The present study was to evaluate thyme and ajwain as antibiotic growth promoter substitutions on growth performance,carcass characteristics and serum biochemistry in Japanese quails(Coturnix japonica).A feeding trial was conducted over 28 d with 4 groups of Japanese quails fed experimental diets formulated to provide no supplementation(control),or control t 55 mg zinc bacitracin/kg,2 g thyme/kg,and 2 g ajwain/*** 35 d of age,2 quails from each replicate were sacrificed and ***,empty small intestine and heart were weighed and calculated as a percentage of live body *** carcasses were weighed and the cuts were performed to evaluate the yield of legs and *** 35 d of age,2 quails per replicate were chosen and approximately 1-m L blood samples were collected through brachial vein,and concentrations of albumin,total protein,triglyceride,total cholesterol,and high density lipoprotein(HDL)-cholesterol were *** body weight were not affected by the dietary treatment whereas,it tended to increase in quails supplemented with *** feed conversation ratio values were similar though it tended to improve in quails supplemented with thyme compared with other *** feed intake,internal organ weights and carcass traits were not influenced by the dietary *** total cholesterol contents were lower(P thyme compared with other *** was concluded that the addition of 2 g/kg thyme can improve serum biochemistry in quails,although its effects on performance criteria was negligible.

Objective: To evaluate the anti-inflammatory, anticoagulant and antioxidant effects of aqueous extracts of thyme varieties from ***: The aqueous extracts of tree medicinal plants [Thymus atlanticus(T. atlanticus), Thymus satureioides and Thymus zygis(T. zygis)] were screened for their antioxidant activity using 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl radical-scavenging, ferric reducing antioxidant power assay, radical scavenging activity method, the inhibition of 2,2'-azobis(2-amidinopropane) dihydrochloride that induces oxidative erythrocyte hemolysis and thiobarbituric acid reactive substances assay. The anti-inflammatory activity of aqueous extracts was evaluated in vivo using croton oil-induced ear edema and carrageenan-induced paw edema in mice and rats, respectively. This extracts were evaluated in vitro for their anticoagulant activity at the different concentrations by partial thromboplastin time and prothrombin time activated. Results: All thyme varieties were found to possess considerable antioxidant activity and potent anti-inflammatory activity in the croton oil-induced edema. Administration of aqueous extracts of two varieties(50 mg/kg)(T. zygis and T. atlanticus) reduced significantly the carrageenaninduced paw edema similar to non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug(indomethacin, 10 mg/kg). In partial thromboplastin time and prothrombin time tests, T. atlanticus and T. zygis extracts showed the strongest anticoagulant activity. In contrast, Thymus satureioides did not show the anticoagulant activity in these tests. Conclusions: All aqueous extracts possess considerable antioxidant activity and are rich in total polyphenol and flavonoid but they act differently in the process of inflammatory and coagulation studied. This study shows great variability of biological activities in thyme varieties.

This experiment was conducted to evaluate the effect of cocoa and thyme powder separately or in combination on serum biochemical parameters and humoral immune responses in broiler *** hundred and forty day-old broiler chicks（Ross 308） were randomly assigned to four treatments with four replicates of 15 chicks based on a completely randomized *** dietary treatments included the basal diet as control,supplemented groups receiving 3 g/kg cocoa powder,5 g/kg thyme powder and 2+3 g/kg a combination of cocoa and thyme added to the basal *** samples were taken at 28 d to quantify antibody titer production against Newcastle and Influenza viruses and *** biochemical metabolites and leucocyte types were determined at 42 d of *** total protein and globulin concentration increased significantly（p＜0.05） in birds fed diets supplemented with a combination of *** supplementation resulted in a marked reduction of serum total and HDL cholesterol compared to control group（p＜0.05）.Dietary treatments did not induce any significant impacts on antibody titer production,heterophil,lymphocyte,monocyte and eosinophil counts,albumin to globulin and heterophil to lymphocyte *** conclusion application of thyme and cocoa powder,particularly their combination in broiler diets has the potential to improve serum biochemical values but failed to have favourable impact on humoral immune responses of the birds.

