Impact of age on transcatheter aortic valve implantation outcomes：a comparison of patients aged≤ 80 years versus patients ＆gt; 80 years

ObjectiveTo investigate the procedural outcomes and the long-term survival of patients undergoing transcatheter aortic valve implantation （TAVI） and compare study results of patients≤ 80 years and patients ＆gt; 80 years *** total of 240 patients treated with TAVI were divided into two groups according to age≤ 80 years （n = 105; 43.8%） and ＆gt; 80 years （n= 135; 56.2%）. The baseline characteristics and the pro-cedural outcomes were compared between these two groups of *** the exception of peripheral artery disease and hypercho-lesterolemia, which were more frequently observed in the older age group, baseline characteristics were comparable between groups. Complica-tion rates did not differ significantly between patients≤ 80 years and patients ＆gt; 80 years. There were no differences in 30-day mortality rates be-tween patients aged≤ 80 years and patients ＆gt; 80 years old （9.5%vs. 7.4%, respectively;P = 0.557）. After a median follow-up of 28 months （in-terquartile range： 16-42 months）, 50 （47.6%） patients aged≤ 80 years died compared to 57 （42%） deaths in the group of patients ＆gt; 80 years old （P= 0.404）.ConclusionThe results of the present single center study showed that age did not significantly impact the outcomes of TAVI.

Medusa consumption and prey selection of silver pomfret Pampus argenteus juveniles

The current study explored Aurelia aurita and Rhopilema esculent um consumption by silver pomfret juveniles, as well as their prey selection between the two jellyfi sh species. Silver pomfret juveniles weighing 1±0.1 g actively preyed on both the species. Their daily A. aurita consumption was 11.6 times their own body weights regardless of the size of A. aurita medusae. Their daily R. esculent um consumption was 13, 9.1, 5, and 4.1 times their own body weights when the R. esculentum medusae were 10, 20, 30, and 40 mm in bell diameter, respectively. The survival rates of the R. esculent um were higher than those of the A. aurita. When the R. esculent um medusae were more than 30 mm in bell diameter, their survival rate exceeded 92%. Silver pomfrets serve as a type of potential predators on A. aurita in coastal waters, and they have little infl uence on R. esculent um with a size exceeding 30 mm. Besides, A. aurita may be able to be used as fi sh prey in silver pomfret artifi cial breeding.

Experimental evaluation of fluorescent (alizarin red S and calcein) and clip-tag markers for stock assessment of ark shell, Anadara broughtonii

Release programs to enhance stocks of ark shell(Anadara broughtonii) have been undertaken in a number of Asian countries,but their effectiveness has rarely been investigated owing to a lack of marking *** quality and longevity of fluorescent markers,alizarin red S(ARS) and calcein(CAL)(200 and 300 mg/L),as well as clip tags,were tested on juvenile *** significant differences in survival or shell growth were observed in juveniles stained with either of the two fluorochromes after a 160-day culture period,but the retention rate was 100%after 1 *** marks(>grade 3) were observable microscopically in juveniles stained with the two fluorochromes,and some fluorescent marks(>grade 4) were visible with the naked eye after 1 ***-marked shells were brighter than those marked with CAL,and shells marked with 300 mg/L of the fluorochromes were easier to detect than those marked with 200 mg/*** tags were incorporated into the shell as the bivalve grew,and the retention rate was64.25%after 160 *** differences in survival(at 30 days),shell length(at 60,90,120,and 160days),and wet weight(at 90,120,and 160 days) were observed between the clip-tagged and control groups(all Psurvival rate of clams.

The synthetic thyroid hormone, levothyroxine, protects cholinergic neurons in the hippocampus of naturally aged mice

The thyroid hormones, triiodothyronine and thyroxine, play important roles in cognitive func- tion during the mammalian lifespan. However, thyroid hormones have not yet been used as a therapeutic agent for normal age-related cognitive deficits. In this study, CD-1 mice （aged 24 months） were intraperitoneally injected with levothyroxine （L-T4; 1.6 gg/kg per day） for 3 consecutive months. Our findings revealed a significant improvement in hippocampal cyto- skeletal rearrangement of actin and an increase in serum hormone levels of L-T4-treated aged mice. Furthermore, the survival rate of these mice was dramatically increased from 60% to 93.3%. The Morris water maze task indicated that L-T4 restored impaired spatial memory in aged mice. Furthermore, level of choline acetyltransferase, acetylcholine, and superoxide dismutase were in- creased in these mice, thus suggesting that a possible mechanism by which L-T4 reversed cognitive impairment was caused by increased activity of these markers. Overall, supplement of low-dosage L-T4 may be a potential therapeutic strategy for normal age-related cognitive deficits.

Outcomes of adult-to-adult living donor liver transplantation： a single center experience

Background Since January 2002, adult-to-adult living donor liver transplantation （AALDLT） has gained increasing popularity in China in response to the shortage of cadaveric donor livers. This study presents a detailed analysis of the outcomes of AALDLT in a single center. Methods A total of 70 patients underwent AALDLT at our center between January 2002 and January 2007. Among these, 67 patients received a right lobe graft without the middle hepatic vein and 3 patients received dual grafts. Three-dimensional volumetric computed tomography, magnetic resonance imaging with angiography and cholangiography were performed preoperatively. Recipient operation time, intraoperative transfusion requirement, length of intensive care unit stay, length of hospital stay, liver function tests, coagulation tests and surgical outcomes were routinely investigated throughout this study. Results All donors survived the procedure with an overall complication rate of 15.3%. Overall recipient 1-year survival and complication rates were 87.1% and 34.2%, respectively. Among the 70 cases, average graft recipient weight ratio was 0.94% （0.72%-1.43%） and average graft volume/standard liver volume ratio was 46.42% （31.74%-71.68%）. All residual liver volumes exceeded 35%. Liver function and coagulation recovered rapidly within the first 7 days after transplantation. Conclusions AALDLT is a safe procedure for the donors and an effective therapy for patients with end-stage liver disease. Patient selection and timely decision-making for transplantation are essential in achieving good outcomes. With accumulation of experience in surgery and clinical management, timely feedback and proper modification, we foresee better outcomes in the future.

Neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio in sporadic amyotrophic lateral sclerosis

The neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio(NLR)is considered a robust prognostic biomarker for predicting patient survival outcomes in many ***,it remains unclear whether it can be used as a biomarker for amyotrophic lateral sclerosis(ALS).To correlate NLR with disease progression and survival in sporadic ALS,1030 patients with ALS between January 2012 and December 2018 were included in this *** patients were assigned into three groups according to their NLR values:Group 1(NLR3,n=172[16.7%]).All patients were followed up until April *** in Group 3 had a significantly older onset age,a lower score on the Revised ALS Functional Rating Scale,and rapidly progressing disease ***,faster disease progression rates were associated with higher NLR values(odds ratio=1.211,95%confidence interval[CI]:1.090–1.346,Psurvival time in Group 3 was significantly shorter(log-rank P=0.002).The NLR value was considered an independent parameter for the prediction of survival in ALS patients after normalizing for all other potential parameters(hazard ratio[HR]=1.079,95%CI:1.016–1.146,P=0.014).The effects on ALS survival remained significant when adjusted for treatment(HR=1.074,95%CI:1.012–1.141,P_(trend)=0.019)or when considering the stratified NLR value(HR=1.115,95%CI:1.009–1.232,P_(trend)=0.033).Thus,the NLR may help to predict the rate of disease progression and survival in patients with sporadic *** study was approved by the Institutional Ethics Committee of West China Hospital of Sichuan University,China(approval No.2015(236))on December 23,2015.
