This paper investigates traffic flow of connected and automated vehicles at lane drop on two-lane highway. We evaluate and compare performance of an optimization-based control algorithm(OCA) with that of a heuristic rules-based algorithm(HRA). In the OCA, the average speed of each vehicle is maximized. In the HRA, virtual vehicle and restriction of the command acceleration caused by the virtual vehicle are introduced. It is found that(i) capacity under the HRA(denoted as C_(H)) is smaller than capacity under the OCA;(ii) the travel delay is always smaller under the OCA, but driving is always much more comfortable under the HRA;(iii) when the inflow rate is smaller than C_(H), the HRA outperforms the OCA with respect to the fuel consumption and the monetary cost;(iv) when the inflow rate is larger than C_(H), the HRA initially performs better with respect to the fuel consumption and the monetary cost, but the OCA would become better after certain time. The spatiotemporal pattern and speed profile of traffic flow are presented, which explains the reason underlying the different performance. The study is expected to help for better understanding of the two different types of algorithm.

This paper presents a cellular automaton traffic flow model with an open boundary condition to describe the traffic flow at a roundabout crossing with an inner roundabout lane and an outer roundabout lane. The simulation results show that the boundary condition, bottlenecks and the self-organization affect the traffic flow at the roundabout crossing. Because of the effect of bottlenecks, jams easily appear on the inner roundabout lane. To improve the capacity of the roundabout system, proper values of the enter probability α and the out probability βcan be chosen.

With Connected Vehicle Technologies being popular,drivers not only perceive downstream traffic information but also get upstream information by routinely checking backward traffic conditions,and the backward-looking frequency or probability is usually affected by prevailing traffic ***,the bi-directional perception range of drivers is expected to significantly increase,which results in more informed and coordinated driving ***,we propose a traffic flow bi-directional CA model with two perception ranges,and perform the numerical simulations with the field data collected from a one-lane highway in Richmond,California,USA as the benchmark *** results show that the CA model can effectively reproduce the oscillation of relatively congested traffic and the traffic hysteresis *** adjusting the backward-looking probability and the perception range,the CA model can well simulate the travel times of all vehicles,and the generation and dissolution of traffic jams under various scenarios.

Since ramps are an important composition of traffic systems and there often exist multi ramps in a tragic system, the number of ramps can have great effects on main road traffic and produce some complex phenomena. In this paper, we employ the model presented by Tang et al. [2009 Communications in Theoretical Physics 51（1） 71] to further study the effects of the number of on-ramps on the stability of traffic flow on a ring road. The numerical results show that this model can reproduce some complex tragic phenomena resulting from multi on-ramps on the ring road and the effects of the number of on-ramps on traffic flow, but the phenomena and the effects are both related to the initial density of the main road.

On the basis of the full velocity difference （FVD） model, an improved multiple car-following （MCF） model is proposed by taking into account multiple information inputs from preceding vehicles. The linear stability condition of the model is obtained by using the linear stability theory. Through nonlinear analysis, a modified Korteweg-de Vries equation is constructed and solved. The traffic jam can thus be described by the klnk-antikink soliton solution for the mKdV equation. The improvement of this new model over the previous ones lies in the fact that it not only theoretically retains many strong points of the previous ones, but also performs more realistically than others in the dynamical evolution of congestion. Furthermore, numerical simulation of traffic dynamics shows that the proposed model can avoid the disadvantage of negative velocity that occurs at small sensitivity coefficients λ in the FVD model by adjusting the information on the multiple leading vehicles. No collision occurs and no unrealistic deceleration appears in the improved model.

In this paper, we study the effect of moving bottlenecks on traffic flow. The full velocity difference （FVD） model is extended to the traffic flow on a two-lane highway, and new lane changing rule is proposed to reproduce the vehicular lane changing behavior. Using this model, we derive the fundamental current-density diagrams for the traffic flow with the effect of moving bottleneck. Moreover, typical time-space diagram for a two-lane highway shows the formation and dissipation of a moving bottleneck. Results demonstrate that the effect of moving bottleneck enlarges with the increase of traffic density, but the effect can be reduced by increasing the maximum velocity of heavy truck. The effects of multiple moving bottlenecks under different conditions are investigated. The effect becomes more remarkable when the coupling effect of multiple moving bottlenecks occurs.

We present a high-resolution relaxation scheme for a multi-class Lighthill-Whitham-Richards (MCLWR) traffic flow model. This scheme is based on high-order reconstruction for spatial discretization and an implicit-explicit Runge-Kutta method for time integration. The resulting method retains the simplicity of the relaxation schemes. There is no need to involve Riemann solvers and characteristic decomposition. Even the computation of the eigenvalues is not required. This makes the scheme particularly well suited for the MCLWR model in which the analytical expressions of the eigenvalues are difficult to obtain for more than four classes of road users. The numerical results illustrate the effectiveness of the presented method.

Based on Xue＇s lattice model, an extended lattice model is proposed by considering the relative current information about next-nearest-neighbour sites ahead. The linear stability condition of the presented model is obtained by employing the linear stability theory. The density wave is investigated analytically with the perturbation method. The results show that the occurrence of traffic jamming transitions can be described by the kink-antikink solution of the modified Korteweg-de Vries （mKdV） equation. The simulation results are in good agreement with the analytical results, showing that the stability of traffic flow can be enhanced when the relative current of next-nearest-neighbour sites ahead is considered.

This paper proposes a new combined cellular automaton （CA） model considering the driver behavior of stochastic acceleration and delay with the velocity of the preceding vehicle and the gap between the successive vehicles based on the WWH model and the noise-first NaSch model. It introduces the delay probability varying with the gap, adds the anticipation headway and increases the acceleration with a certain probability. Through these simulations, not only can the metastable state and start-stop wave be obtained but also the synchronized flow which the wide moving jam results in. Moreover, the effect of stochastic acceleration and delay on traffic flow is discussed by analyzing the correlation of traffic data. This indicates that synchronized flow easily emerges in the critical area between free flow and synchronized flow when acceleration and delay are synchronized or their probability is close to 0.5.
