This paper, using Karnopp's model of friction force and phase plane method, studies the stick-slip motion of the flexible drive mechanism. It is explained that a sudden drop of friction force is the essential source of stick-slip motion when the sliding is impending. A new criterion for occurrence of stick-slip motion is established. The stick-slip region and the stable region in a parameter plane are separated by a critical parameter curve. Moreover, for the stick-slip motion of the flexible drive mechanism without viscous damping, a parameter expression is obtained. The results may be used in design of the flexible drive mechanism.

Effect of varying normal stress on stability and dynamic motion of a spring-slider system with rate- and state-dependent friction

Background, Motivation and Objective Smooth impact drive mechanism(SIDM) is a kind of piezoelectric inertial mechanism. The key part of the SIDM is piezoelectric stack. The SIDM is excited by the asymmetry drive signal, such as ramp drive signal. The SIDM has a character of nano-positioning accuracy and can be used in the fields such as micro-assemble and nanometer technology. The SIDM is driven by the asymmetry drive signal and the motion of "stick" and "slip" are produced at the driving part of friction rod. Germany researcher Matthias hunstig drives a SIDM utilizing a triangle signal. The SIDM motion process is analyzed utilizing friction force and get a conclusion that the stick–slip operation can get the maximum output velocity principally. The Korea researcher Jonghyun Lee drives a SIDM utilizing a trapezoid drive signal, which has a dual-slider and successfully is used for a compact zoom lens system. The stick-slip motion is introduced. But the stick-slip motion should be analyzed utilizing a kinematics more explicitly. Statement of Contribution/Methods In order to research the stick–slip motion utilizing kinematics in the drive process, the trapezoid signal is used for driving the SIDM. The motion of "stick" and "slip" are produced at the driving part of friction rod. The two motions can influent the slider displacement. The two motions are helpful to analysis qualitatively and quantitatively the slider displacement including forward, backward and valid step. The smooth impact diving mechanism motion process which utilizes the friction and impact force is analyzed and the motion function is obtained. The stick-slip critical time is got. The stick-slip critical time is used for judging the slider motion station. Results For test the theoretical stick-slip critical time, the experiment system is built, which is composed of personal computer, signal generator, power amplifier and laser displacement sensor. Incorporating rate and state friction laws, stability of linearly stable （i.e., with stiffness greater than the critical value） spring-slider systems subjected to triggering perturbations was analyzed under variable normal stress condition, and comparison was made between our results and that of fixed normal stress cases revealed in previous studies. For systems associated with the slip law, the critical mag- nitude of rate steps for triggering unstable slips are found to have a similar pattern to the fixed normal stress case, and the critical velocity steps scale with a/（b - a） when k = kcr for both cases. The rate-step boundaries for the variable normal stress cases are revealed to be lower than the fixed normal stress case by 7 %-16 % for a relatively large ct = 0.56 with （b - a）/a ranging from 0.25 to 1, indicating easier triggering under the variable normal stress condition with rate steps. The difference between fixed and variable normal stress cases decreases when the α value is smaller. In the same slip- law-type systems, critical displacements to trigger instability are revealed to be little affected by the variable normal stress condition. When k 〉 kcr（V,）, a spring-slider system with the slowness law is much more stable than with the slip law,suggesting that the slowness law fits experimental data better when a single state variable is adopted. In stick-slip motions, the variable normal stress case has larger stress drops than the constant normal stress case. The variable normal stress has little effect on the range of slip velocity in systems associated with the slowness law, whereas systems associated with the slip law have a slowest slip velocity immensely smaller than the fixed normal stress case, by ~ 10 orders of magnitude.

The phonon dispersion relation of the commensurate quantum Frenkel-Kontorova model is studied by means of the time-dependent variational approach combined with a Hartree-type many-body trial wavefunction for the particles. The single-particle state is taken to be a frozen Jackiw-Kerman wavefunction. Under the condition of minimum uncertainty, equations of motion for the particle expectation values are derived to obtain the phonon dispersion relation. It is shown that the strength of the substrate potential and the phonon excitation gap are reduced due to the quantum fluctuations in comparison with those of the classical model. We also compare our results with those previously obtained by using the path-integral molecular dynamics.

Two stochastic models on simple random system with friction were developed. One of them was a discrete model by a two-dimensional mean map applied to describe random stick-slip motion. The numerical examples show, that external noise can reduce the complexity of the system behavior. Secondly, a probability model described was established with coexistence of stick-slip and slip motions. The numerical results point out that this model possesses pure stochastic behavior.

This paper presents the investigation on the two-stop-two-slip (TSTS) motions in a dry friction oscillator. Friction is a kind of dissipated force. Simple dry friction oscillator implies complicated stick-slip motions. Due to its nonlinear non-smooth characters, it is difficult to analyze the stick-slip motions. First, TSTS motion is analyzed in this paper. A closed form solution of the TSTS motions is presented. In addition, parameter domain for the motion is studied. In general, there are no explicit solutions to transcendental equation in the closed form solution. However, explicit solutions are possible for special cases. Moreover, Poincare map is structured to analyze the stability of the motions.
