Effects of temperature acclimation on body mass and energy budget in the Chinese bulbul Pycnonotus sinensis

Chinese bulbuls （Pycnonotus sinensis） are small passerine birds that inhabit areas of central, southern and eastern China. Previous observations suggest that flee-living individuals of this species may change their food intake in response to seasonal changes in ambient temperature. In the present study, we randomly assigned Chinese bulbuls to either a 30 ~C or 10 ~C group, and measured their body mass （BM）, body temperature, gross energy intake （GEl）, digestible energy intake （DEI）, and the length and mass of their digestive tracts over 28 days of acclimation at these temperatures. As predicted, birds in the 30 ℃ group had lower body mass, GEI and DEI relative to those in the 10 ℃ group. The length and mass of the digestive tract was also lower in the 30 ℃ group and trends in these parameters were positively correlated with BM, GEl and DEI. These results suggest that Chinese bulbuls reduced their absolute energy demands at relatively high temperatures by decreasing their body mass, GEI and DEI, and digestive tract size.

Measuring an organism’s response to a changing environment can yield insight into the adaptive value of phenotypic ***,it is not clear how an organism’s capacity for the seasonal acclimatization translates to the temperature acclimation that these organisms must *** elucidate this relationship,we measured basal metabolic rate(BMR),evaporative water loss(EWL) and organ mass in both field acclimatized and laboratory acclimated adult Chinese bulbuls(Pycnonotus sinensis).Measurements in field acclimatized birds were taken during the winter and summer seasons;in the laboratory acclimated birds,we took our measurements following 4 weeks at either 10 or 30℃.Metabolic rates were measured with an open-circuit respirometry system(AEI technologies S-3A/I,USA),the water content of air was determined before and after the experiment.A ’U’ tube(containing silica gel) was connected in series after the respiratory chamber and was *** measurements,the animals were killed by decapitation and we dissected out their liver,heart,kidneys,and small *** organs were dried to constant mass for 2 days at 75℃and weighed to 0.1 *** and cold-acclimated bulbuls demonstrated significantly higher BMR and EWL than their summer and warm-acclimated *** and cold-acclimated birds also had higher liver,heart, small intestine and kidneys,the variability in BMR can be explained partly by adjustments in organ *** findings suggest that Chinese bulbuls can exhibit seasonal acclimatization and temperature acclimation of physiological traits and use this capacity to cope with fluctuations in environmental *** data test the hypothesis that physiological flexibility in energetic traits is a common feature of avian metabolism.

In the present study,juvenile rainbow trout(Oncorhynchus mykiss)were acclimated at 5 *** in the control group(C0)were reared at a constant temperature(16℃);trout in four other treatments(A0,A3,A6,and A9)were acclimated to a high temperature(22℃)for 0,3,6,and 9 d,respectively,and then returned to normal temperature(16℃)for *** temperature was then raised to 20℃and the fish were cultured for 40 *** results showed that the growth rates of A3,A6,and A9 were higher than that of A0 but lower than that of *** growth rate of A9 was the highest among the 4 acclimation *** activities of serum transaminase and liver antioxidant enzyme significantly increased during *** the beginning of growth,the activities of enzymes were lower in A3,A6,and A9 with the lowest in *** addition,the transcript abundance of heat shock protein(HSP)60 gene in A9 was not significantly different from that of C0 during ***70 in A9 significantly increased at the beginning and returned to that of C0 at the *** findings indicated that pre-acclimation improved the high temperature tolerance with the best effectiveness observed at 22℃for 9 d.A possible mechanism underlining such phenomenon is the improvement of antioxidant defense system.
