In this present work, ultrafiltration was applied for the purification of agro waste Greek red saffron. The agro waste saffron (before and after ultrafiltration) was used for the preparation of oil- in-water emulsions. Produced emulsions were examined for their viscosity, pH and conductivity during time. Also surface tension values of the aqueous and oily phase of the emulsions were measured. Saffron is known for its antioxidant and anti-solar properties. Anti-solar activity of saffron was evaluated by measuring the SPF value of the emulsion. UV-Vis measurements have shown an incredible increase of the absorption of saffron after ultrafiltration. The emulsions made with the purified saffron presented a better anti-solar activity and at the same time remarkably improvement of their antioxidant and antiaging properties giving a very promising alternative to the cosmetic industry.

Pilot Study of ultrafiltration-Nanofiltration Process for the Treatment of Raw Water from Huangpu River in China

Pilot-scale test was carried out to evaluate the performance of a combined ultrafiltration (UF)-nanofiltration (NF) membrane process for the treatment of raw water from Huangpu River, Shanghai, in China. Results showed that UF could significantly remove turbidity, iron and manganese, and also could retain a part of high molecular weight (MW) organic compounds. Subsequently, NF could further reject low MW organics and inorganic salts, and ensured the treated water to reach the Standards for Drinking Water Quality in China. It seemed that 90 L/m2·h was an appropriate permeate flux for UF system when the raw water was directly filtered by UF membrane, the addition of coagulant (alum or ferric chloride) was not preferable to mitigate the fouling of the UF membrane. After near 120 days operation, the permeate flux of NF could be main-tained at 24-25 L/m2·h steadily, and no chemical clean was required.

In order to improve the purification properties of polysulfone (PSF) ultrafiltration membranes (UFM), nano-graphene oxide (nano-GO) was taken as modifier, and the physical blending process was adopted in our experiment. The microstructure, surface morphology and functional groups of modified UFM have been characterized respectively by scanning electron microscopy, atomic force microscopy and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, and the static contact angle between the membrane surface and the water droplet has also been detected to show the change of its hydrophilicity. Through experiments, it has been found that modified UFM has larger and more developed finger micro-pores, and there exist a large number of -OH groups on its surface, and also its hydrophilicity has been enhanced. The result of the experiments show that the modified UFM may keep rejection above 97% and its water flux can be reached at about 219.1 L/(m2·h) under pressure of 1 bar if 0.4 wt% of nano-GO was added. Additionally, the nano-GO can increase the flux recovery radio (FRR) of the membranes, and the maximum FRR was observed as 74.4% if 0.3 wt% of nano-GO was appended.

Red Beetroot Juice and Stamina: An Experimental Study

Introduction: Red beet juice is increasingly used in sports to enhance the endurance of athletes. To increase the specific efficiency of red beet juice, the method of its fractionation by ultrafiltration was used for the first time. The purpose of the study was to evaluate the effect of fractionated beetroot juice on the strength and endurance of laboratory rats. Methods: Male Wistar rats (6 groups;n = 10) were used in the study. In addition to the standard chow, some groups of rats 2 h before the exercises received 0.5 ml of native (RBJ) or fractionated (FRBJ) per os. Three groups of animals were trained using a motorized wheel with a gradual speed increase over four weeks: 20 min/day for five days a week. Muscle strength of animals in all groups was measured by electronic dynamometry and the endurance of rats was evaluated once a week using electrical stimulation on a racetrack which moved at a speed of 15 m/min. The test was performed an hour after the ingestion of RBJ or FRBJ. At the end of the experiment, biochemical blood indices were determined. FRBJ was prepared by the original method. Results: Most significant differences in the chemical composition of RBJ and FRBJ were found for glutamic acid, of which the content was 67.2% higher than in native juice. The greatest changes during the experiment were in the mass of the rats’ calf muscles. Regular running exercise caused a 29% increase in muscle mass. The additional increase in m. gastrocnemius was also provided y FRBJ – 12%. The combination of physical activity and the introduction of red beet derivate led to the increase of the calf muscle mass by 121% within a month. Assessing the endurance of animals by frequency of falling from the treadmill, we can conclude that compared with untrained animals, trained rats receiving FRBJ had three times higher levels of endurance. Conclusion: Consumption of FRBJ led to increased muscle strength in rats and the ergogenic effect of the product was significantly higher in combination with physical activity.

