Behavior of Siderophile and Chalcophile Elements in the subcontinental lithospheric mantle beneath the Changbaishan Volcano,NE China

The mantle xenoliths in the Quaternary ChangbaishanVolcano in southern Jilin Province contain spinel-facies lherzolites. The equilibration temperatures for these samples range from 902℃ to 1064℃ based on the two-pyroxene thermometer of Brey and Kohler （1990）, and using the oxybarometry of Nell and Wood （1991）, the oxidation state was estimated from FMQ-1.32 to -0.38 with an average value of FMQ-0.81 （n = 8）, which is comparable to that of abyssal peridotites and the asthenospheric mantle. ThefO2 values of peridotites, together with their bulk rock compositions （e.g., Mg#, Al2O3, CaO, Ni, Co, Cr） and mineral compositions （e.g., Mg# of olivine and pyroxene, Cr# [=Cr/ [Cr＋Al]] and Mg# [=Mg/[Mg＋Fe2~] of spinel）, suggest that the present-day subcontinental lithospheric mantle （SCLM） beneath the Changbaishan Volcano most likely formed from an upwelling asthenosphere at some time after the late Mesozoic and has undergone a low degree of partial melting. The studied lherzolite xenoliths show low concentrations of S, Cu, and platinum group elements （PGE）, which plot a flat pattern on primitive-mantle normalized diagram. Very low concentrations in our samples suggest that PGEs occur as alloys or hosted by silicate and oxide minerals. The compositions of the studied samples are similar to those of peridotite xenoliths in the Longgang volcanic field （LVF） in their mineralogy and bulk rock compositions including the abundance of chalcophile and siderophile elements. However, they are distinctly different from those of peridotite xenoliths in other areas of the North China Craton （NCC） in terms of Cu, S and PGE. Our data suggest that the SCLM underlying the northeastern part of the NCC may represent a distinct unit of the newly formed lithospberic mantle.

The longevity of subcontinental lithospheric mantle beneath Jiangsu-Anhui Region——The Os isotope model age of mantle-derived peridotite xenoliths

The basalt-borne peridotite xenoliths from Jiangsu-Anhui provinces were analyzed for whole rock Os isotopic compositions in two laboratories of USTC, China and CRPG, France, respectively. The ^(187)Os/^(188)Os ratio of the sample set ranges from 0.119 to 0.129 (25 samples, USTC) and from 0.117 to 0.131 (17 samples, CRPG). The Os isotopic compositions of most samples are less than 0.129 and depleted relatively to the primitive mantle, showing a good correlation with the major element compositions. With the ^(187)Os/^(188)Os-AI2O3 alumichron, the samples yield a model age of 2.5±0.1 Ga (data of USTC) and 1.9±0.1 Ga (data of CRPG), late Archean to early Pro-terozoic. The two samples with the lowest ^(187)Os/^(188)Os ratio (0.119 and 0.117) have the T_(RD) (Re depleted age) of 1.1 Ga (USTC) and 1.4 Ga (CRPG), mid-Proterozoic. The Os isotope model age shows that the peridotite xenoliths from Cenozoic alkali basalt in Jiangsu-Anhui provinces have an old formation age (early- to mid- Proterozoic). They are not newly produced mantle after the Phanerozoic replacement of the lithosphere mantle, but residual fractions of Proterozoic mantle.

The ages of subcontinental lithospheric mantle beneath the North China and South China cratons are less well-constrained than the overlying *** report Re-Os isotope systematics of mantle xenoliths entrained in Paleozoic kimberlites and Mesozoic basalts from eastern *** xenoliths from the Fuxian and Mengyin Paleozoic diamondiferous kimberlites in the North China Craton give Archean Re depletion ages of 2.6-3.2 Ga and melt depletion ages of 2.9-3.4 *** obvious differences in Re and Os abundances,Os isotopic ratios and model ages are observed between spinel-facies and garnet-facies peridotites from both kimberlite *** Re-Os isotopic data,together with the PGE concentrations,demonstrate that beneath the Archean continental crust of the eastern North China Craton,Archean lithospheric mantle of spinel- to diamond-facies existed without apparent compositional stratification during the *** Mesozoic and Cenozoic basalt-borne peridotite and pyroxenite xenoliths,on the other hand,show geochemical features indicating metasomatic enrichment,along with a large range of the Re-Os isotopic model ages from Proterozoic to *** features indicate that lithospheric transformation or refertilization through melt-peridotite interaction could be the primary mechanism for compositional changes during the Phanerozoic,rather than delamination or thermal-mechanical erosion,despite the potential of these latter processes to play an important role for the loss of garnet-facies mantle.A fresh garnet lherzolite xenolith from the Yangtze Block has a Re depletion age of～1.04 Ga,much younger than overlying Archean crustal rocks but the same Re depletion ages as spinel lherzolite xenoliths from adjacent Mesozoic basalts,indicating Neoproterozoic resetting of the Re-Os system in the South China Craton.

