Maternal and Fetal Outcomes Following Labour at Term in Singleton Pregnancies with Meconium-stained Amniotic Fluid: A Prospective Cohort Study

Background: Meconium stained amniotic fluid (MSAF) is frequently encountered in obstetric practice. Literature on the subject is still poorly documented in the African setting. Objective: The aim of this study was to determine the maternal and fetal outcomes in case of meconium stained amniotic fluid observed during term labour. Materials and Methods: We conducted a prospective cohort study enrolling all consenting pregnant women with term singleton fetus in cephalic presentation admitted for labour with ruptured fetal membranes in the maternity units of the Yaoundé Central Hospital (YCH) and the Yaoundé Gynaeco-Obstetric and Pediatric Hospital (YGOPH) of Cameroon between December 2014 and April 2015. The exposed grouped was considered as participants having MSAF, while the non-exposed group comprised those with clear amniotic fluid (CAF). The two groups were monitored during labor using the WHO partograph, and then followed up till 72 hours after delivery. Variables studied included the colour and texture of amniotic fluid as well as maternal and fetal complications. Data was analyzed using Epi-info version 3.5.4. The chi-square and Fischer’s exact tests were appropriately used to compare the two groups. A p-value less than 5% was considered statistically significant. Results: 2376 vaginal deliveries were recorded during the study period among which MSAF was observed in 265 cases, hence a prevalence rate of MSAF of 11.15%. Among these cases of MSAF, 52.1% was thick meconium and 47.9% was light meconium. Maternal morbidity was high in the group with MSAF;these included: Higher proportions of caesarean delivery (RR = 2.35 p -4) and prolonged labor (RR = 3 p -4). In this same group, the incidences of chorioamnionitis and puerperal sepsis were low (0.94% and 0.70% respectively), although there was a three-fold higher risk that was not statistically significant (RR = 3, P = 0.31). The fluoroehrome DAPI(4’-6-diamidino-2-phenylindole), possessing binding properties with adenine-thymine-rich DNA of various origins, characterized by its high specificity, sensitivity and simplicity has been used for the in situ studies of both cellular and extra-cellular DNA in various prokaryotie and enkaryotic organisms, but it has not yet been used in blue green algae. This note reports the observations on the variations of DNA in the differentiated cells of Anabaena azollae by means of DAPI staining.

STUDY ON TRANSLOCATION OF BARLEY STRIPE MOSAIC VIRUS WITHIN DISEASED BARLEY PLANT

It was easy to observe the particles of barley stripe mosaic virus (BSMV) in parenchyma cells in the ultrathin sections prepared from infected barley leaves according to routine methods. But no particles of BSMV were seen in phloem xylem and plasmodesmata. The research work in which the unlabelled immunoperoxidase technique was employed indicated that there was always a large amount of BSMV proteins in sieve tubes of diseased leaves. BSMV proteins were often seen in young xylem and plasmodesmata, occasionally mature xylem was also filled with them. All these facts sugest that BSMV proteins are translocated through phloem, xylem and plasmodesmata in barley plants infected with BSMV in the same way in which normal metabolic materials are translocated in healthy barley *** possibility that BSMV is translocated within the diseasod barley plant in the form of nucleic acid is discussed.

Influence of mild hypothermia on vascular endothelial growth factor and infarct volume in brain tissues after cerebral ischemia in rats

BACKGROUND: It has been demonstrated that mild hypothermia has obvious protective effect on both whole and local cerebral ischemia. However, the definite mechanism is still unclear for the brain protection of mild hypothermia on cerebral edema, inhibiting inflammatory reaction, stabilizing blood brain barrier, etc. OBJECTIVE: To investigate the effect of mild hypothermia on the expression of vascular endothelial growth factor and the infarct volume after cerebral ischemia in rats, and analyze the brain protective mechanism of mild hypothermia. DESIGN: A randomized grouping and controlled animal trial. SETTING: Department of Neurology, People’s Hospital of Yunyang Medical College. MATERIALS: Twenty adult male SD rats of clean degree, weighing (250±30) g, were provided by the animal experimental center, School of Medicine, Wuhan University. The kits for SP immunohistochemistry were purchased from Beijing Zhongshan Golden Bridge Biotechnology Co., Ltd. METHODS: The experiments were carried out in the laboratory of Department of Neurology, Renmen Hospital of Wuhan University from May to July 2005. ① The 20 rats were divided randomly into normal temperature group (n =10) and mild hypothermia group (n =10). Models of permanent middle cerebral artery occlusion were established with modified nylon suture embolization. The rats were assessed with the Longa standards: 0 point for without nerve dysfunction; 1 for mild neurological deficit (fore claws could no extend completely); 2 for moderate neurological deficit (circling towards the affected side); 3 for severe neurological deficit (tilting towards the affected side); 4 for coma and unconscious; 1-3 points represented that models were successfully established. A SD rat model of thoracic aortic aneurysms

