Grain Weight 8(GW8) in rice is a SQUAMOSA Promoter-Binding Protein-Like(SPL) family transcription factor with multiple biological functions. In this study, three GW8 homoeologs were cloned from homoeologous group 7 chromosomes of wheat. Subcellular localization and trans-activation activity assays suggested that Ta GW8 is a transcriptional activator.Ta GW8 genes were preferentially expressed in young spikes and developing grains. Ectopic expressions of Ta GW8 in Arabidopsis and rice resulted in enhanced vegetative growth,earlier flowering and larger seeds. Ta GW8-7 A was the most highly variable of the three homoeologs with four haplotypes(Hap-1/2/3/4). Ta GW8-7 B had two haplotypes(Hap-L/H).Ta GW8-7 A-Hap-2 was associated with high thousand-grain weight(TGW) and large kernel length and showed higher transcriptional levels and binding activity than the other haplotypes. The high frequency of Ta GW8-7 A-Hap-2 in Chinese wheat populations suggested that it had been extensively selected in breeding. This haplotype showed a high potential for exploitation in global wheat breeding because its frequency was low in exotic germplasm. Ta GW8-7 B-Hap-H produced abundant transcripts and was associated with early heading and maturity, less tiller number and high TGW. This haplotype might be suitable for multiple cropping systems due to short wheat season. In this study we identified sub-functionalization among Ta GW8 homoeologs and obtained functional molecular markers that can be used in breeding for high grain yield.

Background: The guild concept is useful for understanding the community structure in a land-bridge island system,but most fragmentation studies have focused only on the importance of island area and isolation, other island attributes such as perimeter-area ratio(PAR) were overlooked or understudied.Methods: We have adopted a guild approach to investigate the impacts of island attributes on bird guild richness on a set of 41 recently isolated land-bridge islands in the thousand Island Lake(TIL), China.Results: We found insectivores had the largest number of species(34 species), fol owed by understory foraging guilds(28 species), omnivores(27 species) and canopy guilds(25 species). Furthermore, our data showed that migrants and residents responded equal y to island area, insectivores and understory guilds were sensitive to island area but omnivores and canopy guilds were not very sensitive. Most guild richness was determined by island area, except for omnivores and canopy guilds.Conclusions: Although PAR or habitat diversity found to be important for bird species richness, our results highlight the importance of island area in maintaining bird diversity in fragmented island systems.

The decline in China’s population has come earlier than expected.It not only brings a cognitive impact,but more importantly,it may lead to delays in adjusting economic and social policies.According ro data released by the National Bureau of Statistics(NBS)in January,China’s total population at the end of 2022 was 1.41175 billion,a drop of 850,000 on 2021,with a natural growth rate of minus 0.60 per thousand.This shows that China’s population entered negative growth in 2022 after peaking in 2021.The declining fertility rate and the increasing aging rate,along with the population growth rate changing from positive to negative,are natural processes of economic and social development,which are within expectations and a natural result.However,the timing is unexpected.More attention should be devoted to better understanding how to make timely policy adjustments.

Asparagus officinalis L.is favored by its high health function,but its hybrid seeds are expensive.The amount of seed,seed plumpness and germination rate are related to the production costs of breeding enterprises and large growers.Therefore,it is necessary to investigate the seed number and thousand kernel weight of A.officinalis L.This study developed a quick and accurate method to measure the seed number and thousand kernel weight of A.officinalis L.using image processing technology.Seed sample of A.officinalis L.was scanned with 200 dpi resolution,and the seed number was then obtained using Image-ProPlus software.After weighing the seeds,thousand kernel weight was finally calculated.By recording‘macro’,the batch processing of the samples can also be realized.This method is simple and accurate,and can greatly save the time of investigation.
