Macroscopic and microscopic mechanical behaviors of climbing tendrils

Tendril-bearing climbing plants must recur to the tendril helices with chiral perversion or dual chirality for climbing and to obtain sun exposure. Despite researchers' prolonged fascination with climbing tendrils since Darwin's time and even earlier, why the soft and slender tendrils can bear heavy loads such as the self-weight of a plant or additional load caused by rain remains elusive. In this paper, we take towel gourd tendrils as an example and investigate the macroscopic and microscopic mechanical behaviors of tendrils through experiments and simulations. Our study indicates that the tendril filament exhibits rubber-like hyperelastic behaviors and can particularly endure large elongation, which is mainly attributed to the superelasticity of the cellulose fibril helix contained in the cell wall. Combination of the tendril helical structure with dual chirality or chiral perversion at a macroscale and a cellulose filament helix at a subcellular level creates superior elasticity for biological species relying on support and climbing. This study provides deep insight into the structure-property relationship of climbing tendrils, and the relationship is useful for the bioinspired design of composite systems with superior elasticity.

CH_(4) storage associated with adsorbed natural gas(ANG)technology is an issue attracting great *** the Advanced Research Project Agency-Energy(ARPA-E)targeted deliverable capacity of 315 cm^(3)·cm^(-3)(STP),hundreds of thousands of materials have been experimentally or theoretically evaluated,while the best results still show a 35% gap from the ***,recent theoretical research reveals that the target is beyond the possibility that real materials can be *** get rid of the awkward situation,we make attempts on investigating the CH_(4) delivery performance under other operation *** of raising the discharge temperature(to infinite high)or elevating the storage pressure(to 25 MPa)have been proved to show limited *** this work,it is found that the ARPA-E target can be achieved by using a decreasing storage temperature *** taking 280 CoRE(computation-ready,experimental)COFs(covalent organic frameworks)as ANG materials,when reduce the storage temperature to 190.6 K,the highest deliverable capacity can reach 392 cm^(3)·cm^(-3)(STP),and 16.1% CoRE COFs can surpass the *** target is also achievable when storage at 220 *** performance relationships study shows strong correlation between deliverable capacity and void ***,120 hypothetical COFs are generated to ascertain the optimum void *** addition,the performance of 2D-COFs can be greatly enhanced by increasing the interlayer spacings,***_(4) deliverable capacity(storage at 190.6 K)of ATFG-COF can be improved from 239 to 411 cm^(3)·cm^(-3)(STP)when interlayer spacing is enlarged to 1.65 nm.

Novel boron-containing bioengineering copoly- mer and its α-hydoxy-ω-methoxy-poly(ethy- lene oxide (PEO) macrobranched derivatives were synthesized by (1) partially amidolysis of poly(maleic anhydride-alt-methyl vinyl ether) w?th ethanolamine ester of diphenylboronic acid and (2) esterification of synthesized B-con- taining copolymers with PEO. They had a com- bination of hydrophilic/hydrophobic linkages, free carboxylic groups, positive charges and an ionized organoboron linkage as antitumor sites, along with an ability to interact with HeLa cells. The structure, composition and properties (cy- totoxicity and antitumor activity) of synthe- sized copolymers were investigated. In vitro cytotoxicity results, obtained by the fluore scence microscopy measurements indicate that unlike the virgin copolymer, boron-containing and PEO macrobranched derivatives exhibit higher antitumor activity. It was found that organoboron copolymer exhibits the most apo- ptotic and necrotic effects against HeLa cells whereas a minor effect relative to cancer cells was observed on L929 Fibroblast cells.

Organosoluble and Thermally Stable of Benzazole-Containing Poly(Imide-Urea)s: One-Pot Synthesis and Characterization

The preparation of new types of poly(imide-urea)s (PIUs) with high thermal stability and improved solubility was investigated. Three series of aromatic poly(imide-urea)s (PIUOa-c, PIUSa-c, and PIUNa-c) bearing pendent benzoxazole, benzothiazole or benzimidazole rings were prepared by one-pot polycondensation reaction of three bis(imide-carboxylic acid)s, 2-[3,5-bis(N-trimellitimidoyl)-phenyl]benzoxazole (1O), 2-[3,5-bis(N- trimellitimidoyl)-phenyl]benzothiazole (1S), or 2-[3,5-bis(N-trimellitimidoyl)-phenyl]benzimidazole (1N) with various kinds of aromatic diamines (a-c). The effects of the benzazole pendent groups on the polymer properties such as solubility and thermal stability were investigated by comparison of the polymers. All of the resulting polymers exhibited excellent solubility in common polar solvents. The glass transition temperature of the polymers determined by DSC thermograms were in the range 192℃ - 236℃. The temperatures at 10% weight loss from their TGA curves were found to be in the range 390℃ - 441℃ in nitrogen.