This work described a sensitive method for determination of metoprolol in rabbit plasma.The method involved purification by ultrafiltration,derivatization with fluorescein isothiocyanate,determination by capillary electrophoresis（CE） coupled with laser-induced fluorescence（LIF） detector.Other components in plasma including a variety of amino acids and proteins did not interfere with the determination of metoprolol in experimental condition.The assay had a wide range（2.0-500 ng/mL） of linearity and a detection limit of 0.8 ng/mL.The intra- and inter-day precisions were satisfactory with relative standard deviation（RSD） less than 10.0%and accuracy within 10.0%.This method was successfully applied to pharmacokinetic study of metoprolol in rabbit blood.

[Objective] The study aimed to discover the effects of powder active carbon（ PAC） /flotation /micro-flocculation /ultrafiltration combined process on the treatment of reservoir water. [Method]Taken the water from a mountainous reservoir for the initial samples,the parameters such as turbidity,COD Mn,chlorophyll-a and methylisobormeol（ MIB） of water samples were monitored before and after treated with combined processes of micro-flocculation /ultrafiltration, flotation /micro-flocculation /ultrafiltration, PAC /flotation /micro-flocculation /ultrafiltration. [Result] The results showed that the removal rates of turbidity of water samples by the above three processes were 97. 5%,98. 0% and 98. 6%,respectively. The removal rates of COD Mn were 30. 9%,35. 0% and 52. 0%. The removal rates of chlorophyll-a were 80. 6%,91. 0% and 99. 0%. The removal rates of MIB were 17. 0%,34. 2% and 97. 0%. [Conclusion]The PAC /flotation /micro-flocculation ultrafiltration combined process can be flexibly combined based on the characteristics of algae and odor in water,and is suitable for water plant construction or reconstruction.

Cross-flow ultrafiltration techniques have been used to separate colloidal organic carbon (COC) from natural water, and COC in three water samples that were collected from Huanghe, Changjiang and Qiantang River was determined. On average, COC comprised about 68.6% of the total dissolved organic carbon. The abundance of COC suggested that COC could play important roles in input fluxes and biogeochemistry of organic carbon.

In this work,the viability of Solidago Canadensis L. for cellulose acetate membrane production was tested. The cellulose was extracted from Solidago Canadensis L. stem by organic solvents,and the cellulose diacetate was obtained by acetylization of cellulose. The properties of the intermediate products of cellulose pulp and cellulose diacetate were characterized by FT-IR and XRD. Compared with commercial cellulose diacetate,the properties of cellulose diacetate were similar to those of the commercial cellulose diacetate. The cellulose acetate membrane with desirable pure water flux and rejection rate was obtained from cellulose diacetate by solution casting. The membrane showed favorable hydrophilic property so that it had good anti-pollution performance. The maximum pure water flux of the membrane was 27. 21 m L /( cm2· h) and the maximum rejection rate was 80. 39%. The results demonstrated that the membrane obtained from herbaceous plant: Solidago Canadensis L. had good performance of ultrafiltration.

＜正＞ The objective of this study was to evaluate the use of ultrafiltration （UF） to remove large surface-active materials from wastewater prior to biological treatment or fermentation, as a new alternative of foam prevention to chemical and mechanical means. This antifoam strategy was applied to the treatment of wastewater in the gourmet powder production process. The fermentor working volume, removal ratios of pollutant loads, and yeast yield were increased significantly compared with the conventional fermentation process.

The nanoparticles of SiO2 were used in cement systems to modify the rheological behavior, to enhance the reactivity of supplementary cementitious materials, and also to improve the strength and durability. In this research, low-cost nano-SiO2 particles from natural hydrothermal solutions obtained by membrane ultrafiltration and, optionally, by cryochemical vacuum sublimation drying, were evaluated in portland cement based systems. The SiO2-rich solutions were obtained from the wells of Mutnovsky geothermal power station （Far East of Russia）. The constant nano-SiO2 dosage of 0.25% （as a solid material by weight of cementitious materials） was used to compare the cement systems with different nanoparticles against a reference mortar and a commercially available nano-SiO2. Nanoparticles were characterized by X-Ray Diffraction （XRD）, BET Surface Area, Scanning Electron Microscope （SEM） and Fourier Transform Infrared （FTIR） spectroscopy techniques. It was demonstrated that the addition of polycarboxylate ether superplasticizer and the dispersion treatment using an ultrasound processor can be used to facilitate the distribution ofnano-SiOz particles in the mixing water. The effect ofnano-SiO2 particles in portland cement mortars was investigated by evaluating the flow, heat of hydration and compressive strength development. It was demonstrated that the use ofnano- SiO2 particles can reduce the segregation and improve strength properties.
