Impact of mechanical stress and tension-stress on angiogenesis in wound healing

Angiogenesis plays a fundamental role in the development of the embryonic vascular tree as well as in several normal and pathologic conditions during postnatal life. Blood supply, established by neovascularization, is imperative for histogenesis during wound healing as well as the limb lengthening applied extensively in the treatment of skeletal trauma sequalae. But little attention has been paid to this area. This review aims to summarize angiogenesis regulation, the process of angiogenesis in wound healing and angiogenesis under mechanical stress, particularly in association with the tension-stress principle.

Morphological properties and residual strain along the small intestine in rats

AIM: Residual stress and strain are important for gastrointestinal function and relate to the geometric configuration, the loading conditions and the zero-stress state of the gastrointestinal tract. The purpose of this project is to provide morphometric data and residual strains for the rat small intestine ( n =11). METHODS: To approach the no-load state, the intestine was surgically excised, transferred to an organ bath and cut transversely into short ring-shaped segments. Each ring was cut radially for obtaining the zero-stress state. The residual stress can be characterised by an opening angle. The strain difference between the zero-stress state and the no-load state is called residual strain. RESULTS: Large morphometric variations were found along the small intestine. The wall thickness was highest in the proximal duodenum and decreased in distal direction along the axis of the small intestine (Pstress state the rings always opened up after making the cut. The experiments resulted in larger inner circumferential length and smaller outer circumferential length when compared to the no-load state. The wall thickness and wall area did not differ between the no-load and zero-stress state. The opening angle and tangent rotation angle increased along the length of the duodenum and had its highest value 30% down the intestine. Further down the intestine it decreased again (P<0.001). The serosal residual strain was tensile with the highest value close to the ligament of Treitz (P<0.001). The mucosal residual strain was compressive in all segments of the small intestine with average values between -0.25 and -0.4 and with the lowest values close to the ligament of Treitz (P<0.001). Role of precoating in artificial vessel endothelialization

As the progress of vascular surgery, artificial vessels have become the substitute for large and middle diameter vessels but have not for small diameter ones owing to thrombogenesis and occlusion within a short period of time after being applied. Artificial vessel endothelialization is one of the ideal methods to resolve such issue and has been improved continuously since Herring in 1978 put forward this term in the first time and utilized vascular endothelial cells (ECs) harvested from living animals to perform the test of artificial vessel endothelialization. However, human endothelial cells show little adhesion to the currently available vascular graft materials and some expanded polytetrafluoroethylene (ePTFE) grafts have shown only 10%+/-7% endothelial cell attachment rate (ECA, ie, attachment of ECs when incubated in vitro). Moreover, when the graft is exposed to pulsatile blood flow, a high proportion of cells are washed off from the lumen. Maximum cell loss occurs in the first 30-45 min after exposure to pulsatile flow, with up to 70% of cells lost. After that, a slower exponential loss occurs over the next 24 h. The lack of retention of cells could be partly overcome by sodding, but other techniques, involving engineering the lumen to improve ECA and endothelial cell retention rate (ECR, ie, retention of ECs when the grafts are exposed to pulsatile flow) have been developed. These include shear stress preconditioning, electrostatic charging and, above all, most successfully to date, precoating with EC specific adhesive glues that are mostly found in the extracellular basement membrane of blood vessels. The commonest are chemical coatings, preclotting, chemical bonding, and surface modifications.

Three-dimensional finite element analysis of lumbar vertebra loaded by static stress and its biomechanical significance

Objective： To explore the mechanical behavior of lumbar spine loaded by stress and provide the mechanical basis for clinical analysis and judgement of lumbar spine fracture classification, mechanical distribution and static stress. Methods： By means of computer simulation method, the constructed lumbar spine three-dimensional model was introduced into three-dimensional finite element analysis by software Ansys 7.0. The lumbar spine mechanical behavior in different parts of the stress loading were calculated. Impact load is 0-8000 N. The peak value was 8000 N. The loading time is 0-40 minutes. The values of the main stress, stress distribution and the lumbar spine unit displacement in the direction of main stress were analyzed. Results： The lumbar spine model was divided into a total of 121 239 nodes, 112 491 units. It could objectively reflect the true anatomy of lumbar spine and its biomechanical behavior and obtain the end-plate images under different stress. The stress distribution on the lumbar intervertebral disc （L3-L4） under the axial, lateral flexion and extension stress, and the displacement trace of the corresponding processus articularis were analyzed. Conclusion： It is helpful to analyze the stress distribution of lumbar spine and units displacement in static stress loading in the clinical research of lumbar spine injury and the distribution of internal stress.