Backgroud Thoracic aortic aneurysm (TAA) disease is a serious condition with both high mortality and morbidity rates associated with surgical therapy. Further understanding of the formation and progression of TAAs may provide novel, less invasive therapeutic strategies in patients with this devastating disease. Aneurysm formation is a complicated, dynamic process involving both cellular and extracellular processes. The mechanisms of TAA formation are poorly understood, mainly due to the lack of a useful and reproducible model. In 2003, Ikonomidis in South Carolina developed a murine model of *** mouse model was less satisfactory because the small size of the murine aorta. The rat model has the advantage of larger aorta and the ability to do more research. Proper animal models are useful to understand the aetiology and evolution and they can be used to evaluate the efficacy of new *** The goal of this study was to test the hypothesis that abluminal calcium chloride application could creat TAAs in the SD *** Eight-week-old male Sprague-Dawley(SD) rats(n=60) were divided into two groups equally. All rats were anesthetized. An angiocath was then advanced through the mouth into the trachea under direct vision and connected to a rodent ventilator set at a respiratory rate of 180 breaths per minute. And their thoracic aortas were exposed via left thoracotomy. In the experiment group,a sponge soaked in 0.5 mol/L CaCl2 was placed on the distal half of the exposed descending thoracic aorta under direct vision. As control group, 0.5 mol/L CaCl2 was instead of 0.9% NaCl. After 15 min, the sponge was removed. Then the chest was closed. At 4,8,12 weeks, all animals undergoing fixation and aortic harvest were reanesthetized and the thorax was then opened beneath the xiphoid process. Study on the Difference of Histological Types and Age Distribution of Lung Cancer Between China and Japan

This paper discussed 378 cases of lung cancer which were identified pathologically in the thoracic department of China Medical University from 1980～1986. The sections were stained with H.E., PAS-ab and Keratin, and compared with sections of 131 cases of lung cancer being confirmed beforehand from 1978～1984. Chinese cases showed epidermoid carcinoma 165 (male 146), adenocarcinoma 136(male 82), small cell carcinoma 29 (male 21), large cell carcinoma 19 (male 15) and the others 29 (male 27); Japanese cases were 59(50), 53(25), 3 (2), 11(10), 3(0) respectively. The cases under 40 years of age were 23(6.1%) in China, 3(2.3%)in Japan. Both of them have similar character of histology. But the incidence of lung cancer in youth is higher in China.

INCREASED CIRCULATING AND RENAL INTERLEUKIN-18 EXPRESSIONS IN PATIENTS WITH LUPUS NEPHRITIS

To explore the role of interleukin-18 (IL-18) in the genesis and progression of lupus nephritis (LN).Methods Expression of IL-18mRNA in peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) and plasma level of IL-18 in 16 normal volunteers and 18 patients with LN were determined by semi-quantity reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) and enzyme-linked immunoabsordent assay (ELISA) respectively. Expression of IL-18mRNA and IL-18 protein in renal tissue also was examined using in-situ hybridization (ISH ) and histoimmunochemical(ICH) staining *** IL-18 was expressed and produced in normal human circulation and renal tissue. IL-18 expression and production were increased significantly in patients with LN (P< 0.001 respectively), either in peripheral blood or in renal tissue. Furthermore IL-18 expression was higher in WHO type-Ⅳ LN patients than in non-type-Ⅳ LN patients(P<0.01 for plasma, P<0.05 for PBMCs and P<0.005 for renal tissue, vs controls).
