Indispensable gutter layers in thin-film composite membranes for carbon capture

Industrial thin-film composite(TFC)membranes achieve superior gas separation properties from high-performance selective layer materials,while the success of membrane technology relies on high-performance gutter layers to achieve production scalability and low-cost ***,the current literature predominantly focuses on the design of polymer architectures to obtain high permeability and selectivity,while the art of fabricating gutter layers is usually safeguarded by industrial manufacturers and appears lackluster to academic *** is the first report aiming to provide a comprehensive and critical review of state-of-the-art gutter layer materials and their design and modification to enable TFC membranes with superior separation *** first elucidate the importance of the gutter layer on membrane performance through modeling and experimental *** various gutter layer materials used to obtain high-performance composite membranes are critically reviewed,and the strategies to improve their compatibility with the selective layer are highlighted,such as oxygen plasma treatment,polydopamine deposition,and surface ***,we present the opportunities of the gutter layer design for practical applications.

Nanofiltration has been attracting great attention in alleviating the global water crisis because of its high efficiency,mild operation,and strong *** decades,it remains a challenge to break the upper limit of performance and establish the formation-structureproperty relationship for nanofiltration *** feature article summarizes our recent progress in the preparation of high-performance thin-film composite(TFC)nanofiltration membranes,focusing on the mussel-inspired deposition method and the optimized interfacial polymerization(IP).By accelerating the oxidation of polydopamine and equilibrating the rate of aggregation and deposition processes,the mussel-inspired deposition method realizes the rapid and uniform formation of selective coatings or *** deposition systems endow the selective layer with rich chemical structures and easy post-functionalization,highlighting its potential in water *** for optimizing the conventional IP,the rapid polycondensation of amine and acid chloride groups is slowed down to enable the controllability of IP at the water-organic *** homogeneity and integrity of the TFC membranes are improved by constructing a uniform reaction platform and introducing a viscous medium to control the amine diffusion,which facilitates the water permeability and promotes the separation *** have proposed a series of practical strategies for improving TFC membranes and might provide more inspiration for other nanofiltration techniques.
