Interference Pattern of Density-Density Correlation for Incoherent Atoms with Vortices Released from an Optical Lattice

For a series of incoherent condensate atomic clouds with vortices （an orbital angular momentum） released from an optical lattice, the density-density correlation function of this freely expanding ultracold gases is theoretically investigated. It is shown that the nonzero angular momentum of the atoms has an important effect on the fringe pattern of density-density correlation. Particularly, for a short expansion time, even the rotation direction of the atoms could have an observable effect on the fringe pattern. Observation of this specific fringe pattern would constitute experimental evidence for the presence of a vortex in an atomic condensate.

Based on the backstepping design of smooth systems, we developed a new control law to achieve chaos control for a vibro-impact system. In our control strategy, a novel and effective controller is designed such that the output of the vibro-impact system can track any desired trajectory in its domain. The single-degree-of-freedom vibro-impact system is taken as an example to show this control procedure. Numerical simulations are provided to verify the effectiveness of the proposed method.

According to the deficiencies in Watts and Strogatz＇s small-world network model, we present a new regular model to establish the small-world network. Besides the property of the small-world, this model has other properties such as accuracy in controlling the average shortest path length L, and the average clustering coefficient C, also regular network topology as well as enhanced network robustness. This method improves the construction of the small-world network essentially, so that the regular small-world network closely resembles the actual network. We also present studies on the relationships among the quantities of a variety of edges, L and C in regular small-world network in detail, This research lays the foundation for the establishment of the regular small-world network and acts as a good guidance for further research of this model and its applications.

We investigate the heat transport behaviours of two typical lattice models, the Fermi-Pasta-Ulam-beta model and the phi(4) lattice model, in the presence of damping which imitates the effect of the thermal radiation and the thermal diffusion to the surroundings through the sample boundary. It is found that the damping does not affect the thermal conductivity, but can change the heat flux dumped into the lattice chain. We also discuss possible applications under the heuristic guidance of our numerical results. In particular, we suggest a way to measure the thermal conductivity experimentally in the presence of large energy loss arisen from the radiation and the diffusion.

Synchronization behavior of coupled dynamical systems is discussed. An equivalence relation is found between the diffeomorphic generalized synchronization and the complete synchronization of coupled nonidentical systems. Employing the method of the complete synchronization, the problem of the generalized synchronization can be unraveled. By constructing an appropriate coupling term, a sufficient condition is obtained for determining the complete synchronization of coupled nonidentical systems. Numerical simulations are also given to show the effectiveness of the proposed schemes.

We propose a new modularity criterion in complex networks, called the unifying modularity q which is independent of the number of partitions. It is shown that, for a given network, the relationship between the upper limit of Q and the number of the partitions, k, is sup（Qk） = （k - 1）/k. Since the range of Q for each partition number is inconsistent, we try to extend the concept Q to unifying modularity q, which is independent of the number of partitions. Subsequently, we indicate that it is more accurately to determine the number of partitions by using unifying modularity q than Q.

Bifurcation is investigated with the full velocity difference traffic model. Applying the Hopt theorem, an analytical Hopf bifurcation calculation is performed and the critical road length is determined for arbitrary numbers of vehicles. It is found that the Hopf bifurcation critical points locate on the boundary of the linear instability region. Crossing the boundary, the uniform traffic flow loses linear stability via Hopf bifurcation and the oscillations appear.

Recently, quantitative study on complex systems has become an attractive research area for physicists. Human scientific activity, including scientific paper publication, is an important complex system and therefore deserves an investigation. We present a simple model to describe the interaction between journals, authors and editorial board members. In the model the probabilities, with which a journal accepts papers from an author or invites him as an editorial board member, obey normal distributions. However, the most probable value of the latter distribution shifts such that the journal can have higher level authors being its editorial board members. The analytic derivation by the model is in rather good agreement with the empirical observation from the selected fifteen worldwide journals with different impact factors.

The quantum phase transition from the Mott insulator to the superfluid phases of the bosonic atoms trapped in an optical lattice, in which the on-site interaction carl be tuned by a Feshbach resonance, is investigated by a variational approach within mean-field theory. We derive an extended Bos^Hubbard model to describe this ultracold atomic system. By theoretical calculation and analysis, the phase diagram is shown clearly, and we find an exciting and novel phenomenon that is the appearance of the Mort insulator-sea （MI-sea）. Meanwhile, the experimental feasibility of observing the MI-sea is discussed by analyzing the published data related to the Fashbaeh resonance at present. Finally, the potential application of the MI-sea for quantum information processing and quantum computation is also discussed in detail
