Background Tungiasis is a neglected tropical skin disease caused by the sand flea Tunga penetrans.Female fleas penetrate the skin,particularly at the feet,and cause severe inflammation.This study aimed to characterize disease burden in two highly affected regions in Kenya,to test the use of Thermography to detect tungiasis-associated inflammation and to create a new two-level classification of disease severity suitable for mapping,targeting,and monitoring interventions.Methods From February 2020 to April 2021,3532 pupils age 8–14 years were quasi-randomly selected in 35 public primary schools and examined for tungiasis and associated symptoms.Of the infected pupils,266 were quasi-randomly selected and their households visited,where an additional 1138 family members were examined.Inflammation was assessed using infra-red Thermography.A Clinical score was created combining the number of locations on the feet with acute and chronic symptoms and infra-red hotspots.Results The overall prevalence of tungiasis among all the school pupils who were randomly selected during survey rounds 1 and 3 was 9.3%[95%confidence interval(CI):8.4–10.3].Based on mixed effects logistic models,the odds of infection with tungiasis among school pupils was three times higher in Kwale(coastal Kenya)than in Siaya[western Kenya;adjusted odds ratio(aOR)=0.36,95%CI:0.18–0.74];three times higher in males than in females(aOR=3.0,95%CI:2.32–3.91)and three times lower among pupils sleeping in a house with a concrete floor(aOR=0.32,95%CI:0.24–0.44).The odds of finding an infected person among the household population during surveys before the COVID-19 pandemic was a third(aOR=0.32,95%CI:0.19–0.53)of that when schools were closed due to COVID-19 restrictions and approximately half(aOR=0.44,95%CI:0.29–0.68)in surveys done after school re-opening(round 3).Infection intensity was positively correlated with inflammation as measured by Thermography(Spearman’s rho=0.68,P<0.001)and with the clinical score(rho=0.86,P<0.001).Based on the two-level classificati

Progress on the ultrasonic testing and laser Thermography techniques for NDT of tokamak plasma-facing components

During manufacturing and operation, different kinds of defects, e.g., delamination or surface cracks, may be generated in the plasma-facing components (PFCs) of a Tokamak device. To ensure the safety of the PFCs, various kinds of nondestructive testing (NDT) techniques are needed for different defect and failure mode. This paper gives a review of the recently developed ultrasonic testing (UT) and laser Thermography methods for inspection of the delamination and surface cracks in PFCs. For monoblock W/Cu PFCs of divertor, the bonding quality at both W-Cu and Cu- CuCrZr interfaces was qualified by using UT with a focus probe during manufacturing. A noncontact, coupling-free and flexible ultrasonic scanning testing system with use of an electromagnetic acoustic transducer and a robotic inspection manipulator was introduced then for the in-vessel inspection of delamination defect in first wall (FW). A laser infrared Thermography testing method is highlighted for the on-line inspection of delamination defect in FW through the vacuum vessel window of the Tokamak reactor. Finally, a new laser spot Thermography method using laser spot array source was described for the online inspection of the surface cracks in FW.

Antiobesity and antihyperlipidemic effect of Ixora coccinea on Triton X-100 induced hyperlipidemia in rats: An approach to evaluate asymmetrical temperature distribution analysis using Thermography

Objective: Obesity and hyperlipidemia is the major cause of many pathological diseases with an increase side effects using allopathic drugs. The present study focuses on the effect of Ixora coccinea on Triton X-100 induced hyperlipidemia in rats and associated complications.Methodology: In vitro radical scavenging activity of I. coccinea was assessed using DPPH, FRAP and hydrogen peroxide. In vivo antiobesity and antihyperlipidimic activity of I. coccinea was tested in Triton X-100 induced hyperlipidemic rats and assessed for its biochemical parameters in blood and tissue samples.The relationship between physiological responses and regulation of body temperature was investigated by using animal surface temperature images captured with infrared camera.Results: The results of mineral analysis, antioxidant, total flavonoid and phenolic content represented high amount of mineral and had the potential to scavenge free radicals tested with DPPH, FRAP and hydrogen peroxide radicals with dose dependent activity. The highest activity was observed in aqueous extract, DPPH with 71.5% inhibition, FRAP with 56.8%, H2 O2 with 33% activity at 100 μg/mL concentration.Triton X-100 induced hyperlipidemic rats when treated with I. coccinea aqueous extract showed significant activity by regulating the biochemical parameters and maintaining the lipid profile by decreasing TC,LDL-C, VLDL-C, TG and improving HDL-C levels. Similarly, the elevated levels of creatinine, urea, uric acid,AST, ALT, ALP due to induction of hyperlipidemia, were brought back to near normal levels after treatment with I. coccinea. The levels of tissue anti-oxidants enzymes like SOD and CAT were also found to be improved in treated I. coccinea groups. The whole body asymmetrical temperature distribution analysis showed that significant decreases in temperature was observed in obesity induced groups but a gradual increase in temperature(2%–5%) was observed after treatment.Conclusion: Thus, the results indicated that I. coccinea can be a drug of choice to decrease

Detection of small delamination in mullite/Si/SiC model EBC system by pulse Thermography

The pulse Thermography(PT) technique was applied to the detection of the delamination of a multi-layered coating system composed of mullite/Si onto a reaction-bonded Si C substrate. The potential evaluation was carried out in order to detect internal delamination in multi-layered material system. Moreover, the observation of the cross sections and 3D views obtained by X-ray computed tomography(CT) indicated that the delamination occurred at the interface between the top coat and the bond coat layers. The changes in the temperature distribution obtained by PT indicated the existence of a delamination area in the top coat layer of the mullite. In particular, the lower temperature region corresponded to the delamination area. The experimental results confirmed that the PT technique is effective with respect to the internal delamination of multi-layered coating system.

