Novel models for simulating maize growth based on thermal time and photothermal Units: Applications under various mulching practices

Maize (Zea mays L.) is one of the three major food crops and an important source of carbohydrates for maintaining food security around the world.Plant height (H),stem diameter (SD),leaf area index (LAI) and dry matter (DM) are important growth parameters that influence maize production.However,the combined effect of temperature and light on maize growth is rarely considered in crop growth models.Ten maize growth models based on the modified logistic growth equation (Mlog) and the Mitscherlich growth equation (Mit) were proposed to simulate the H,SD,LAI and DM of maize under different mulching practices based on experimental data from 2015–2018.Either the accumulative growing degree-days (AGDD),helio thermal Units (HTU),photothermal Units (PTU) or photoperiod thermal Units (PPTU,first proposed here) was used as a single driving factor in the models;or AGDD was combined with either accumulative actual solar hours (ASS),accumulative photoperiod response (APR,first proposed here) or accumulative maximum possible sunshine hours (ADL) as the dual driving factors in the models.The model performances were evaluated using seven statistical indicators and a global performance index.The results showed that the three mulching practices significantly increased the maize growth rates and the maximum values of the growth curves compared with non-mulching.Among the four single factor-driven models,the overall performance of the Mlog_(PTU)Model was the best,followed by the Mlog_(AGDD)Model.The Mlog_(PPTU)Model was better than the Mlog_(AGDD)Model in simulating SD and LAI.Among the 10 models,the overall performance of the Mlog_(AGDD–APR)Model was the best,followed by the Mlog_(AGDD–ASS)Model.Specifically,the Mlog_(AGDD–APR)Model performed the best in simulating H and LAI,while the Mlog_(AGDD–ADL)and Mlog_(AGDD–ASS)models performed the best in simulating SD and DM,respectively.In conclusion,the modified logistic growth equations with AGDD and either APR,ASS or ADL as the dual driving factors outperformed the commonly used modified

Sepsis is defined as life-threatening organ dysfunction caused by a dysregulated host response to infection,which is clinical problem often faced by intensive care Units (ICU) doctors.Without positive treatment,the incidence and mortality of sepsis are high.^[1]As hospital infection control plays an essential role in treating the nosocomial infections in the ICU,and according to the clinical presentation of critically ill patients,the biological characteristics of pathogenic microorganisms and the ICU environment,this article put forward a strategy for the nosocomial infections in the ICU.

Polarization multiplexing based duplex radio-over-fiber link for millimeter wave signal transmission to a ring of multiple radio access Units

A radio-over-fiber(RoF) distributed antenna system(DAS) architecture is proposed, where millimeter wave(mm-wave) signals are transmitted to four different radio access Units(RAUs) arranged in a ring topology.The proposed architecture transmits duplex data of 128 Mb/s to each RAU in both downlink(DL) and uplink(UL)directions. The radio frequency(RF) signals are transmitted by polarization multiplexing a multi-wavelength source.Millimeter-wave signals at a frequency of 25 GHz are generated at each RAU using remote heterodyne detection.The proposed architecture provides increased coverage while maintaining good bit error rate(BER) results.

A metal-organic framework,Ce-FDM-50,was constructed by employing gallic acid featuring both carboxylate and pyrogallate as the coordinating sites and Ce(Ⅲ).The co-assembly of the carboxylates and pyrogallates with two metal ions have achieved a new type of paddle wheel secondary building unit.These building Units were further joined by organic struts to obtain frameworks in sql topology.This synthetic approach could be expanded to five different lanthanide metals(Nd,Eu,Gd,Tb,Yb)for the construction of a series of isoreticular MOFs based on FDM-50,and even MTV-MOFs in which mixed lanthanide metals with specific ratios were distributed.In addition,featuring the lanthanide metals as the inorganic nodes in the network,Tb-FDM-50 showed distinct luminescence properties that could be furtherly tuned for variable applications.

Establishing acceptance limits for uniformity of dosage Units

Uniformity of dosage Units[1]is one of the most commonly employed compendial tests to evaluate the dosage Units.In the test,the acceptance value(AV)is the key statistics-based acceptance parameter with the limit of not more than 15 to measure the uniformity degree of the dosage Units in terms of content uniformity or weight variation as applicable.With quality assurance(QA)principle,there should be some kinds of predetermined acceptance limits,like Bergum method introduced by James S.Bergum in 1990[2]and 2007[3]and recently recognized by ASTM 2709[4]and ASTM 2810[5]to ensure that the AV results for any future quality control(QC)samples will not exceed the compendial limit(NMT 15).

Generalizable items and modular structure for computerised physician staffing calculation on intensive care Units

Intensive care medicine remains one of the most costdriving areas within hospitals with high personnel costs. Under the scope of limited budgets and reimbursement, realistic needs are essential to justify personnel staffing. Unfortunately, all existing staffing models are top-down calculations with a high variability in results. We present a workload-oriented model, integrating quality of care, efficiency of processes, legal, educational, controlling, local, organisational and economic aspects. In our model, the physician's workload solely related to the intensive care unit depends on three tasks: Patient-oriented tasks, divided in basic tasks(performed in every patient) and additional tasks(necessary in patients with specific diagnostic and therapeutic requirements depending on their specific illness, only), and non patient-oriented tasks. All three tasks have to be taken into account for calculating the required number of physicians. The calculation tool further allows to determine minimal personnel staffing, distribution of calculated personnel demand regarding type of employee due to working hours per year, shift work or standby duty. This model was introduced and described first by the German Board of Anesthesiologists and the German Society ofAnesthesiology and Intensive Care Medicine in 2008 and since has been implemented and updated 2012 in Germany. The modular, flexible nature of the Excel-based calculation tool should allow adaption to the respective legal and organizational demands of different countries. After 8 years of experience with this calculation, we report the generalizable key aspects which may help physicians all around the world to justify realistic workload-oriented personnel staffing needs.

Salicylaldimine Zn(Ⅱ) complexes bearing azobenzene moieties were prepared to catalyze ring opening polymerization of various cyclic esters. The different reactivities of the trans and cis isomers of the zinc complexes provide a facile strategy to control polymerization processes as well as the compositions of the resultant polymers.
