Considering the percentage of dissatisfied due to local thermal sensation(PD LTSV),a vertical air temperature difference(ΔT_(d))threshold of about 3°C was recommended in ***,some novel air distribution methods might create large positive(which means the head warmer than the feet,vice versa)or negativeΔT_(d),with no suitable proved criteria to be *** this study,sixteen subjects were seated in a climatic box placed in a climate chamber to evaluate thermal sensation and percentage of dissatisfied with negative and positiveΔT_(d) in different whole-body thermal *** temperatures were controlled independently at the upper and lower body parts,with 13 different air temperature sets combined with 22°C,25°C,28°C,and 31°C(i.e.-9°C≤ΔT_(d)≤9°C).Results showed that subjects were more thermally sensitive at the upper body and with positiveΔT_(d) than at the lower body or with negativeΔT_(d).The 80%acceptableΔT_(d) range is about-8 to 7°C in overall neutral(TSV=0),-7°C to 6°C in slightly cool(TSV=-0.5)conditions,which is wider than-3 to 3°C in slightly warm conditions(TSV=+0.5).By considering the factors of both TSV andΔT_(d),a new overall percentage of dissatisfied index(OPD P)was *** studies show that the new OPD P index is more precise and suitable for the evaluations of different air distributions to predict overall percentage of dissatisfied in thermal environments with vertical air temperature difference.

Application-driven development of a thermal imaging-based cabin occupant thermal sensation assessment model and its validation

Parametric study on the sleep thermal environment

Sleep thermal environment has a great effect on occupants7 sleep *** purpose of this study was to explore the relationships between sleep thermal environment parameters and sleep quality in winter and *** whole experiments involved indoor ambient temperatures(winter:17℃,20℃,23℃;summer:23℃,26℃,29℃)and relative humidity(RH;winter:40%,55%,70%;summer:40%,60%,80%).A total of 18 young subjects(23±2 years old)were divided into the two different season groups to experience the corresponding environmental *** subjective environmental perception and objective physiological signals were *** results showed that thermal sensations at 20℃in winter,as well as 26℃in summer,were considered as the thermal neutral *** sensation in winter before sleep was susceptible to SET*,while the middle value of SET*(32℃)related to the middle indoor air temperature(26℃)and air humidity(60%)before and after sleep could be the summer combination of neutral thermal ***,cold and wet environment in winter was found to seriously affect the deep *** summer,mild temperature contributing to good sleep quality might weaken the effect of humidity on *** combining the sleep environmental perception result with contour line and regression analysis on objective sleep quality,the suggested values of thermal environment parameters for young adults(21-25 years old)were as follows:20.3℃and 56%RH in winter,as well as 26.1℃and 52%RH in summer.

Individual thermal comfort models based on physiological parameters could improve the efficiency of the personal thermal comfort control ***,the effect of thermal history has not been fully addressed in these *** this study,climate chamber experiments were conducted in winter using 32 subjects who have different indoor and outdoor thermal *** kinds of thermal conditions were investigated:the temperature dropping(24-16℃)and severe cold(12℃)conditions.A simplified method using historical air temperature to quantify the thermal history was proposed and used to predict thermal comfort and thermal demand from physical or physiological *** show the accuracies of individual thermal sensation prediction was low to about 30%by using the PMV index in cold environments of this *** on the sensitivity and reliability of physiological responses,five local skin temperatures(at hand,calf,head,arm and thigh)and the heart rate are optimal input parameters for the individual thermal comfort *** the proposed historical air temperature as an additional input,the general accuracies using classification tree model C5.0 were increased up by 15.5%for thermal comfort prediction and up by 29.8%for thermal demand ***,when predicting thermal demands in winter,the factor of thermal history should be considered.

Impact of cold indoor thermal environmental conditions on human thermal response

To explore the thermal responses under the non-thermal equilibrium cold environmental conditions,a laboratory study was conducted in climate *** local skin temperatures and thermal sensation of 20 subjects were recorded at 10 min intervals for 90 min under air temperatures of 7.4,9.1,11 and 15 °*** results show that both local skin temperatures and mean skin temperature decrease not only with the drop of ambient air temperature but also with the exposure *** thermal sensation and overall the thermal sensation have the similar temperature-varying and time-varying *** mean vote(PMV) model cannot correctly predict the thermal sensation under non-thermal equilibrium cold *** correlation between local thermal sensation and local skin temperatures shows that thermal sensation is closely related to skin *** temperature is an effective indicator of thermal sensation.A linear relationship model between overall thermal sensation and mean skin temperature,considering both ambient temperature and exposure time,was established in the non-thermal equilibrium cold environment,which makes the evaluation of thermal sensation more objective.