Inspection Detectability Improvement for Metal Defects Detected by Pulsed Infrared Thermography

Aiming at the drawbacks of low contrast and high noise in the thermal images, a novel method based on the combination of the thermal image sequence reconstruction and the first-order differential processing is proposed in this work, which is comprised of the following procedures. Firstly, the specimen with four fabricated defects with different sizes is detected by using pulsed infrared thennography. Then, a piecewise fitting based method is proposed to reconstruct the thermal image sequence to compress the data and remove the temporal noise of each pixel in the thermal image. Finally, the first-order differential processing based method is proposed to enhance the contrast. An experimental investigation into the specimen containing de-bond defects between the steel and the heat insulation layer is carried out to validate the effectiveness of the proposed method via the above procedures. The obtained results show that the proposed method can remove the noise, enhance the contrast, and even compress the data reaching at 99.1%, thus improving the detectability of pulsed infrared Thermography on metal defects.

In this paper,the non-contact measurement of temperature and deformation simultaneously is studied for pulsed eddy current Thermography.Pulsed eddy current Thermography is a non-destructive testing technique for surface and near surface defects detection through temperature variation.The digital image correlation（DIC）by binocular vision is used to deformation detection accompanied temperature variation in a thin specimen with a crack.The research is meaningful to study the relationship between the temperature and the deformation.

The Use of Liquid Crystal Thermography in Selected Technical and Medical Applications—Recent Development

Thermochromic liquid crystals (TLC) and true-colour digital image processing have been successfully used in non-intrusive technical, industrial and biomedical studies and applications. Thin coatings of TLC at surfaces are utilized to obtain detailed temperature distributions and heat transfer rates for steady or transient processes. Liquid crystals also can be used to make the temperature and velocity fields in liquids visible by the simple expedient of directly mixing the liquid crystal material into the liquid (water, glycerol, glycol, and silicone oils) in very small quantities to use as thermal and hydrodynamic tracers. In biomedical situations, e.g., skin diseases, breast cancer, blood circulation and other medical application, TLC and image processing are successfully used as an additional non-invasive diagnostic method especially useful for screening large groups of potential patients. The history of this technique is reviewed, principal methods and tools are described and some examples are presented. Also steady-state and transient liquid crystal Thermography (LCT) is used to measure local heat transfer on a plate equipped with transverse vortex generators. Automated evaluation allows determining the heat transfer coefficient without arbitrary influence of human interpretation.

Infrared Thermography for True Temperature Measurement of the Main Board in Personal Computer

This paper presents a way to measure the true temperature of the electronic devices without disturbing their normal operating conditions, which involved with estimating target emissivity, background temperature correctly and choosing infrared transparent material and its transmission estimation. The temperature distributions of the main board in personal computer were measured by the method presented here with infrared Thermography in several different running conditions. The measurement errors and their possible remedies are also discussed.

Dynamic infrared Thermography and smartphone thermal imaging as an adjunct for preoperative, intraoperative, and postoperative perforator free flap monitoring

Aim:The versatile application of perforator free flaps for coverage of any extremity has been well proven.Often,a"freestyle"-like approach is used to design these flaps,as conventional imaging techniques for perforator identification may be too expensive or unavailable.As will be demonstrated,the recent application of a thermal imaging camera using a smartphone is a cheaper and therefore more universal means to better identify the requisite perforators upon which a free flap can be designed and then monitored.Methods:Smartphone Thermography can be used on any patient preoperatively to identify preferable perforators or vascular network"hot spots"within the desired donor site territory.Intraoperative management of the choice of perforators and subsequent flap dissection can be similarly facilitated.Intermittent postoperative monitoring based on changes of the thermal image color palette will provide a comparison that can be used to determine if perfusion across the microanastomosis is sustained.Results:An overview of how to use a smartphone in concert with a thermal imaging camera is outlined.Dynamic infrared Thermography represents a thermal stress necessary with a smartphone to better identify donor site"hot spots".Conclusion:Smartphone Thermography is an inexpensive and expeditious means for identification of"hot spots"that correlate with perforators that would suffice to insure perfusion to a free perforator flap.However,since perforator caliber and course cannot be determined,this should be considered to be only a complementary adjunct for conventional methods.Nevertheless,its simplicity will overall improve the safer design,harvest,and subsequent monitoring of free flaps.

Numerical Simulation of Defect Inspection Using Electromagnetically Stimulated Thermography

The feasibility of electromagnetically stimulated Thermography non-destructive testing(NDT)for the detection of defects in metallic conductive materials has been carried out by finite element analysis.Aluminum plates with defects of different diameters,depths,locations,shapes and orientation with respect to eddy current are numerically investigated.ANSYS software is used to solve the coupled electromagnetic and temperature field equations.The peak temperatures on the top surface of circular defects with different diameters and depths are calculated at varying excitation frequencies.It is demonstrated that the obtained temperature inreases with increase of the defect diameter and decrease of its depth.The dependence of the temperature over the top surface of the defect on its location and orientation is also presented.The results indicate that we can detect the subsurface defect and estimate its depth and location by choosing a suitable coil-specimen configuration.
