Background:Hepatocellular carcinoma(HCC)and intrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma(ICC)are the most common subtypes of primary liver cancer,but nationwide incidence of both liver cancer subtypes have never been reported in China.We aimed to estimate the most recent incidence of HCC and ICC and temporal trends in China based on the most updated data from high qualified population-based cancer registries(covering 13.1%of the national population),in comparison to those in the United States at the same period.Methods:We used data from 188 Chinese population-based cancer registries covering 180.6 million population of China to estimate the nationwide incidence of HCC and ICC in 2015.And 22 population-based cancer registries’data were used to estimate the trends of HCC and ICC incidence from 2006 to 2015.Multiple imputation by chained equations method was used to impute liver cancer cases with unknown subtype(50.8%).We used data from 18 population-based registries from the Surveillance,Epidemiology,and End Results program to analyze incidence of HCC and ICC in the United States.Results:In China,an estimated 301,500 and 61,900 newly diagnosed HCC and ICC occurred in 2015.The overall age-standardized rates(ASRs)of HCC incidence decreased by 3.9%per year.For ICC incidence,the overall ASR was relatively stable,but increased in the population of over 65 years old.Subgroup analysis by age showed that the ASR of HCC incidence had the sharpest decline in population who were less than 14 years old and received neonatally hepatitis B virus(HBV)vaccination.In the United States,though the incidence of HCC and ICC were lower than those in China,the overall HCC and ICC incidence increased by 3.3%and 9.2%per year.Conclusions:China still faces with a heavy burden of liver cancer incidence.Our results may further support the beneficial effect of Hepatitis B vaccination on reduction of HCC incidence.Both healthy lifestyle promotion and infection control are needed for future liver cancer control and prevention for China and the United States.

Variations of extreme temperature in the Mount Qomolangma region in China during 1971-2020

According to observational daily temperature data from the meteorological stations during 1971-2020,the variations of the extreme temperature event in the Mount Qomolangma(also known as Mount Everest) region in China have been analyzed using statistical methods.The extreme temperature indices recommended by the World Meteorological Organization are selected to describe the extreme temperature event.The RClimDEX 1.0 software is used to calculate the extreme temperature indices.There are no tropical nights,and just three summer days at the last 50 years.The frost days are the main extreme temperature events all year round.The temperature in the north slope is more extreme than that in the south slope of the Mount Qomolangma.There is remarkable decadal variation for the extreme temperature indices except diurnal temperature range.There are the warm extremes increasing,however,the cold extremes decreasing with the decadal lapse,which is more remarkable into the 21^(th) century.The tendencies for the extreme temperature indices in the north slope are consistent with those in the south slope.There are statistically significant trends for most extreme temperature indices during the study period.It shows that the warm extremes would be more prominent in the future with the global continued warming.The abrupt changes of the extreme temperature index have occurred mainly in the 20^(th) century especially from the mid to late 1980s and 1990s.The periodic changes in the south slope do not synchronize those in the north slope for the most extreme temperature indices.It is different for most extreme temperature indices between the south and north slope,which has demonstrated that the regional or local changes are not neglectable for extreme temperature research.The results of this study are also the consistent response of extreme temperature event to the global warming.

