Quaternary integrative stratigraphy,biotas,and paleogeographical evolution of the Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau and its surrounding areas

The Quaternary strata on the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau contain rich information about the paleoclimate and environmental evolution,record the evolution process of the Quaternary regional tectonics,paleogeography,and geomorphology of the plateau,and are extremely important areas for studying the Quaternary geological events and regional environmental evolution.According to a comprehensive analysis of the regional stratigraphic data and the development and evolution characteristics of the biota,based on the differences in the lithostratigraphic units,sedimentary characteristics,landforms,and drainage systems,the Quaternary strata on the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau and its surrounding areas are divided into five stratigraphic regions:the Tarim region,Loess Plateau region,Qinghai-Tibet Plateau region,Yunnan-Guizhou Plateau region,and India-Ganges region.The Qinghai-Tibet Plateau stratigraphic region is divided into seven stratigraphic sub-regions:the West Kunlun-Karakorum,AltunQilian Mountains,Qaidam-Hehuang,East Kunlun-Bayan Har,Qiangtang,East Xizang-West Yunnan-West Sichuan,and Gangdise-Himalayan sub-regions.This paper briefly describes the lithostratigraphic units of the seven stratigraphic sub-regions of the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau.According to the lithostratigraphic sequence and its sedimentary characteristics,stratigraphic contact relationship,formation age,and evolution of the biota in each stratigraphic sub-region,the Quaternary tectonic paleogeographic evolution of the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau is divided into four stages.(1)The inherited differential uplift stage since the Pliocene(2.6-1.8/1.5 Ma):the regional sedimentary differences were significant,and the stratigraphic distribution was limited,the alluvial-proluvial sandy conglomerate was widely developed along the piedmont,and fluvial and lacustrine deposits were developed in the low-lying areas between the mountains.(2)The mountain range flattening stage(1.8/1.5-1.2/0.8 Ma):the erosion unconformity surfaces around the plateau were widely distributed,large rivers were

Many evidences for gas hydrate bearing sediments had been found in the continental slope of the East China Sea,such as bottom simulating reflections(BSRs),undersea gas springs,pyrite associated with methane leakage,mud diapirs/mud volcanos,bottom-water methane anomalies and so on.In this study,six key stratigraphic interfaces including T_0(seafloor),T_1(LGM,23 kyr B.P.),T_2(2.58 Myr),T_3(5.33 Myr),T_4(11.02 Myr)and T_5(16.12 Myr)were identified,and then five third-order sequences of SQIII1 to SQIII5 were divided.However,T5 in southern continental slope is not found,which shows that the middle-northern Okinawa Trough had begun to rift in the early Miocene,earlier than the southern segment.Four system tracts including lowstand systems tract(LST),transgressive systems tract(TST),highstand systems tract(HST)and falling stage systems tract(FSST)are further divided.The marine erosion interface of 11.02 Myr and regressive unconformity interface of 23 kyr B.P.indicate two large-scale sea level drop events in the research area.Seven typical seismic facies identified in the continental slope are continental shelf-edge deltas,littoral fluvial-delta plains,incised channels or submarine canyons,slope fans,submarine fans or coastal sandbars,littoral-neritic finegrained sediments,mud volcanos and some other geological bodies respectively.The minimum water depth for hydrate occurrence in the Okinawa Trough is 630 m,and the thickness of gas hydrate stability zone in continental slope is between 0 and 590 m.The calculated bottom boundary of hydrate stability zone is slightly deeper than BSRs on the seismic sections.The re-depositional turbidite sand bodies,such as canyon channels,slope fans and submarine fans developed in Quaternary strata,are the predominant hydrate reservoirs.According to developing process,the dynamic accumulation of hydrate systems can be divided into three evolutionary stages including canyon erosion and hydrate stability zone migration stage,sediments destabilizing and methane leakage stage,and channel filli

The Qaidam Basin is a larger sedimentary basin in western China where the thickness of the Quaternary deposits is in the range of 2000-3000 m at its subsiding center. This paper first dates palaeomagnetically the cores obtained from the five continuously sampled intervals and those from a typical profile, determineds the age of the index fossil zones, and calculates the deposition rates for the varve deposits based on the sedimentological analysis. As a result, we can calculate the ages of the various characteristic beds (including fossil zones, seismic reflection beds, and marker layers of electrical properties) for any given borehole-section when it was divided into facies, and check the validity of the chronology. According to all those studies, the stratigraphic and geochronologic analysis program of the Quaternary deposits in the Qaidam Basin has permitted a detailed discussion to be made in this paper.

