This study focuses on the thermo-mechanical properties of Carbon Fibre/Polyimide Composite(CFPC)attaching collars under transient heating.The CFPC attaching collars were fabricated by a high-temperature resin transfer moulding process,and their thermo-mechanical properties under the conditions of simultaneous transient heating and bending load were investigated.The results show that the attaching collar tends to fail at 118% of the limit load.The failure mode includes the fracture of the connecting screws,local extrusion damage of the hole edges,and slight ablation damage at the outer plies.And there is no observable residual deformation in the composite attaching collar.Furthermore,considering that the material properties vary with temperature,a progressive damage model based on the sequential thermo-mechanical coupling method was established to study the failure mechanism of the attaching collar.Finally,the damage factor of the CFPC was calculated to assess the safety status of the attaching collar.The results show that the primary damage modes of the composite attaching collar are intralaminar failure,which mainly occurs at the heat insulation layer and the hole edges,and these slightly affect the structural bearing capacity.A good correlation between the experiment and FEA is obtained.The test methods and analysis models proposed contribute to the safety assessment of composite structures under transient heating.

Although nanocomposites have recently attracted special interest in the tissue engineering area,due to their potential to reinforce scaffolds for hard tissues applications,a number of variables must be set prior to any clinical application.This manuscript addresses the evaluation of thermo-mechanical properties and of cell proliferation of cellulose nanocrystals(CNC),poly(butylene adipate-co-terephthalate)(PBAT),poly(ε-caprolactone)(PCL)films and their bionanocomposites with 2 wt% of CNC obtained by casting technique.Cellulose nanocrystals extracted from Balsa wood by acid hydrolysis were used as a reinforcing phase in PBAT and PCL matrix films.The films and pure CNC at different concentrations were cultured with osteoblasts MG-63 and the cell proliferation was assessed by AlamarBlue?assay.The thermal-mechanical properties of the films were evaluated by dynamic-mechanical thermal analysis(DMTA).It was found by DMTA that the CNC acted as reinforcing agent.The addition of CNCs in the PBAT and PCL matrices induced higher storage moduli due to the reinforcement effects of CNCs.The cell viability results showed that neat CNC favored osteoblast proliferation and both PBAT and PCL films incorporated with CNC were biocompatible and supported cell proliferation along time.The nature of the polymeric matrix or the presence of CNC practically did not affect the cell proliferation,confirming they have no in vitro toxicity.Such features make cellulose nanocrystals a suitable candidate for the reinforcement of biodegradable scaffolds for tissue engineering and biomedical applications.

Influence of potato flour on dough rheological properties and quality of steamed bread

It is a novel idea to make steamed bread by adding potato flour into wheat flour considering the production and nutritional factors of potato. In this study, the influence of potato flour（0–35%） on dough rheology and quality of steamed bread were investigated. Potato flour addition significantly influenced the dough rheological properties and steamed bread quality, such as increased water absorption, the maximum gaseous release height, total volume of CO_2 and hardness, while decreased dough stability and specific volume of steamed bread. Moreover, correlation analysis suggested that dough height at the maximum development time, dough stability, water absorption and the phase tangent can be used for predicting the technological quality of steamed bread. Potato-wheat steamed bread had higher dietary fibre, ash content and antioxidant activity than those of wheat steamed bread. The estimated glycemic index decreased from 73.63（0%） to 60.01（35%）. Considering the sensory evaluation, the steamed bread with 20% potato flour is acceptable. In conclusion, adding appropriate quantity of potato flour to wheat flour for steamed bread production will not only maintain the technological quality, but also can improve the nutritional value of the steamed bread.

Living in a habitat with comfort is requested by all. Cinder block bricks have poor thermal properties, leading people to use fan heaters and air conditioners to regain comfort. To overcome this problem of thermal discomfort in buildings, we used lightweight concrete such as foamed concrete which is a material that has improved thermal properties for thermal comfort. In addition, this material was compared with local materials used for the construction of buildings such as BTC, adobe and BLT mixed with binders. The results showed that foamed concrete is a material that has good thermal and mechanical properties compared to local materials mixed with binders. The foamed concrete having acceptable thermo-mechanical properties was that having a density of 930 kg/m3. It has a thermal resistance of 0.4 m2·K/W for a thickness of 20 cm. For sunshine on a daily cycle equal to 12 hours, the characteristic thickness achieved by this material is 7.29 cm. It also has a shallow depth of heat diffusion having a lower thickness than other materials. This shows that foamed concrete is a promising material for the construction of buildings.