Currently, the food industry, including the meat industry, is paying close attention to the use of natural additives as preservatives. From ancient times, the plants are used to treat various diseases, to produce perfumes and as ingredients to improve the taste in food. This paper presents a bibliographic and experimental study of the antioxidant and microbial properties of basil, thyme and tarragon. International scientific papers on the use of these plants in the food industry, including the meat industry, are targeted. The role of basil, thyme and tarragon in the manufacture of functional and stable products in storage is mentioned. Percentage decrease in Salmonella Abony growth under the influence of basil constituted 84.4%, thyme 61.6% and tarragon 76.8% after 48 hours of action and respectively 97.2%, 90.2% and 95.3% after 72 hours of action. The interdependence between the percentage reduction of S. Abony infestation and the concentration of basil, mushrooms and tarragon was respectively: basil (R2 = 0.7725 … 0.7916), thyme (R2 = 0.7733 … 0.7768), tarragon (R2 = 0.7689 … 0.8137).

Numbers of 300 day-old broiler chickens through a CRD design with 5 treatments, 3 replicates and 20 chicks in each pen were used to evaluate the effect of thyme (T), licorice (L), thyme + licorice (TL), and enzyme supplemented (E) diets on performance, immune and carcass characteristics. According to the results, performance traits, immune indices, and carcass traits in herbal medicine and enzyme supplemented diets were improved significantly than control diet (P thyme and licorice singly or in combination as organic herbal medicine can affect performance, carcass and immune characteristics. Also an improved immune organ such as burse or spleen in this study indicates that this herbal medicine can promote the immune situation and efficacy of health and livability.

The objectives of this study were to use the dry thyme leaves as source of nonhaeme iron and evaluate the effects of calcium, phosphorus and calcium + phosphorus on nonhaeme iron absorption and haematogenic characteristics in rats. Thirty adult male albino rats, weighing 150 ± 5 g were divided into five groups. The first group fed basal diet, the second group fed thyme diet, the third group fed thyme diet + calcium, the fourth group fed thyme diet + phosphorus and the fifth group fed thyme diet + calcium + phosphorus. All groups fed experimental diets for six weeks. Hemoglobin (Hb), haematocrit (Ht), red blood cell (RBC), mean corpuscular volume (MCV), serum iron (SI), serum ferritin (SF), total iron–binding capacity and transferrin saturation were determined at the beginning and the at end of the experiment. Iron in diet, Fe intake, Fe feces and Fe absorption were also evaluated. The results indicated that the lowest Fe absorption was observed in rats fed the thyme diet + calcium and thyme diet + calcium + phosphorus. Supplementation the thyme diet with calcium or calcium + phosphorus decreased the values of Hb, Ht, RBC, SI and SF. However, supplementation the thyme diet with phosphorus did not affect in Ht, RBC and MCV but Hb, SI and SF increased. The results suggest that supplementation the diet with calcium or calcium + phosphorus interfere with iron absorption.

The Effect of Air Temperature on Growth of Eight Herb Species

The effect of different constant air temperatures (18°C, 21°C, 24°C and 27°C) and variable temperatures (24°C/18°C and 27°C/15°C in 12 h/12 h periods) on basil, sage, thyme, lemon balm, cilantro, rosemary, oregano and rocket was studied. Supplementary lighting was given 16 h·day-1 at a photon flux density (PFD) of 150 μmol·m-2·s-1 (corresponding to 8.6 mol·m-2·day-1 photosynthetic active radiation [PAR]). Including daylight the PAR was 29.6 ± 6.9 mol·m-2·day-1 as a mean during the experimental period. Increasing the temperature from 18°C to 27°C increased the fresh weight in basil (106%), sage (95%), rosemary (126%) and rocket (62%), while an increase from 18°C to 24°C increased the weight in lemon balm (78%), cilantro (41%), oregano (40%) and thyme (58%). For the last four species the fresh weight was unaffected by a further increase to 27°C. No significant difference was found between the 24°C/18°C and 27°C/15°C treatments. These treatments gave a mean temperature of about 21°C, and no significant differences were found between these treatments and the constant 21°C treatment. The plant height generally increased in the same proportion as the fresh weight increased in the different species. No differences were visually observed between the treatments after two weeks under indoor conditions. All species remained green except cilantro and rocket, for which some leaf yellowing took place. A simple test indicated that the flavour increased with increasing temperature (from 18°C to 27°C) in all species except cilantro.