Kimberlite,a deep-sourced ultramafic potassic rock,carries not only diamond,but also invaluable mantle xenoliths and/or xenocrysts,which are important for tracking the evolution of subcontinental lithospheric mantle (SCLM).However,it is challenging to accurately determine the emplacement age of kimberlite and its compositions of primary magma because of modifications by crustal and/or mantle contamination and postemplacement *** paper reports emplacement ages of diamondiferous kimberlites in Mengyin and Fuxian of the North China Craton(NCC) using three different dating *** Mengyin kimberlite,singlegrain phlogopite Rb-Sr dating yields an isochron age of 485±4Ma,U-Th-Pb analyses on perovskite give a U-Pb age of 480.6±2.9 Ma and a Th-Pb age of 478.9±3.9 Ma,and baddeleyite yields a Pb-Pb age of 480.4±3.9 *** Fuxian kimberlite,baddeleyite gives a Pb-Pb age of 479.6±3.9 Ma,indicating that the Paleozoic kimberlites in the NCC were emplaced at～480 *** lines of evidence indicate that the studied baddeleyites are xenocrysts from the SCLM,and can be used to constrain Hf isotope compositions(ε (t)～-6) of the SCLM when kimberlite *** with data from Mesozoic-Cenozoic mantle-derived rocks and xenoliths,the Hf isotope evolution trend of the SCLM beneath NCC before craton destruction was tentatively constructed,which suggested that the Archean SLCM was enriched by metasomatism at～1.3 Ga. Further Hf isotope investigations on additional SCLM-derived materials could be used to compare with the constructed Hf isotope evolution trend before craton destruction to determine when lithospheric thinning occurred.

In situ characterization of forearc serpentinized peridotite from the Sulu ultrahigh-pressure terrane: Behavior of fluid-mobile elements in continental subduction zone

Serpentinized peridotites in the Yangkou(YK),Suoluoshu(SLS) and Hujialin(HJL) areas in the Sulu ultrahighpressure terrane represent the relic of ancient subcontinental lithospheric mantle below the North China *** protoliths,harzburgite and dunite,were variably hydrated by aqueous fluids released from subducting Yangtze *** rocks are enriched in fluid-mobile elements(FME) including Sb(42–333 times the depleted mantle value) and Pb(30–476 times).The degrees of the FME enrichment are comparable to that of the Himalayan forearc serpentinites,and greater than forearc mantle serpentinites from Marianas,suggesting that the degrees of FME enrichment in the forearc serpentinites are greater in continental subduction zones than those in the oceanic subduction *** after olivine in the SLS serpentinite shows higher degrees of enrichment in Sb and As than those for antigorite after both olivine and orthopyroxene in the YK *** antigorite has highly enriched in Pb,U,Cs,and LREE,but not for the *** abundance of FME in two different species of serpentine reflects the different temperature of *** temperature lower than 300 ℃,formed lizardite at shallow depths of the mantle wedge incorporates elements that are fluid mobile at low temperatures,such as Sb and *** the temperature greater than 300 ℃,formed antigorite at a relatively deep mantle wedge incorporate more FME from the subducting continental slab(or fragments),including Pb,U,Cs,LREE as well as Sb and *** eventual breakdown of antigorite(600–700 ℃) in prograde metamorphism would discharge water as well as FME into the subducting channel and/or the overlying mantle.

Previous studies of samples of subcontinental lithospheric mantle(SCLM) that underlay the North China Craton(NCC) during the Paleozoic have documented the presence of thick Archean SCLM at this *** contrast,samples of SCLM underlying the NCC during the Cenozoic are characterized by evidence for melt depletion during the Proterozoic,and relatively recent juvenile additions to the *** observations,coupled with geophysical evidence for relatively thin lithosphere at present,have led to the conclusion that the SCLM underlying the NCC was thinned and modified subsequent to the late *** order to extend the view into both the Paleozoic and modern SCLM underlying the NCC,we examine mantle xenoliths and xenocrystic chromites extracted from three Paleozoic kimberlites(Tieling,Fuxian and Mengyin),and mantle xenoliths extracted from one Cenozoic basaltic center(Kuandian). Geochemical data suggest that most of the Kuandian xenoliths are residues of small degrees of partial melting from chemically primitive ***-Nd-Hf isotopic analyses indicate that the samples were removed from long-term depleted SCLM that had later been variably enriched in incompatible *** isotopic compositions of the two most refractory xenoliths are depleted relative to the modern convecting upper mantle and have model melt depletion ages that indicate melt depletion during *** relatively depleted xenoliths have Os isotopic compositions consistent with the modern convecting upper *** observation is generally consistent with earlier data for xenoliths from other Cenozoic volcanic systems in the NCC and surrounding ***,the present SCLM underlying the NCC has a complex age structure,but does not appear to retain materials with Archean melt depletion ages.