The Permian seamount stratigraphic sequence in Chiang Mai, North Thailand and its tectogeographic significance

The widespread Permian carbonate strata outcropped in northwestern Thailand are considered as the evidence for the Late Paleozoic shallow Tethys. Our investigation, however, shows that basalt can be discovered usually under the Permian carbonate sequence in Chiang Mai-Fang area, northwestern Thailand. The basalt belongs to subalkalic basalt and potassic trachybasalt. They are characterized by high P and Ti in major elements, by high content, enriching LREE, lacking δEu anomaly in rare earth elements, and by enrichment of the large ion lithophile element (LILE) (K, Rb, Ba) and high field strength element (HFSE) (Nb, Ta, Zr) in trace elements, which can be compared with the characters of the oceanic island basalt in Three Rivers (Jinsha River, Lancang River, and Nujiang River) area, southwestern China. Therefore, the Permian carbonate in the studied area was deposited on a sea-mount, rather than on a stable carbonate platform. The oceanic basin is correlated to the Late Paleozoic ocean represented by the Changning-Menglian Belt in southwestern China and they are a major basin of the Paleo-Tethyan Archipelagoes Ocean. The result indicates nonexistence of a Shan-Thai Block in the Late Paleozoic.

Cycladophora davisiana(Radiolarian)in the Bering Sea during the late Quaternary:A stratigraphic tool and proxy of the glacial Subarctic Pacific Intermediate Water

Cycladophora davisiana (Radiolarian) contents are counted in two cores of the Ber-ing Sea and correlated well with the oxygen isotopic records of ice in the deep core obtained by the Greenland Ice Sheet Project II (GISP 2) and deep-sea sediments (SPECMAP) of the world oceans. Millennial scale climatic events, for example, Younge Dryas and B?lling/Aller?d events, Heinrich1 and Dansgaard-Oeschger1events, recorded by C. davisiana percents are distin-guished from Core B4-2. C. davisiana events b, c1, c2, d, e1 and e2, respectively, corresponding to oxygen isotopic 2.0, 3.1, 3.3, 4.0, 5.1 and 5.3, are identified from Core B2-9. High resolution re-cords of C. davisian are tuned to the oxygen isotopic records in GISP 2 and SPECMAP and the depth-age frameworks are established in the two cores, supplying a stratigraphic base for future paleoceanographic and paleoclimatic studies. High C. davisiana during the glacial periods in the two cores indicate that they can serve as a proxy of the glacial Subarctic Pacific Intermediate Water, which verifies the glacial Subarctic Pacific Intermediate Water brought from the Bering Sea.

Sedimentary Facies, Sequence stratigraphic Patterns in Pre-Cenozoic Inland Compressional Basin: Example from Early Yanshanian Succession of Eastern Yihezhuang Salient, Jiyang Depression, Bohai Bay Basin, China

To improve the success rate of locating hydrocarbon reservoirs in pre-Cenozoic inland compressional basins, taking the Early Yanshanian succession of eastern Yihezhuang salient as an example, this paper studied the sedimentary facies and sequence stratigraphic patterns. First, through seismic profiles, well logs, cores and outcrops, the sequence framework was established and internal sedimentary facies were identified. Further, according to analysis of single-wells and connecting-wells, the vertical evolution and horizontal distribution of sedimentation inside the sequence frameworks were discussed. The following results were acquired:(1) meandering river characterized by dual structures superposing each other was developed, and the dual structures can be further divided into three kinds;(2) the entire Early Yanshanian succession was interpreted as one first-order sequence, composed of three third-order sequences, including SQ-Fz1, SQ-Fz2 and SQ-St from bottom to top. Each third-order sequence can be further divided into three system tracts;(3) in different system tracts, different types of dual structures developed separately, and sedimentary bodies showed different horizontal distribution scales and vertical superposition patterns. Finally, the model of sequence stratigraphic patterns was established. This study enhanced the use of sequence stratigraphy to inland tectonically active basins, and would be helpful to predict reservoirs in pre-Cenozoic residual basins.

