Impact of clinical posting in psychiatry on the attitudes towards psychiatry and mental illness in undergraduate medical students

Background A major public health problem around the world today is mental illness. Although there are several studies on the topic, it is rarely conducted in the context like the current study. Aims This study aims to find out the attitudes of medical students towards psychiatry and mental illness as a clinical medicine major and evaluate the effects of clinical posting on their attitudes towards psychiatry and mental illness. Methods This is a longitudinal study of 6 months* duration conducted with students in their fifth semester of medical college in Western India during the academic year of 2016-2017. The participants were assessed by pro forma containing demographic details, and the questionnaires—Attitude Towards Psychiatry-30 items (ATP-30) scale and Mental Illness Clinician's Attitude (MICA) scale, which were presented to the students at the beginning and at the end of their psychiatry clinical posting. The statistical analysis was done with GraphPad, InStat V.3.06. A p value <0.05 was considered statistically significant. Results The students' attitudes towards psychiatry were neutral at the beginning of the psychiatry clinical posting, and improved significantly at the end of the posting on both scales: ATP-30 (p=0.002) and MICA (p=0.048). The students became more positive towards the subject and mental illness in general, negative attitudes also reduced but the change was not statistically significant (p=0.058). We found significant improvement in students' thinking towards being a psychiatrist in the future post-term (p=0.0002). The changes in attitude in terms of gender were equivocal, with an increase in positive attitude and reduction in negative attitude post-term in both sexes. Conclusion Psychiatry clinical posting aids in cultivating positive attitude towards psychiatry and mental illness and reduces the stigma associated with the students of this major and psychiatric patients.

Objective: To explore the effects of self-directed learning readiness and learning attitude on problem-solving ability among Chinese undergraduate nursing students. Methods: A convenience sampling of 460 undergraduate nursing students was surveyed in Tianjin, China. Students who participated in the study completed a questionnaire that included social demographic questionnaire, Self-directed Learning Readiness Scale, Attitude to Learning Scale, and Social Problem-Solving Inventory. Pearson’s correlation analysis was performed to test the correlations among problem-solving ability, self-directed learning readiness, and learning attitude. Hierarchical linear regression analyses were performed to explore the mediating role of learning attitude. Results: The results showed that learning attitude (r=0.338, P<0.01) and self-directed learning readiness (r=0.493, P<0.01) were positively correlated with problem-solving ability. Learning attitude played a partial intermediary role between self-directed learning readiness and problem-solving ability (F=74.227, P<0.01). Conclusions: It is concluded that nursing educators should pay attention on students’ individual differences and take proper actions to inspire students’ self-directed learning readiness and learning attitude.

Background:The undergraduate Research Mentorship Program(URMP)at the University of Pittsburgh(UPitt),School of Nursing(SoN)was envisioned and implemented in the 2008 e2009 academic year to expose undergraduate students to research early in their college educational ***,the URMP is a method to retain current students and attract new high school applicants to the ***:This article presents(1)the program's conceptualization,objectives,implementation,and outcomes using descriptive statistics and(2)the strengths of the URMP as well as the opportunities gained and lessons learned through conducting the ***:The program has shown success in attracting students to get involved in *** date,63.3%e75.7%of participating students reported gaining various research skills from the ***,URMP students have reported participating in conferences and creating close relationships with their mentors;indeed,97%of these students are interested in pursuing a graduate ***,the majority of URMP student participants(85.7%)have reported that not only the research experience met or exceeded their expectations,but also they were very satisfied with the research ***:Through the URMP,unlike a traditional didactic class,students can benefit from experiential learning,incentives to participate,and a mentoring relationship without the added pressure of obtaining grades at the end of the term.

Background:Examination anxiety is a concern for educational policymakers because of the impact it can have on the overall outcome of the performance of the candidates who partake in such ***:The aim of this study is to determine the examination anxiety level of students of Nursing and Midwifery College,Agogo,and Presbyterian University College and to evaluate the factors affecting *** and Methods:A total of 160 undergraduate nursing students comprising 80 degree and 80 diploma students were conveniently sampled for the *** study was conducted in September 2019 using a descriptive cross-sectional *** Westside Test Anxiety Scale was used to measure examination anxiety among the participants.A researcher-designed questionnaire in which participants responded to a three-point Likert scale was used to assess factors influencing examination ***:The findings of the study showed that test anxiety was higher among the diploma candidates(M=3.60)than the degree candidates(M=2.95)and the difference was statistically significant(P=0.024).Demographic characteristics such as age(P=0.009),sex(P=0.003),study hours per day(P=0.001)were found to be significantly associated with test *** factors found to influence examination anxiety among students were volume of materials to study(P=0.044),level of preparation(P=0.005)perceived difficulty of the questions(P=0.033)and myth about examinations(P=0.000).The perceived importance of the examination(P=0.057)and schedule of the exams(P=0.68)did not influence examination ***:Candidates for the licensure examination organized by the Nursing and Midwifery Council of Ghana should be assessed for test anxiety and offered the necessary psychological support where necessary.

