titania-silica Composites: A Review on the Photocatalytic Activity and Synthesis Methods

The photocatalyic activity of titania is a very promising mechanism that has many possible applications like purification of air and water [1]-[4]. To make it even more attractive, titania can be combined with silica to increase the photocatalytic efficiency and durability of the photocatalytic material, while lowering the production costs [1]. In this article, relevant literature is reviewed to obtain an overview about the chemistry and physics behind some of the different parameters that lead to cost-effective photocatalytic titania-silica composites. The first part of this review deals with the mechanisms involved in the photocatalytic activity, then the chemistry behind certain methods for the synthesis of the titania-silica composites is discussed, and in the last and third part of this review, the influence of silica supports on titania is discussed. These three sections represent three different fields of research that are combined in this review to obtain better insights on the photocatalytic titania-silica composites. While many research subjects in these fields have been well known for some time now, some subjects are only more recently resolved and some subjects are still under discussion (e.g. the cause for the increased hydrophilic surface of titania after illumination). This article aims to review the most important literature to give an overview of the current situation of the fundamentals of photocatalysis and synthesis of the cost-effective photocatalyic composites. It is found that the most cost-effective photocatalytic titania-silica composites are the ones that have a thin anatase layer coated on silica with a large specific surface area, and are prepared with the precipitation or sol-gel methods.

Development of a Low Temperature Sol-Gel-Derived titania-silica Implant Coating

Objective of this study was to develope low temperature sol-gel coatings for shape memory metal (NiTi) and evaluate their biocompatibility on NiTi suture material. A series of low temperature TiO2 and TiO2-SiO2 sol-gel coatings were prepared on glass substrates. The silica content of TiO2-SiO2 coatings ranged from 0 to 30 mol%. The coatings were also prepared with polyethyleneglycol (PEG). The contact angle and photocatalytic activity measurements were used to evaluate the surface properties of the coatings. Stability of the coatings was tested in simulated body fluid (SBF). The TiO2-SiO2 90/10 film made with PEG was more hydrophilic, showed photocatalytic activity and was crack-free after the SBF test, thus it was chosen to animal experiment as a new experimental coating. Uncoated NiTi suture and the suture coated with high temperature TiO2 were used as reference materials. NiTi sutures were inserted subcutaneously on the back of rat for four weeks. In routine histological examinations all materials showed good biocompatibility with mild inflammatory cell reaction. No significant differences in the soft tissue response among the materials were observed. Both the high and new low temperature processed sol-gel coatings remained attached on the sutures confirming the suitability of the coating technique on thin NiTi sutures.

Ti-Si composite oxide-supported cobalt catalysts for CO_2 hydrogenation

In the present work, different silica-based supported cobalt （Co） catalysts were synthesized and used for CO2 hydrogenation for methanation. Different supports, such as SSP, MCM-41, TiSSP and TiMCM were used to prepare Co catalysts with 20 wt% Co loading. The supports and catalysts were characterized by means of N2 physisorption, XRD, SEM/EDX, XPS, TPR and CO chemisorption. It is found that after calcination of catalysts, Ti is present in the form of anatase. The introduction of Ti plays important roles in the properties of Co catalysts by：（i） facilitating the reduction of Co oxides species which are strongly interacted with support, （ii） preventing the formation of silicate compounds, and （iii） inhibiting the RWGS reaction. Based on CO2 hydrogenation, the CoTiMCM catalyst exhibites the highest activity and stability.
