Effects of surround suppression on response adaptation of V1 neurons to visual stimuli

The influence of intracortical inhibition on the response adaptation of visual cortical neurons remains in debate. To clarify this issue, in the present study the influence of surround suppression evoked through the local inhibitory interneurons on the adaptation effects of neurons in the primary visual cortex （V1） were observed. Moreover, the adaptations of V1 neurons to both the high-contrast visual stimuli presented in the classical receptive field （CRF） and to the costimulation presented in the CRF and the surrounding nonclassical receptive field （nCRF） were compared. The intensities of surround suppression were modulated with different sized grating stimuli. The results showed that the response adaptation of V1 neurons decreased significantly with the increase of surround suppression and this adaptation decrease was due to the reduction of the initial response of V1 neurons to visual stimuli. However, the plateau response during adaptation showed no significant changes. These findings indicate that the adaptation effects of V1 neurons may not be directly affected by surround suppression, but may be dynamically regulated by a negative feedback network and be finely adjusted by its initial spiking response to stimulus. This adaptive regulation is not only energy efficient for the central nervous system, but also beneficially acts to maintain the homeostasis of neuronal response to long-presenting visual signals.

Stimuli in the non-classical receptive field（nCRF）,although alone cannot drive the cell’s visual response,can suppress or facilitate the response to stimuli in the classical receptive field（CRF）.The surround modulation exhibits orientation specificity,with maximum surround suppression for iso-orientation stimuli in CRF and nCRF,and less suppression or facilitation for cross-orientation *** investigated the dependence of this surround modulation on brain state in rat V1 *** measured the effect of nCRF modulation using drifting gratings of different sizes and found three types of neurons:surround suppression,plateau,and surround *** induce change in brain state,we electrically stimulated the pedunclepontine tegmental nucleus（PPT）,leading to a transition from synchronized state to desynchromzed *** found that the majority of V1 neurons exhibited enhanced surround suppression in the desynchronized *** surround suppression cells and plateau cells,we further measured the orientation selectivity of surround modulation by presenting iso- or cross-orientation in the CRF and *** found that the neurons were more selective to the cross-orientation configuration in the desynchronized state,and the change in selectivity was correlated with the enhancement in surround ***,cortical desynchronization enhanced the surround suppression and shifted the surround preference of neurons toward cross-orientation stimuli,Such brain state-dependent surround modulation may play an important role in the process of figure-ground segregation.

Avian contrast sensitivity inspired contour detector for unmanned aerial vehicle landing

Runway detection is a demanding task for autonomous landing of unmanned aerial vehicles. Inspired by the attenuation effect and surround suppression mechanism, a novel biologically computational method based on the avian contrast sensitivity is proposed for runway contour detection. For the noisy stimuli, deniosed responses of the biologically inspired Gabor energy operator are generalized followed by the denoising layer and the multiresolution fusion layer. Moreover, two factors such as contour effect and texture suppression are considered in the contrast sensitivity based surround inhibition. Different from traditional detectors, which do not distinguish between contours and texture edges, the proposed method can respond strongly to contours and suppress the texture information. Applying the contrast sensitivity inspired detector to noisy runway scenes yields effective contours, while the non-meaningful texture elements are removed dramatically at the same time. Besides the superior performance over traditional detectors, the proposed method is capable to provide insight into the attenuation effect of the avian contrast sensitivity function and has potential applications in computer vision and pattern recognition.

A feature-wise attention module based on the difference with surrounding features for convolutional neural networks

Attention mechanism has become a widely researched method to improve the performance of convolutional neural networks(CNNs).Most of the researches focus on designing channel-wise and spatial-wise attention modules but neglect the importance of unique information on each feature,which is critical for deciding both“what”and“where”to *** this paper,a feature-wise attention module is proposed,which can give each feature of the input feature map an attention ***,the module is based on the well-known surround suppression in the discipline of neuroscience,and it consists of two sub-modules,Minus-Square-Add(MSA)operation and a group of learnable non-linear mapping *** MSA imitates the surround suppression and defines an energy function which can be applied to each feature to measure its *** group of non-linear functions refines the energy calculated by the MSA to more reasonable *** these two sub-modules,feature-wise attention can be well ***,due to the simple structure and few parameters of the two sub-modules,the proposed module can easily be almost integrated into any *** verify the performance and effectiveness of the proposed module,several experiments were conducted on the Cifar10,Cifar100,Cinic10,and Tiny-ImageNet datasets,*** experimental results demonstrate that the proposed module is flexible and effective for CNNs to improve their performance.