Background: In India, undergraduate medical education has remained more or less static and for last so many decades no effective development has been done. Therefore this study is done for restructuring it and to meet the challenges faced thereby. Material and methods: Depending on the problems faced during undergraduate pathology teaching, questions were prepared and sent to pathology teachers of Odisha. In few aspects, suggestions were also asked for modification of the present system of medical curriculum including the problem of factual or information overload on students. Results: 18 questions were prepared and asked to 96 pathology teachers. The opinions mostly were to introduce small group teaching or problem based learning (PBL) and multidisciplinary integrated teaching. The opinion of students of 3rd and 4th MBBS were also taken into consideration for taking the decisions of modification. Conclusion: Efforts should be taken to bring the desired changes in undergraduate pathology education to produce need based human resources for health care in society.

The transformation of social services is one of the key tasks for the undergraduate university changing to be an applied university. This article made a text analysis on the news about social service from the column of "university events”. It shows that the social service of newly-building undergraduate university has distinctive features and has an orientation of "localness, application, openness”, which is a natural advantage. It also has the following problems: too many plans lacking systematicness, core competence and sense of participation, lower service level, out-of-date philosophy and so on. It is suggested that newly-building undergraduate university make an inner-driven transformation, with direct and active service to others.

Despite the fact that electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) is an established safe and effective procedure, its use has continued to attract controversy with considerable stigma associated with it. This often overshadows the established effectiveness. Poor knowledge, negative attitude and bias towards ECT by the nurses may translate to poor education and support to patients from whom they are expected to obtain informed consent before an ECT procedure. This study assessed the perception of undergraduate nursing students of a Nigerian university about ECT. A total of 81 students who had completed all relevant lectures and practical/clinical exposures in psychiatry as prescribed in their academic curricular participated in the study. All the consenting students were administered the socio-demographic questionnaire and modified questionnaire on attitude and knowledge of electroconvulsive therapy (QuAKE). Majority of the students responded appropriately to the principal uses of ECT. Few believed that ECT was an out-moded form of treatment, that the procedure was cruel and barbaric, that psychiatrists who still administered ECT were wicked and not responsible physicians, and that it caused permanent brain damage. The total mean score of the students was 7.53 ± 2.65. Fifty eight (71.6%) students observed an ECT procedure and followed up the patients during the posting. They scored 7.17 ± 2.55 while 23 (28.4%) students who had not observed the procedure scored 6.98 ± 1.92 on the QuAKE (t =?-0.36, p = 0.72). Thirty one (38.3%) students who would accept the procedure if indicated scored 7.14 ± 2.21 while 50 (61.7%) of them who would not allow ECT carried out on them scored 6.88 ± 1.96 (t = 0.56, p = 0.58). The mean score of 29 (35.8%) students who might pursue psychiatry as a career was 8.10 ± 1.90 while 52 (64.2%) of them who would not specialise in psychiatry scored 6.05 ± 1.79 (t = 5.00, p < 0.001). BACKGROUND: Cardiopulmonary resuscitation(CPR) is a life-saving technique which is used after cardiopulmonary arrest. Chance of survival after arrest will increase if it is coupled with sufficient knowledge. Final year undergraduate health science students and interns manage many trauma and critically ill patients in our hospital. Even though all students took CPR training in undergraduate course, we sometimes saw difficulties in the resuscitation of patients after cardiopulmonary arrest by undergraduate health professionals. This study was to assess the level of knowledge of undergraduate health science students and medical interns about cardiopulmonary ***: Hospital based cross-sectional study was conducted from February 1 to March 30, 2013. All undergraduate health professionals were included. The mean score of knowledge was compared for sex, original residence and department of the participants by using Student's t test and ANOVA with Scheffe's test. P values undergraduate health science students and interns was 11.1(SD=0.2). The mean knowledge scores of nurses, interns, health officer, midwifery, anesthesia and psychiatry nursing students were 9.84(SD=2.5), 13.34(SD=2.8), 9.81(SD=3.0), 8.77(SD=2.6), 13.31(SD=2.7) and 8.43(SD=2.4) ***: The knowledge level of undergraduate health professionals about cardiopulmonary resuscitation was insufficient. Training about CPR for undergraduate health professionals should be emphasized.

Background: Assessment is the systematic collection, review, and use of information about educational programs undertaken to improve teaching and learning. It ensures quality in training programmes, motivates, and directs students’ learning. Assessment is also used for verification of achievement of objectives of training, feedback to students, licencing, certification, and screening of students for advanced training. It is guided by several principles, including the aims of the assessment (why assess), who to assess, timing (when to assess), what to assess, methods (how to assess), and the criteria for determining the usefulness of the assessment. Objective: To describe the assessment methods used during clinical years of the undergraduate programme at Moi University School of Medicine (MUSOM) and determine the student’s perspectives concerning the comprehensiveness, relevance, objectivity of various assessment methods and challenges faced. Methodology: The study was carried out at MUSOM and a cross-sectional study design was employed. Ten study participants were studied using convenience sampling. Data were collected using an interview guide and was analyzed using content analysis. An informed consent was obtained from the study participants. Results: The methods used during clinical years at MUSOM for assessing knowledge and its applications include multiple-choice questions (MCQ), short answer questions (SAQ), modified essay questions (MEQ), long essay questions (LEQ), and oral exam. Whereas the methods for assessing clinical competence include long case, short cases, objective structured clinical examinations (OSCE), and logbook. Students felt that MCQs were comprehensive, objective, and relevant to the curriculum content. They reported that feedback was not provided after assessments. Conclusion: The assessment methods used at MUSOM during clinical years include MCQ, SAQ, MEQ, LEQ, Short cases, long cases, and OSCE. Students reported varied perceptions of the