The aim of the present study was to develop sugar palm fiber(SPF)reinforced thermoplastic polyurethane(TPU)composites and to investigate the effects of fiber surface modification by 2%silane treatment and fiber loading(0,10,20,30,40 and 50 wt%)on the mechanical and thermal properties of the obtained composites.Surface treatment was employed to improve the fiber-matrix interface,which was expected to boost the mechanical strength of the composites,in terms of tensile,flexural and impact properties.Thermal properties were also investigated by thermal gravimetric analysis(TGA)and dynamic mechanical analysis(DMA)to assess the thermal stability of the developed composites.Furthermore,scanning electron microscopy(SEM)was used to study the tensile fracture samples of composites with a view towards evaluating the effects of fiber surface treatments on the fiber/matrix interfacial bonding.The findings of this study reveal that the silane treatment has determined good bonding and linkage of the cellulose fiber to the TPU matrix,hence contributing to enhanced mechanical and thermal properties of the composites.The composite formulation with 40 wt%sugar palm fiber loading showed optimum values such as 17.22 MPa for tensile,13.96 MPa for flexural,and 15.47 kJ/m^2 for impact strength.Moreover,the formulations with higher fiber content exhibited satisfactory values of storage modulus and thermal degradation,while their good interfacial adhesion was evidenced by SEM images.

Polyethylene glycol functionalized carbon nanotubes/gelatin-chitosan nanocomposite: An approach for significant drug release

This research work blooms the new idea of developing a safe and controlled drug releasing matrix using multi-walled carbon nanotubes(MWCNTs).In aqueous solution,uniform and highly stable dispersion of MWCNTs was obtained after secondary functionalization with polyethylene glycol(PEG)which was studied by Fourier transmission infrared spectroscopy(FTIR)and thermogravimetric analysis(TGA).Solution casting method was used to prepare MWCNTs/gelatin-chitosan nanocomposite films and the effect of MWCNTs on physico-mechanical,thermal and water uptake properties of the nanocomposites were evaluated.Incorporation of MWCNTs into the porous gelatin-chitosan matrix showed interesting stiffness and dampness along with developed microfibrillar structures within the pore walls intended at being used in tissue engineering of bone or cartilage.A common antibiotic drug,ciprofloxacin was incorporated into nanocomposite matrix.The evaluation of the effect of MWCNTs on drug release rate by dissolution test and antimicrobial susceptibility test was performed.Sharp release of the drug was found at early stages(~1 h),but the rate was reduced afterwards,showing a sustained release.It was observed that for all microorganisms,the antibacterial activities of drug loaded MWCNTs/gelatin-chitosan nanocomposites were higher than that of drug loaded gelatin-chitosan composite films containing no MWCNTs.Comparative statistical studies by ANOVA techniques also showed remarkable difference between the antibacterial activities,exhibited by MWCNTs-incorporated and non-incorporated composite films.

Influence of Pyrocarbon Matrix Concentration on Thermal Physical and mechanical properties of Pitch-based Carbon/carbon Composites

The effect of pyrocarbon(PyC) concentration on the thermal physical and mechanical properties of quasi 3dimensional carbon fiber fabrics reinforced pitch-based carbon matrix composites was investigated.As the PyC concen-tration increased from 0 to 22.9vol.%,the tensile strength of pitch-based C/C(Carbon/Carbon) composites initially in-creased and then decreased,so was the tensile modulus.The coefficients of thermal expansion(CTE) were in the sequence of 10.2vol.%thermo- mechanical properties,the major concerns for the safety design of load-bearing structural parts,can be tailored,which increase the reliability of pitch-based C/C composites as a structure unit.
