Introduction: Acute viral hepatitis is a relatively common infection resulting in hospital attendance after foreign travel. travellers and doctors are generally aware of hepatitis A and the fact that safe and effective immunisation is available. In contrast, there is no widely available vaccine for hepatitis E and most physicians’ experience with this condition is limited. Over the last few years, the number of cases of hepatitis E has increased. Methods: We examined the prevalence of hepatitis A and E among patients presenting to the Hospital for Tropical Diseases between 2000 and 2009. Travel history, demographics and laboratory parameters of these patients were compared. Results: The annual incidence of hepatitis A remained static, while that of hepatitis E increased from 1 to 4. Hepatitis E was associated with older age, travel to the Indian sub-continent (ISC), and visiting friends and relatives (VFR). Peak ALT was similar between patients with hepatitis A or E, but as many as a third of those with hepatitis E developed a prolonged INR, compared to 11% of those with hepatitis A. In addition, patients with hepatitis E had a longer hospital admission by a median of 3 days. Conclusion: Hepatitis E is now the commonest cause of faeco-oral viral hepatitis at this centre, and is associated with laboratory features suggestive of more severe liver damage and longer hospital stay.

Analysis and Assessment on the Health State of International travellers——An analysis on results of disease surveillance examination of persons entering or leaving the territory via Guangdong ports from 1987 to 1995

The results of disease surveillance examination of persons entering or leaving the territory via ports in Guangdong province from 1987 to 1995 were collected and the relatively complete data were chosen for statistical analysis in this paper. 4,110,187 examination items were completed from 647,987 persons entering or leaving the territory, 88,522 persons suffering from diseases or being antigen positive have been found and the total detected rate was 2.15%. The detected rates of sexual transmitted diseases such as AIDS, syphilis, gonorrhea are higher in persons from outside the territory than in persons from the interior, 0.10%, 0.25% and 0.30% respectively for the formers and 0.01%, 0.07% and 0.04% respectively for the latters; nevertheless, the detected rate of pulmonary tuberculosis in persons from the interior was higher than that in persons from outside the territory, 0.08% for the former, 0.03% for the latter. The authors discussed the examination results and pointed out that it was of great importance to strengthen the surveillance of sexual transmitted diseases in presons from outside the territory and the tuberculosis surveillance and control in persons from the interior. Once the pulmonary TB cases were found they should be put under strict chemotherapeutic menagement. Attention should also be paid to the detection of malignant tumors in early stage during physical examination, which may contribute to the easly radical cure of malignant tumor and the improvement of people’s health level.

Effect of Machine Setting Parameters on Ring Slub Carded Yarn Quality and Spinning Performance

At present ring slub carded yarn is very popular to produce value added product for ornamentation purpose in the apparel industry. During spinning different parameters influenced the spinning performance. The main aim of this study was to investigate the effect of spindle speed as well as traveller weight on yarn quality. The Ne 28, Ne 30 and Ne 34 carded slub yarns were produced at the spindle speed of 15,500 rpm, 16,000 rpm, 16,500 rpm, 17,000 rpm and 17,500 rpm on the ring frame with using traveller number 3/0, 4/0, 5/0 and 6/0. The yarn properties like mass variation percentage (CVm%), unevenness (U%), hairiness, yarn breakage rate, yarn imperfection were investigated. It was found that traveller number 5/0 showed lower Um%, CVm% for Ne 28 and Ne 30 carded slub yarn compared to traveller number 3/0 and 4/0. On the other hand traveller number 6/0 showed better Um%, CVm%, thin places (-50%)/km and end breakage% for Ne 34 carded slub yarn compared to traveller number 4/0 and 5/0. It was also observed that increasing end breakage rate as the spindle speed of ring frame was increased.
