Effect of tai Chi on Cardiac and Static Pulmonary Function in Older Community-Dwelling Adults at Risk of Ischemic Stroke: A Randomized Controlled Trial

Objective: To evaluate the effect of tai chi exercise on cardiac and static lung function for older community-dwelling adults at risk of ischemic stroke. Methods: A total of 170 older community-dwelling adults (aged 55–75 years old) at risk of ischemic stroke were allocated to either tai chi training group (85 cases, five 60-min sessions of tai chi training per week for 12 weeks) or control group (85 cases, usual pbysical activity for 12 weeks) using a computer-generated randomization. The echocardiographic parameters of cardiac structure, cardiac function and static lung function were measured at baseline, after 12 weeks of intervention and additional 12-week follow-up period by a blinded professional staff member using a color Doppler ultrasound imaging device or a cardiopulmonary function instrument. The t test and linear mixed model based on the intention-to-treat analysis principle was used to calculate the effect. The adverse effect was observed. Results: Most of echocardiographic parameters on the cardiac structure, cardiac function and static lung function between the tai chi group and control group did not have a significant difference either post 12-week intervention or additional 12-week follow-up period. Only three parameters involving in right ventricular diameter (P=0.024), main pulmonary artery diameter (P=0.002) and vital capacity maximum (P=0.036) were beneficial to be improved in the tai chi group compared to the control group by the analysis of mixed linear model. No adverse effects were found during the intervention period. Conclusions: The 12-week tai chi exercise did not have an obvious beneficial effect on cardiac structure, cardiac function and static lung function in older community-dwelling adults at risk of ischemic stroke.(Trial registration No. ChiCTR-TRC-13003601)

Effects of tai Ji Quan training on gait kinematics in older Chinese women with knee osteoarthritis: A randomized controlled trial

Background: Although tai Ji Quan has been shown to relieve pain and improve functional mobility in people with knee osteoarthritis(OA), little is known about its potential benefits on gait characteristics among older Chinese women who have a high prevalence of both radiographic and symptomatic knee OA. This study aims to assess the efficacy of a tailored tai Ji Quan intervention on gait kinematics for older Chinese women with knee OA.Methods: A randomized controlled trial involving 46 older women in Shanghai, China, with clinically diagnosed knee OA. Randomized(1:1)participants received either a 60 min tai Ji Quan session(n = 23) 3 times weekly or a 60 min bi-weekly educational session(n = 23) for 24 weeks.Primary outcomes were changes in gait kinematic measures from baseline to 24 weeks. Secondary outcomes included changes in scores on the Western Ontario and Mc Master University Osteoarthritis Index(WOMAC) and Short Physical Performance Battery(SPPB).Results: After 24 weeks the tai Ji Quan group demonstrated better performance in gait velocity(mean difference, 8.40 cm/s, p = 0.01), step length(mean difference, 3.52 cm, p = 0.004), initial contact angle(mean difference, 2.19°, p = 0.01), and maximal angle(mean difference, 2.61°,p = 0.003) of flexed knees during stance phase compared to the control group. In addition, the tai Ji Quan group showed significant improvement in WOMAC scores(p tailored tai Ji Quan intervention improved gait outcomes. The intervention also improved overall function as indexed by the WOMAC and SPPB. These results support the use of tai Ji Quan for older Chinese adults with knee OA to both improve their functional mobility and reduce pain symptomatology.

With the increasing number of cardiovascular patients,more and more people are living with diseases.Cardiac rehabilitation(CR)is an effective treatment and prevention measure for cardiovascular disease(CVD),which aims to relieve both psychological and physiological stress of CVD,reduce risk of death from CVD,improve cardiovascular function and patients'quality of life.tai Chi is popular in China and mainly used as a daily leisure activity for the elderly to strengthen their bodies.This review discusses whether tai Chi could be taken as a positive intervention in CR and what is the exact role and its mechanisms as exercise therapy for CVD.The authors detail the role of tai Chi on CR from the aspects of exercise capacity,risk factors of CVD and psychological factors,etc.,as well as highlight the limitation of tai Chi research at present.

