Morphological characteristics in the area off eastern Taiwan Island and their tectonic implications

On the basis of bathymetric data and other geological and geophysical data obtained during the first survey conducted by Chinese Mainland in the area off eastern Taiwan Island from May to June in 2000, the morphological features of the region, the tectonic control to the seafloor topography and their tectonic implication are studied and discussed. The results have revealed that both the slope zone of the Ryukyu arc and the Ryukyu Trench present a typical morphotectonic characteristics controlled by the trench-arc system in the West Pacific Ocean. At the slope of eastern Taiwan Island the isobathic lines parallel to the coastline and distribute densely in nearly N-S direction and the slope gradient of topography is large. Such a unique feature is attributed to the collision of the Luzon arc and Eurasia continent. In the Huatung Basin, turbidity fans and submarine canyons are well developed, the formations of which are mainly related to the steep topography of the slope of the Luzon arc and the abundant supply of sediments. These submarine canyons are controlled by basement highs and strike-slip faults. On eastern side and western side of the Gagua Ridge, both the water depth and morphological features are different, but the basement of Gagua Ridge belongs to the Huatung Basin. The eastern side of the Gagua Ridge (123°12′E) corresponds to the boundary of two plates with different ages. In the West Philippine Basin, linear ridges and troughs in a NW trending are identified, which are dissected by a NE trending transform fault. According to the seafloor topography features, the direction of the transform fault and the magnetic anomaly lineations, the seafloor of this region was formed during 60-45 Ma B. P. when the West Philippine Basin was spreading along NE-SW relative to the present orientation.

Studies on the Blueschist Belt in the Shuanghu Region, Central Northern Tibet and Its tectonic implications

The blueschist blocks extend intermittently more than 300 km, from the eastern Qagelela town, 13 km west of Shuanghu, Xiyaergang, central northern Tibet, through Naro, Jiaomuri, Gangtang Co, Guoganjianian Shan to western Gangmar Co-Lungmu Co. Most of the blueschist blocks are newly discovered by Li Cai et al. in recent years, which are associated with ophiolite melange and olistostromes, except those of Qagelela and Guoganjianian *** protoliths of the blueschist are mainly of the Late Carboniferous sedimentary-volcanic rock series,belong to the products of the margin of the Gondwana land, including basic volcanic rock, argillaceous sandstone,sandy-argillaceous limestone etc., and a few basic *** H.P/T minerals mainly consist of crossite, next magnesio-riebeckite and minor *** mineral assemblages are as follows: (1) Epidote + chlorite + crossite + albite; (2) Sericite + chlorite +magnesio-riebeckite (+winchite) + feldspar + quartz; (3) Calcite + crossite + epidote; (4) Chlorite + actinolite +winchite (±clinopyroxene).Estimated metamorphic pressure of the blueschist varies from 0.62～0.75 GPa and metamorphic temperature from 410～460℃, corresponding to the transitional facies between blueschist and *** 40Ar/39Ar isotope dating of crossite is 222.5±3.7 Ma, showing the metamorphic age ranging from the Late Paleozoic to Early *** high pressure metamorphic zone associated with ophiolitic melange being distributed along Lungmu Co-Gangmar Co-Guoganjianian Shan- Shuanghu-Lancang River may be as a tectonic symbol of the subduction of an "initial limited oceanic basin" at the northern side of the Gondwana land, which is taken as a boundary between the Gondwana- and the Eurasian land.

Detrital Zircon U-Pb Geochronology of the Xilin Group: Constraints for the Early Paleozoic tectonic Evolution of the Songliao Massif

The Xilin Group, composed of the Chenming, Laodaomiaogou, Qianshan and Wuxingzhen formations, is one of the Early Paleozoic terranes in the eastern Songliao Massif, mainly consisting of thick layers of fine clastic and carbonate rocks. This study presents LA-ICP-MS zircon U-Pb geochronological data for the Laodaomiaogou and Qianshan formations, further constraining their provenance and the Early Paleozoic tectonic evolution of the Songliao Massif on the eastern Central Asian Orogenic Belt. Most zircons from the Laodaomiaogou and Qianshan formations show magmatic oscillatory zoning and high Th/U ratios(0.26–2.41). Zircon U-Pb dating results indicate that the detrital zircons from the silty mudstone of the Laodaomiaogou Formation yield peak ages of 634 Ma, 775 Ma, 820 Ma, 880 Ma and 927 Ma, as well as multi-episodic Archean to Paleoproterozoic and Mesoproterozoic ages(1405–643 Ma), implying its deposition time is younger than ~634 Ma. Furthermore, the occurrence of Early Cambrian fossils indicates that the Laodaomiaogou Formation was deposited during the late stage of the Early Cambrian(~514 Ma). The zircons from the K-bentonite of the Qianshan Formation show four peak ages of 444 Ma, 471 Ma, 489 Ma and 518 Ma and the youngest age peak of 444 ± 4 Ma(n = 6) indicates that the Qianshan Formation was deposited during the Late Ordovician. In addition, the peak ages of the detrital zircons in the silty mudstone of the Qianshan Formation are 472 Ma and 498 Ma, as well as two other concordant points with;Pb/;Pb apparent ages of 1824 Ma and 1985 Ma. The dating results in this study, together with published data, indicate the absence of Pan-African magmatic events in the Songliao Massif prior to the initial deposition of the Xilin Group, in contrast to those distributed widely in the Jiamusi Massif. The Liuqu Conglomerate,situated to the south of Yarlung Tsangbo Suture Zone (YTSZ),is a suit of molasse formed in the foreland basins of the Himalayan orogenic belt after the collision between the two plates of the Indian and *** is of great significance in constraining the younger limit time of the collision of the two plates and providing stratigraphic evidence to reveal the post-collisional tectonic evolution and uplifting history of the Tibet plateau. However,the age of this molasse suit and its correlation to other synchronous strata distributed in southern Tibet have been in great disputes for a long *** in recent years,argues on its ages are growing violently with the recognition of the great sedimentary tectonic significances of this *** the field works carried out recently on this molasse suit,a lot of plant fossils were found preserved in fairly good conditions in the upper part of this strata,which is of great help in determining its *** identification,the assemblage of the plant fossils belongs to a tropic to subtropic flora developed in the southern margin of the Northern Hemisphere supercontinent during the Middle to Later Eocene,which provide good constraint on its formation *** paper is to give a brief introduction of the plant assemblage and its age,and to discuss their tectonic significances.
