such as differentiation studies to industrial applications such as cruelty-free meat production.However,their translation to industrial and clinical settings has been hindered due to the lack of scalability of microtissue production techniques.Continuous microfluidic processes provide an opportunity to overcome this limitation as they offer higher throughput production rates as compared to traditional batch techniques,while maintaining reproducible control over microtissue composition and size.In this review,we provide a comprehensive overview of the current approaches to engineer microtissues with a focus on the advantages of,and need for,the use of continuous processes to produce microtissues in large quantities.Finally,an outlook is provided that outlines the required developments to enable large-scale microtissue fabrication using continuous processes.

upscaling in situ albedo for validation of coarse scale albedo product over heterogeneous surfaces

One of the essential steps for satellite albedo validation is upscaling in situ measurements to corresponding pixel scale over relatively heterogeneous land surfaces.Although the multi-scale validation strategy is applicable for heterogeneous surfaces,the calibration of the high-resolution imagery during upscaling process is never perfect,and thus the upscaling results suffer from errors.The regression-kriging(RK)technique can compensate the calibration part by applying kriging to upscale residuals and produce more accurate upscaling results.In this paper,in situ measurements and high spatial resolution albedo imagery combined with RK technique was proposed.This method is illustrated by upscaling surface albedo from in situ measurements scale to the coarse pixel scale in the core experimental area of HiWATER,where 17 WSN nodes were deployed at heterogeneous area.The upscaling results of this method were compared with the upscaling results from multi-scale strategy.The results show that the upscaling method based on in situ measurements and high-resolution imagery combined with RK technique can capture the spatial characteristics of surface albedo better.Further,an attempt was made to expand this method in time series.Finally,a preliminary validation of the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer albedo product was performed as the tentative application.

Mechanisms of homeostatic plasticity promote compensatory changes of cellular excitability in response to chronic changes in the network activity.This type of plasticity is essential for the maintenance of brain circuits and is involved in the regulation of neural regeneration and the progress of neurodegenerative disorders.One of the most studied homeostatic processes is synaptic scaling,where global synaptic adjustments take place to restore the neuronal firing rate to a physiological range by the modulation of synaptic receptors,neurotransmitters,and morphology.However,despite the comprehensive literature on the electrophysiological properties of homeostatic scaling,less is known about the structural adjustments that occur in the synapses and dendritic tree.In this study,we performed a meta-analysis of articles investigating the effects of chronic network excitation(synaptic downscaling)or inhibition(synaptic upscaling)on the dendritic spine density of neurons.Our results indicate that spine density is consistently reduced after protocols that induce synaptic scaling,independent of the intervention type.Then,we discuss the implication of our findings to the current knowledge on the morphological changes induced by homeostatic plasticity.

On 2D approximations for dissolution problems in Hele-Shaw cells

In this paper, we study the dissolution problems occurring in laterally large 3D systems with very small dimensions along the third coordinate, such as fractures or Hele-Shaw cells. On the basis of the scale separation assumption, we apply upscaling to the 3D pore-scale model using the volume averaging method to develop 2D averaged equations. The influence of the choice of momentum equations on the accuracy of the 2D Hele-Shaw model is discussed, and we show that the results obtained using Darcy-Brinkman equations are better than those obtained using Darcy’s law, because of the consideration of the viscous boundary layer. The validity and accuracy of the resulting 2D model are assessed based on comparisons with full 3D solutions for problems corresponding to the existence of geometrical 3D features to which a simple averaging procedure along a line(i.e., the height of the gap) perpendicular to the 2D plane cannot be applied, such as the dissolution of pillars. The results show that when Péclet and Reynolds numbers exceed certain limits, 3D effects must be considered. Moreover, natural convection effects are important when the Rayleigh number is large.

Scale up of reactors for carbon dioxide reduction

In recent times there has been a great deal of interest in the conversion of carbon dioxide into more useful chemical compounds.On the other hand,the translation of these developments in electrochemical reduction of carbon dioxide from the laboratory bench to practical scale remains an underexplored topic.Here we examine some of the major challenges,demonstrating some promising strategies towards such scale-up,including increased electrode area and stacking of electrode pairs in different configurations.We observed that increasing the electrode area from 1 to 10 cm^(2) led to only a 4%drop in current density,with similarly small penalties realised when stacking sub-cells together.

upscaling ground albedo is challenged by the serious discrepancy between the heterogeneity of land surfaces and the small number of ground-based measurements.Conventional ground-based measurements cannot provide sufficient information on the characteristics of surface albedo at the scale of coarse pixels over heterogeneous land surfaces.One method of overcoming this problem is to introduce high-resolution albedo imagery as ancillary information for upscaling.However,due to the low frequency of updating of high-resolution albedo maps,upscaling time series of ground-based albedo measurements is difficult.This paper proposes a method that is based on the idea of conceptual universal scaling methodology for establishing a spatiotemporal trend surface using very few high-resolution images and time series of ground-based measurements for spatial-temporal upscaling of albedo.The construction of the spatiotemporal trend surface incorporates the spatial information provided by auxiliary remote sensing images and the temporal information provided by long time series of ground observations.This approach was illustrated by upscaling ground-based fine-scale albedo measurements to a coarse scale over the core study area in HiWATER.The results indicate that this method can characterize the spatiotemporal variations in surface albedo well,and the overall correlation coefficient was 0.702 during the study period.

The application of fallout radionuclides in soil erosion investigations and related sediment budget studies has provided a widely used tool for improving understanding of soil erosion and sediment transfer processes.However,most studies using fallout radionuclides undertaken to date have focussed on small areas.This focus on small areas reflects both the issues addressed and practical constraints associated with sample collection and analysis.Increasing acceptance of the important role of fine sediment in degrading aquatic habitats and in the transfer and fate of nutrients and contaminants within terrestrial and fluvial systems has emphasised the need to consider larger areas and the catchment or regional scale.The need to upscale existing approaches to the use of fallout radionuclides to larger areas represents an important challenge.This contribution provides a brief review of existing and potential approaches to upscaling the use of fallout radionuclides and presents two examples where such approaches have been successfully applied.These involve a national scale assessment of soil erosion rates in England and Wales based on 137Cs measurements and an investigation of the sediment budgets of three small/intermediate-size catchments in southern Italy.

New dynamic permeability upscaling method for flow simulation under depletion drive and no-crossflow conditions

The main purpose of upscaling in reservoir simulation is to capture the dynamic behavior of fine scale models at the coarse scale. Traditional static or dynamic methods use assumptions about the boundary conditions to determine the upscaled properties, in this paper, we show that the upscaled properties are strongly dependent on the flow process observed at the fine scale. We use a simple no- crossflow depletion drive process and demonstrate that an upscaled property is not a constant value. Instead, if the goal is to match the performance of the fine scale model, the upscaled permeability changes with time. We provide an analytical solution to determine the upscaled permeability and present the value of upscaled permeability under limiting conditions. Our equation suggests that it is possible that upscaled value can fall outside the range of fine scale values under certain conditions. We show that for pseudo steady state flow, using common averaging methods like arithmetic or even geometric averaging methods can lead to optimistic results. We also show that the no-crossflow solution is significantly different than crossflow solution at late times. We validate our method by comparing the results of the method with flow simulation results in two and multi-layered models.