Gross primary production(GPP)is the largest flux and a crucial player in the terrestrial carbon cycle and has been studied extensively,yet large uncertainties remain in the spatiotemporal patterns of GPP in both observations and simulations.This study evaluates the performance of the second version of the Beijing Climate Center Atmosphere−Vegetation Interaction Model(BCC_AVIM2.0)in simulating GPP on multiple spatial and temporal scales in the Coupled Model Intercomparison Project Phase 6(CMIP6)experiments.Model simulations driven by two meteorological datasets were compared with two observation-based GPP products covering 1982–2008.Spatial patterns of annual GPP show a significant latitudinal gradient in each dataset,increasing from cold(tundra)and dry(desert)biomes to warm(temperate)and humid(tropical rainforest)biomes.BCC_AVIM2.0 overestimates GPP in most parts of the globe,especially in boreal forest regions and Southeast China,while underestimating GPP in subhumid regions in eastern South America and tropical Africa.The four datasets broadly agree on the GPP seasonal cycle,but BCC_AVIM2.0 predicts an earlier beginning of spring growth and a larger amplitude of seasonal variations than those in the observations.The observation-based datasets exhibit slight interannual variability(IAV)and weak GPP linear trends,while the BCC_AVIM2.0 simulations demonstrate relatively large year-to-year variability and significant trends in the low-latitudes and temperate monsoon regions in North America and East Asia.Regarding the possible relationships between annual means of GPP and climate factors,BCC_AVIM2.0 predicts more extensive regions of the globe where the IAV of annual GPP is dominated by precipitation,especially in mid-to-high latitudes of the Northern Hemisphere and tropical Africa,while the observed GPP in the above regions is temperature-or radiation-dominant.The positive GPP biases due to earlier spring growth in boreal forest regions and negative GPP biases in off-equator tropical areas in the BCC_AVIM2.0 simul

OBJECTIVE:There is a lack of data focusing on non-communicable disease (NCD) mortality in the Chinese elderly population over the past decade.;METHODS:Using mortality data from the Chinese Health Statistics, we explored the crude and age-standardized mortality trend of three major NCDs in the Chinese population ≥65 years of age from 2002 to 2010, namely, malignant neoplasms, heart diseases, and cerebrovascular diseases. Subpopulations characterized as rural and urban residence, and by gender and age were examined separately.;RESULTS:Mortality increased with age and was higher among males than among females across the three NCDs, with the gender difference being most remarkable for malignant neoplasms and least for heart diseases mortality. Condition-specific crude mortalities increased between 2002 and 2010, overall and in all the pre-specified subpopulations. After age-standardization, rising trends were observed for people ≥65 years old, and condition-specific mortalities generally increased in rural regions and decreased in urban regions, especially for cerebrovascular diseases.;CONCLUSIONS:There were increasing trends for mortality due to malignant neoplasms, heart diseases, and cerebrovascular diseases in China between 2002 and 2010, which were largely driven by the population aging. Disparities existed by rural and urban residence, gender, and age.

Speed and trend of China's Urbanization: A Comparative Study Based on Cross-Country Panel Data Model

This article investigates the speed and trend of urbanization in China and other countries by applying a non-linear model with panel data from 41 big countries with a population of over ten millions. It fi nds that the relationship between China's urbanization and economic development presents a less fl uctuating S-shaped curve which refl ects the variation in urbanization between China and other large countries. Calculated in line with the PPP(purchasing power parity) of 2009, China's rapid urbanization started when the GDP per capita reached 1,339 US dollars and the urbanization level was 22.92%, though lower than the world average by 5.16 percentage points. China's rapid urbanization ends when the GDP per capita reaches 12,088 US dollars and the urbanization level amounts to 50.69%, with the percentage lower than the world average by 16.32 percentage points. And China's urbanization will be completed when the GDP per capita climbs to 28,306 US dollars and the urbanization level reaches 61.55%, 12.32 percentage points lower than the world average then. Nevertheless, the unique background of China, including its socio-economic development, land institutional arrangements, and authoritarian political system, will have a great impact on the urbanization trend. Particularly, as China's socio-economic reform deepens, China's urbanization level will reach a new height.

Modern industry in northeast China started from light industry. From the end of 19th century to 1931 was the phase of initial development of light industry in northeast China. During this period, the development of light industry gave priority to grain processing industry. After occupying northeast China, Japanese vigorously developed heavy industry to meet the needs of munitions and paid more attention to raw materials and semi-finished articles industry for the purpose of the war. Light industry was impeded and developed slowly. After the founding of New China, large-scale economic construction took place in northeast and heavy industry received prior investment and equipment. Northeast region became the first heavy industry base through several five-year plans, the development of light industry made giant strides. The present features of light industry distribution are: difference of light industry distribution, similarity of light industry structure, and imbalance of light industry development.