Differences in the Rainfall Characteristics between Mount tai and Its Surrounding Areas

As a typical small-scale, isolated topography, Mount tai exhibits great differences in precipitation characteristics from the surrounding areas. It was found that the amount of rainfall occurring over Mount tai is significantly larger than what is observed in the surrounding areas. Based on hourly rain gauge records for the warm season(May to September) of 1996–2015, differences between Mount tai and its surrounding areas were further revealed in terms of rainfall diurnal variation, spatial scale, and evolution process. The diurnal variation of the enhancement on rainfall amount exhibit "dual peaks" occurring in the early morning and afternoon, and the dual peaks are mainly attributable to rainfall frequency. The diurnal phase of the rainfall amount in the surrounding areas lags 1 h behind that over Mount tai. Regarding differences in rainfall spatial scale, compared to those of surrounding areas, precipitation over Mount tai is characterized by a smaller coverage, especially in the early morning. Mount tai also tends to have a kind of unique, small-scale rainfall in the afternoon and at night. Based on statistical analysis of precipitation events,differences in rainfall evolution process were identified as well. Rainfall over Mount tai often starts earlier in the afternoon and ends later at night than it does in the surrounding areas. Furthermore, nocturnal rainfall events over Mount tai are prone to peaking over a shorter period and enduring for a longer period after reaching their maximum intensity, compared with nocturnal rainfall events occurring in the surrounding areas. Rainfall events over Mount tai always last longer, especially those occurring in the early morning. In general, Mount tai has a large enhancement effect on rainfall.

Accuracy assessment of four cloud-free snow cover products over the Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau

Four up-to-date daily cloud-free snow products–IMS(InteractiveMultisensor Snow products),MOD-SSM/I(combination of the MODIS andSSM/I snow products),MOD-B(Blending method basing on the MODISsnow cover products)and tai(Terra–Aqua–IMS)–with high-resolutionsover the Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau(QTP)were comprehensively assessed.Comparisons of the IMS,MOD-SSM/I,MOD-B and tai cloud-free snowproducts against meteorological stations observations over 10 snowseasons(2004–2013)over the QTP indicated overall accuracies of 76.0%,89.3%,92.0%and 92.0%,respectively.The Khat values of the IMS,MODSSM/I,MOD-B and tai products were 0.084,0.463,0.428 and 0.526,respectively.The tai products appear to have the best cloud-removalability among the four snow products over the QTP.Based on theassessment,an I-tai(Improvement of Terra–Aqua–IMS)snow productwas proposed,which can improve the accuracy to some extent.However,the algorithms of the MODIS series products show instabilitywhen identifying wet snow and snow under forest cover over the QTP.The snow misclassification is an important limitation of MODIS snowcover products and requires additional improvements.

OBJECTIVE: To determine the effects of taijiquan practice on knee proprioception in patients with knee osteoarthritis(OA).METHODS: We conducted a randomized controlled trial comparing taijiquan with a control condition(wellness education) in patients with knee OA. The patients participated in either a 60-min taijiquan session three times weekly or a 60-min weekly educational session, for 24 consecutive weeks. The primary outcomes were changes in knee proprioception. Secondary outcomes were changes in the Western Ontario and Mc Master University Osteoarthritis Index(WOMAC).RESULTS: After 24 weeks, compared with the control group, the taijiquan group demonstrated better improvements in the joint position sense in knee flexion(left:-2.12°; right:-2.02°), and knee extension(left:-2.22°; right:-1.54°). In addition,the taijiquan group showed significantly greater improvements in the WOMAC scores(P taijiquan practice resulted in a significant improvement in knee proprioception in patients with knee OA. The present findings add increasing evidence regarding the clinical benefits of taijiquan as a therapeutic modality for patients to improve the reflex protection of knee joints against potentially harmful forces.

背景:至今还没有相关研究曾比较过力量和太极训练对膝骨关节炎(OA)症状缓解的作用。本研究旨在评价为期10周的太极训练和抗阻力训练干预对改善老年OA病人症状和运动的作用。方法:31名老年病人(60-85岁)随机分为3组:10周太极组(n=12)、抗阻力训练组(n=13)和对照组(n=6)。所有参与者完成了西安大略大学和麦克马斯特大学(WOMAC)膝骨关节炎的指数功能评分,并在为期10周的干预前后进行了3项身体活动能力测试(6 min步行、计时起立行走、计时上下楼梯)。结果:力量训练组成员的计时起立行走测试成绩(p=0.001)、WOMAC疼痛分项分数(p=0.006)、WOMAC僵硬分项分数(p<0.001)、WOMAC身体机能分项分数(p=0.011)均显著提高。太极组成员的计时起立行走测试成绩显著提高(p<0.001),但WOMAC评分无显著变化。结论:力量训练能有效改善膝关节OA病人的运动和症状,太极训练仅能改善运动能力,但不能改善OA症状。