Based on the data of 1:250000 geological mapping completed by CGS and the previous literature of the Cenozoic strata, 98 remnant basins and 5 stratigraphic realms with 13 stratigraphic subrealms have been recognized on the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau and its adjacent area. Through the research of the types of remnant basins, tectonic setting, stratigraphic sequence and sedimentary characteristics, contact relationship between the strata, the formation time and evolution history of sediments, we divided the uplift process and sedimentary response of the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau into 3 stages and 8 sub-stages, namely, subduction-collision uplift stage (65-34 Ma) with three sub-stages, intercontinental convergence and compressive uplift stage (34-13 Ma) with three sub-stages, and intercontinental isostatic adjustment uplift stage (since 13 Ma) with two sub-stages.

Paired δ^13Ccarb-δ^13Corg Evolution of the Dengying Formation from Northeastern Guizhou and Implications for stratigraphic Correlation and the Late Ediacaran Carbon Cycle

This study provides δ^13C profiles from a lower-slope(Well ZK102)to basin(Bahuang Section)environment to better understand the temporal and spatial variability in δ^13Ccarb-δ^13Corg of the Yangtze Block during the Late Ediacaran.Our new δ^13C profiles together with the reported data suggest that the Upper Ediacaran successions from different depositional environments are generally bounded by negative δ^13Ccarb and/or δ^13Corg excursions in the underlying and overlying strata.Moreover,the Upper Ediacaran δ^13Ccarb profiles generally can be subdivided into two positive excursions and an interjacent negative excursion,whereas the paired δ^13Corg profiles from different depositional environments have individual variation trends.On the other hand,these data show a large surface-to-deep waterδ^13C gradient(~5‰variation in δ^13Ccarb,>10‰variation in δ^13Corg)which can be reasonably explained by the heterogeneity of the biological activities in the redox-stratified water column.Furthermore,the decoupled δ^13Ccarb-δ^13Corg pattern with large δ^13Corg perturbations at the lower slope precluded the existence of a large dissolved organic carbon reservoir at the Yangtze Block during the Late Ediacaran.Thus,the high δ^13Ccarb values in the Upper Ediacaran succession could be balanced by large amounts of buried organic carbon likely associated with high productivity.

THE TERTIARY stratigraphic SEQUENCE OF YANYUAN BASIN IN THE SOUTHEASTERN MARGIN OF THE QINGHAI—TIBET PLATEAU

The Cenozoic Yanyuan basin is located in the huge Longmenshan—Jinpingshan nappetectonic belt along the eastern margin of the Qinghai—Tibet plateau. The basin is the largest and the best\|preserved intraorogenic basin above 2300m ASL.The basin has deposited different kinds of sediments with 1600m in depth. The early Tertiary strata were first named as Lijiang formation in 1961, and later named as Hongyanzi formation. The later Tertiary strata, the lignite\|bearing strata, were once named as Xigeda formation. Li Yougheng(1978) found some mammal fossils in the strata, so they named it Yanyuan formation. The Hongyanzi Formation which thickness is 1022m can be divided into five members according to the lithologic characters. The first one is mainly made of purplish\|red coarse conglomerates. The composition of gravel mainly consists of limestone and purplish\|red sandstone and marl. The second one consists of sandstone interbedded with conglomerate. The member has three cyclic sequences from conglomerate to sandstone. The composition of gravel of this member is mainly limestone. From bottom to top the degree of sorting and roundness tends to be well. In sandstones or sand lenticules the oblique bedding and trough cross\|bedding can be seen. The third one is the member of sandstone and mudstone. The sandstone is light purple while the mudstone is purplish red. Ripple marks can be seen in the sandstone. The forth one consists of conglomerate interbedded with mudstone, The conglomerate and the sandstone assume three cyclic sequences. The composition of the gravel is chiefly limestone. The fifth one is a member of light purple massive conglomerate. The composition of the gravel is limestone. The imbricate structure can be seen in the conglomerate. The strata belong to later Eocene epoch in accordance with the fossils of mammals, plants and ostracoda in it.
