structural coloration generates colors by the interaction between incident light and micro-or nanoscale *** has received tremendous interest for decades,due to advantages including robustness against bleaching and environmentally friendly properties(compared with conventional pigments and dyes).As a versatile coloration strategy,the tuning of structural colors based on micro-and nanoscale photonic structures has been extensively explored and can enable a broad range of applications including displays,anti-counterfeiting,and ***,scholarly research on structural colors has had limited impact on commercial products because of their disadvantages in cost,scalability,and *** this review,we analyze the key challenges and opportunities in the development of structural *** first summarize the fundamental mechanisms and design strategies for structural colors while reviewing the recent progress in realizing dynamic structural *** promising potential applications including optical information processing and displays are also discussed while elucidating the most prominent challenges that prevent them from translating into technologies on the ***,we address the new opportunities that are underexplored by the structural coloration community but can be achieved through multidisciplinary research within the emerging research areas.

Tunable colors and conductivity by electroless growth of Cu/Cu2O particles on sol-gel modified cellulose

Development of colored surfaces by formation of nano-structured aggregates is a widely used strategy in nature to color lightweight structures (e.g. butterflies) without the use of dye pigments. The deposition of nanoscale particles mimics nature in it’s approach coloring surfaces. This work presents sol-gel modification of cellulose surfaces used to form a template for growth of Cu/Cu2O core–shell particles with defined size-distributions. Besides improving the adhesion of the deposited particulate material, the sol-gel matrix serves as a template for the control of particle sizes of the Cu/Cu2O structures, and as a consequence of particle size variation the surface color is tunable. As an example, red color was achieved with an average particle size of 35 nm, and shifts gradually to blue appearance when particles have grown to 80 nm on the sol-gel modified fabric. The copper concentration on representative fabrics is kept low to avoid modifying the textile characteristics and were all in the range of 150–170 mg per g of cellulose material. As a result of copper deposition on the surface of the material, the cellulose fabric also became electrically conductive. Remarkably, the electrical conductivity was found to be dependent on the average particle sizes of the deposits and thus related to the change in observed color. The generation of color by growth of nano-sized particles on sol-gel templates provides a highly promising approach to stain surfaces by physical effects without use of synthetic colorants, which opens a new strategy to improve environmental profile of coloration.

Achromatic patches are a common element of plumage patterns in many bird species and there is growing body of evidence that in many avian taxa they can play a signaling role in mate *** the blue tit Cyanistes caeruleus is a well-established model species in the studies on coloration,its white wing patch has never been examined in the context of sex-specific trait *** this exploratory study,we examined sexual size dimorphism and dichromatism of greater covert’s dots creating white wing patch and analyzed its correlations with current body condition and crown coloration—a trait with established role in sexual ***,we qualitatively analyzed microstructural barb morphology underlying covert’s *** found significant sexual dimorphism in the dot size independent of covert size and sexual dichromatism in both white dot and blue outer covert’s vane spectral *** structure of covert barbs within the white dot was similar to the one found in barbs from the blue part that is,with a medullary area consisting of dead keratinocytes containing channel-typeß-keratin spongy nanostructure and centrally located air ***,it lacked melanosomes which was the main observed ***,UV chroma of covert’s blue vane was positively correlated with crown UV chroma and current condition(the latter only in males),which should be a premise for further research on the signal function of the wing stripe.

The use of submicron structures for structural coloration of surfaces has broad applications for color filters,projection displays,virtual reality,and ***,structural color images lack high resolution due to low manufacturing *** this study,the axial-feed fly cutting(AFC)method is proposed to fabricate submicron grooves for the diffraction of visible light to create structural color *** establish the relationship between the color information in the pixels of the original image and the parameters of the array units corresponding to the *** algorithm to determine groove spacing and the tool path is established,and array units with the desired groove spacing are machined to reproduce the structural color *** submicron grooves fabricated by AFC have high quality and good *** to the excellent diffraction performance of the machined grooves,images with high saturation and resolution can be *** is verified that images with various colors can be efficiently fabricated using the proposed method and algorithm.

The dynamics of color signals in male threespine sticklebacks Gasterosteus aculeatus

Body coloration and color patterns are ubiquitous throughout the animal kingdom and vary be- tween and within species. Recent studies have dealt with individual dynamics of various aspects of coloration, as it is in many cases a flexible trait and changes in color expression may be context-de- pendent. During the reproductive phase, temporal changes of coloration in the visible spectral range （400-700 nm） have been shown for many animals but corresponding changes in the ultravio- let （UV） waveband （300-400 nm） have rarely been studied. Threespine stickleback Gasterosteus aculeatus males develop conspicuous orange-red breeding coloration combined with UV reflect- ance in the cheek region. We investigated dynamics of color patterns including UV throughout a male breeding cycle, as well as short-term changes in coloration in response to a computer- animated rival using reflectance spectrophotometry and visual modeling, to estimate how colors would be perceived by conspecifics. We found the orange-red component of coloration to vary during the breeding cycle with respect to hue （theta/R50） and intensity （achieved chroma/red chroma）. Furthermore, color intensity in the orange-red spectral part （achieved chroma） tended to be increased after the presentation of an artificial rival. Dynamic changes in specific measures of hue and intensity in the UV waveband were not found. In general, the orange-red component of the signal seems to be dynamic with respect to color intensity and hue. This accounts in particular for color changes during the breeding cycle, presumably to signal reproductive status, and with limitations as well in the intrasexual context, most likely to signal dominance or inferiority.
