Despite its efficiency, the general approach of hardcoding protocol format descriptions in packet processing applications suffers from many limitations. Among the others, the lack of flexibility when needing to extend the software for supporting new protocols, and the proliferation of modules with similar functionality between different applications, resulting in decreased maintainability. The NetPDL language was defined for overcoming such limitations, allowing decoupling applications from the knowledge of the format of protocol headers. The main criticism to NetPDL relates to its supposed performance penalties;this paper demonstrates that this language can be effectively used for the dynamic generation of optimized, i.e. efficient and fast, packet-processing code, and presents the architecture of a compiler implemented for such purpose.

We examined microsecondand submicrosecond-scale pulses in electric field records of cloud and cloud-to-ground lightning discharges acquired in summer 2006,in Gainesville,Florida.A total of 12 cloud and 12 ground flashes were analyzed in detail,with the electric field record length being 96 or 200 ms and sampling interval being 4 or 10 *** majority of pulses in both cloud and ground discharges analyzed in this study were associated with the initial breakdown process and were relatively small in amplitude and *** typical durations were an order of magnitude smaller than tens of microseconds characteristic of "classical" preliminary breakdown *** estimated that 26% of the pulses in the 12 cloud discharges and 22% of the pulses in the 12 cloud-to-ground discharges had total durations less that 1 μs.

The cooperative dirty paper coding （DPC） rate region is investigated in a two-transmitter two-receiver network with full channel state information available at all terminals. The transmitters cooperate by first exchanging messages over an orthogonal cooperation channel,then they mimic a broadcast channel （BC） and jointly perform DPC to send to the two independent receivers. The allocation of network power and bandwidth between the data and the cooperation channel is studied to characterize the cooperative DPC rate region. First,the optimal sum power allocation for a multiple access channel （MAC） is presented. Then through an application of the MACBC capacity duality,the cooperative DPC rate region is evaluated under different bandwidth allocation assumptions. Cooperative DPC outperforms non-cooperative time-division （TD） only when the cooperation channel is strong,since the joint-encoding capacity gain is negated by the overhead of message exchanges in a weak cooperation channel. Moreover,the cooperative capacity advantage over TD is more pronounced at the maximum sum rate point than when the rate vector is skewed toward one of the users.

Several recent works have attempted to determine whether the process that introduces errors into transmissions over a wireless channels is long range dependent （LRD）.Most of these efforts were focused on IEEE 802.11b/g *** of LRD is of significant interest to designers of wireless network *** experiment-based study attempts to gain a better understanding of the recently standardized IEEE 802.15.4 Low Rate-Wireless Personal Area Network （LR-WPAN） *** determine whether the bit,symbol and packet level error processes are LRD or *** the memory length of the channel measurable and finite,or is it sufficiently long to qualify it as an LRD process? We record channel behavior by capturing all transmissions at the receiver including the ones that would under normal operation be dropped and use these to generate residual error *** perform statistical data analysis of these traces using various tools for scenarios with and without interference from 802.11b/g *** the bit and symbol level error process we conclude that channel memory remains fixed at 2 bits and 2 symbols respectively regardless of channel and *** the packet level error process we conclude that the perception of on and off LRD is actually due to interference from co-located 802.11b/g networks.
