As one of the most significant critical essays of T.S.Eliot,tradition and Individual talent has defined writing as a process during which the primitive oneness has seized the individual writer of figurative descriptions to help represent itself.this theory has latter been practiced in eliot’s Wasteland,and shows its similarity with the Birth of tragedy,written by Friedrick Nietzsche,the German philosopher.eliot’s‘tradition’has been concluded by Nietzsche as‘Dionysian spirit’,which represents oneness transcending good and evil,past and present,while‘individual talent’has resembled‘Apollonian spirit’in the urge for original figuration as an apparatus.the paper aims to explain and compare the definitions of‘tradition’and‘individual talent’of eliot’s work with that of‘Dionysian spirit’and‘Apollonian spirit’in Nietzsche’s illustrations,so as to provide a deeper understanding of these two works by unveiling the individual and social sameness and difference of eliot and Nietzsche.

T.S.Eliot,a great American poet in the twentieth century,is a spokesman of the Imagist Movement.He emphasizes describing the rotten Western civilization and the decayed morals after the First World War.Prufrock that T.S.Eliot described in his early poems is timid,hesitant,sensitive,anxious,lack of will and confidence;this paper will analyze the detailed behaviors of the characters in eliot's early poems and reveal the major image of modern men more clearly.

学界对佛教思想在t.s.艾略特思想体系中的位置有着长期争论，解决这一问题的重点在于其比较宗教学观念。比较宗教学深刻地影响了艾略特的哲学学习进程，也塑造了其佛教思想的基本模式。通过对早期比较宗教学家，包括穆勒、泰勒、弗雷泽、列维-布留尔等人相关理论的吸收和反思，艾略特将佛教思想与以基督教为代表的西方传统放置于比较的框架之中，反叛以西方理性为唯一标准的“一体论”，构筑了具有先锋意义的多元文化论。佛教思想之于艾略特，并非如先前批评家们所说，仅仅具有艺术技法或某一哲学观念上的借鉴意义，而是其思想体系中极其重要的一环，成为西方传统之外的另一隐性传统。

现代诗歌语言是诗人感知体悟到的人生经验的一种隐喻表达方式。以艾略特为代表的现代诗人的诗歌语言驳杂而且充满断堑，这既是由他们所处的分崩离析的现代文化的现状决定的，也是由他们对待经验和诗歌语言的态度和观念决定的。在艾略特的诗中，语言不仅充当着传达人生经验的一种媒介，同时也是人生经验的一种体验方式，因此，创新诗歌语言就成了诗人用来拯救现代文明的途径。

T.S.Eliot's works have the didactic purpose of turning his readers away from what he considered the selfindulgence of the Romantics and toward the sterner splendors of Elizabethan drama and the 17th-century metaphysical poetry.Associated with the rise of literary modernism,he was established as the voice of a disillusioned generation by the Waste Land(1922).Especially,eliot's description of the discourse of animality received highly artistic effect on the aspect of expressing his "impersonal theory".the discourse of animality in the Waste Land in plenty,thus,it made the author's expressive force more vivid.Furthermore,various imagos of different animals drew a mythical picture of modern waste land.so that,eliot's the Waste Land also has the epic signification.

A 1942 meeting of T.S.Eliot in a BBC recording studio with George Orwell,alongside several Caribbean and British Indian writers of color,suggests a multicultural vision of high modernism that never quite happened.the exemplary modernism of eliot's the Waste Land prompted a number of imitations,extensions,and experiments,only some of which made it into subsequent literary history.this paper concerns two modernist nonhappenings,Epistle to Prometheus by Babette Deutsch and F.M.s.R.by Francis P.Ng.Epistle to Prometheus^a book-length poem combining eliotic modernist ambition and broadly left politics,was suppressed by the author almost immediately after publication for reasons that remain obscure.F.M.s.R.,a long poem in the eliot tradition addressing a train journey between singapore and Kuala Lumpur,was completely lost until recently discovered and the author(teo Poh Leng)identified.the diversity of approaches in these poems shows how,in the postwar years,modernism was retroactively unified,and how many approaches,including some taking eliot's influences in unusual directions,have been lost to history.

traditionally,there is a complete rejection of the city within poetry.Nevertheless,as urbanization sped up,cities eventually became the center of culture.In modernistcity poems,the speaker takes up the role of“flaneur”and conveys the poet’s reflections on urban life and urban people.By analyzing the characteristics and development of this image in modernist poetry,we can gain a deeper understanding of modernist poetry and urban life.

While the character,theme and modernism of t.s. eliot's poem "the Love song of J. Alfred Prufrock" have been explored variously,the language techniques in this poem have been rarely investigated. this thesis tries to analyze these symbols to find the theme of the poem. By using symbol analysis, the values and the spiritual world of the early 20th century generation can be clearly known. there are four sections in this thesis. the first section makes a brief introduction of t. s. eliot. the second section gives the basic theory about symbol and symbolism. In the third section, different symbol analyses with different details are presented by five subsections, that is, symbols of streets, symbols of body parts, symbols of ocean, symbols about time and other symbols. In the fourth section, the theme of the poem —the disillusionment of the post-war generation is analyzed.the conclusion summarizes the importance of symbolic language techniques used in the poem.