The thermal comfort of frail people has to be considered carefully,mainly because of the high thermal sensitivity of this population and the negative influences that unsatisfactory thermal conditions have on their *** existing thermal comfort works have been conducted under steady-state,uniform thermal environments,with far fewer being performed in dynamic and non-uniform thermal environments,and even less for frail *** study aimed at assessing the thermal responses of frail people under transient and non-uniform thermal environments,using a thermal manikin and a climatic test *** responses were investigated and discussed in both *** analysis of variance showed a significant difference in thermal comfort and thermal sensation between females and males over time,under hot *** cold exposure,results showed a significant difference in thermal sensation between females and males over time,but no significant difference was observed in term of thermal *** revealed also significant differences in the dynamic thermal sensation between the sexes under cold exposure,while results confirmed that there is no significant difference in the dynamic thermal sensation between sexes under hot exposure.

Impact of Varying Blower Opening Degrees on Indoor Environment and thermal Comfort

At present,air handling units are usually used indoors to improve the indoor environment ***,while introducing fresh air to improve air quality,air velocity has a certain impact on the occupants’thermal ***,it is necessary to explore the optimization of air-fluid-body interaction *** this study,the indoor air flow was changed by changing the opening and closing degree of the blower,and the thermal manikin is introduced to objectively evaluate the human thermal comfort under different air *** main experimental results show that the air change rate increases with the increase of the opening and closing degree of the blower considering an ACH(air changes per hour)range between 3.8 and *** a better prediction,a linear correlation with a coefficient of 0.995 is *** the blower’s opening is adjusted to 20%,25%,30%,35%,and 40%,the air velocity sensor positioned directly beneath the air inlet records average velocities of 0.19,0.20,0.21,0.28,and 0.34 m/s over four hours,*** on thermal comfort and the average sensation experienced by individuals indicate an initial increase followed by a decline when the blower’s operation begins,with optimal conditions achieved at a 35%*** findings offer valuable insights for future indoor air ventilation and heat transfer design strategies.

Outdoor thermal comfort: Analyzing the impact of urban configurations on the thermal performance of street canyons in the humid subtropical climate of Sydney

The quality of outdoor space is becoming increasingly important with the growing rate of ***,acoustic,and thermal balance degradation are all negative impacts associated with outdoor comfort in dense urban *** morphology thus needs assessment and optimization to ensure favorable outdoor thermal comfort(OTC).This study aims to evaluate the thermal performance of streets in residential zones of Liverpool,NSW,Australia,and tries to improve their comfort index(Physiological Equivalent Temperature)to reveal optimum urban *** evaluation is done by investigating the following urban design factors affecting OTC using computational simulation techniques:street orientation,aspect ratio,building typology,and surface *** findings reveal that street canyon orientation is the most influential factor(46.42%),followed by aspect ratio(30.59%).Among the influential meteorological parameters(air temperature,wind speed,humidity and solar radiation),wind velocity had the most significant impact on the thermal comfort of the outdoor spaces in this coastal region,which typically experiences intense *** results of our analysis can be utilized by multiple stakeholders,allowing them to understand and extract the most vital design factors which contextually influence the thermal comfort of outdoor *** thermal comfort has a direct effect on the health and wellbeing of occupants of outdoor spaces.

Effect of perceived control on human thermal comfort in heated environments

To study the effects of perceived control on human thermal sensation and thermal comfort in heated environments,a psychological experiment was *** total,24 subjects participated in an *** experiment consisted of two cases in which the indoor temperature was set at 18℃ with different cold radiation *** experiment lasted for 120 min and was divided into three phases,adaptation,without perceived control and perceived *** the second phase,the subjects were told in advance that the indoor temperature could not be *** the third phase,subjects were told that they could adjust the indoor temperature to meet their own thermal expectations,but the indoor temperature could not actually be *** results showed that the effect of perceived control on thermal sensation was related to the thermal *** people with strong expectations for a neutral environment,perceived control improved their thermal sensation by satisfying their thermal *** people with low thermal expectations,perceived control reduced their thermal tolerance to the environment,eventually leading to thermal *** new findings provide more supports for the importance of psychological effects and a reference for the personal control of heating temperatures.

Experimental study on the effects of climatic characteristics on people's adaptability to thermal environment

In order to find out how the climatic characteristics affect people＇s adaptability to thermal environments,experimental studies in a climate chamber are conducted on the effects of transition seasons（from spring to summer）and the occupants＇ native areas on indoor thermal *** reveal that people＇s tolerances to cool and warm indoor environments are different in the transition *** the outdoor temperature is higher,the occupants have a weaker tolerance to a cool indoor environment,but a stronger tolerance to a warm indoor ***,it is found that the occupants＇ thermal sensations depend on both the climatic characteristics of the season and their native *** people from southern China present a greater tolerance to both warm and cool indoor environments than those from northern *** reason can be explained according to the occupants＇ adaptability to the climatic characteristics and the indoor thermal environments of their native areas in different climate zones.
