BACKGROUND Accreditation processes are extensively employed to guarantee the quality of higher education institutions.However,this process can potentially generate a stressful atmosphere for staff,thus impacting their ability to perform optimally under pressure.AIM To examine the knowledge of the National Commission for Academic Assessment and Accreditation(NCAAA)and its effects on perceived stress among dental college staff before and after the program accreditation process.METHODS The present cross-sectional questionnaire-based study included 300 employees from three dental colleges.The same employees had to fill out the questionnaire 1 mo after the NCAAA process.RESULTS Approximately 51.33%of the included employees believed that NCAAA is essential to attract quality students to join the program before and after the program.A total of 44.67%felt that their stress was high before,and 31.33%had low stress levels before and after NCAAA.These findings were statistically significant(P≤0.05).CONCLUSION NCAAA raised the prestige of the institution and specific programmes and increased prospects to attract better students,staff,and money,according to the employees.In addition to their needed teaching,research,and other service responsibilities,this work requires a tremendous amount of faculty effort and may cause them stress.

Background The COVID-19 pandemic has drastically increased demands on healthcare workers(HCWs)leaving them vulnerable to acute psychological distress,burnout and post-traumatic stress.In response,supportive services in a central London hospital mobilised mental health support specifically for HCWs.Aims This rapid evaluation assessed HCW psychological welfare during the acute phase of the COVID-19 pandemic and their use of supportive services made available.Methods During the acute phase of COVID-19(April to May 2020)all staff working for the hospital were invited to complete an online survey assessing well-being(self-rated health,moral distress exposure,symptoms of burnout and psychological distress)and use of available supportive services(awareness of,use and perceived helpfulness).Associations among personal characteristics and psychological well-being were explored using correlations and linear regression.Results A total of 1127 staff participated in the rapid evaluation.On average,psychological distress was high(mean(SD):22(7.57))regardless of role,with 84%of this sample scoring above the general population mean(14.5).Nearly half of the sample reported feeling emotionally drained and a profile emerged displaying higher levels of psychological distress and burnout in those who were younger and exposed to morally distressing situations,with this group also exhibiting greater support service use.Greater levels of burnout were associated with increased psychological distress when controlling for personal factors.During this acute phase of the pandemic,majority of staff used at least one service and rated it as helpful.Conclusion HCWs experienced high levels of psychological distress requiring continued support as the COVID-19 pandemic evolved.Although HCWs were aware of supportive services,uptake varied.In order to mitigate the risk of burnout and post-traumatic stress,long-term,effective strategies that facilitate staff accessing support are urgently required.

Background Experiencing a pandemic can be very unsettling and may have a negative impact on the mental health of frontline healthcare workers(HCWs).This may have serious consequences for the overall well-being of HCWs,which in turn may adversely affect patient safety and the productivity of the institution.Aims We designed a study to assess the prevalence of generalised anxiety disorder(GAD),depression and work-related stress experienced by the National Health Service staff in a large tertiary London hospital treating patients with COVID-19 during the current active phase of the COVID-19 era.Methods An anonymous survey was designed with demographic data and three questionnaires.The Generalised Anxiety Disorder-7(GAD-7)and Patient Health Questionnaire-9 were used to assess anxiety and depression,respectively.The Health and Safety Executive Management Standards Indicator Tool was used to assess work-related stress.staff from multiple specialties embracing cardiothoracic surgery,cardiology,respiratory medicine,endocrinology,oncology,imaging,anaesthesia and intensive care at our hospital were asked to complete the questionnaire between 25 May and 15 June 2020.Results A total of 302 staff members(106 males and 196 females)completed the survey.The overall prevalence of GAD and depression was 41.4%and 42.7%,respectively.The prevalence of GAD and depression was significantly higher in females than in males and was statistically significant.Nurses were four times more likely to report moderate to severe levels of anxiety and depression as compared with doctors.Work-related stress was also observed to be prevalent in our surveyed population with the following standards:relationships,role,control and change showing a need for improvement.Conclusions Our study presents early evidence suggestive of a high prevalence of GAD,depression and work-related stress in HCWs.It is imperative that coherent strategies are implemented to improve the healthcare work environment during this pandemic and mitigate further injury to the mental

Backgroud COVID-19 pandemic has significantly affected the sleep health of local medical and nursing staff.Aim We used wearable pulse oximeters to monitor and screen the medical and nursing staff working in hospitals designated for COVID-19 in the Wuhan area.This study aimed to establish a reliable basis to provide sleep intervention for the medical and nursing staff.Methods Thirty medical and nursing staff members with symptoms of insomnia were instructed to wear medical ring-shaped pulse oximeters to monitor their sleep overnight.We also used the Insomnia Severity Index(ISI)and the Chinese version of the Self-Reporting Questionnaire(SRQ-20)to evaluate the severity of insomnia and mental health status,respectively,for each participant.Results Among the 30 participants,only 26 completed the screening.Ten cases(38.5%)demonstrated moderate to severe sleep apnoea-hypopnea syndrome(SAHS)when using an oxygen desaturation index^15 times/hour as the cut-off value.Participants with comorbid moderate to severe SAHS had significantly higher ISI and SRQ scores(p values 0.034 and 0.016,respectively)than those in the insomnia group.Correlation analysis revealed that ISI was positively correlated with total sleep time(TST)(r=0.435,p=0.026),and negatively correlated with deep sleep(r=-0.495,p=0.010);furthermore,patient SRQ scores were positively correlated with TST,sleep efficiency(SE)and REM(rapid eyes movement)sleep%(r=0.454 and 0.389,0.512;p=0.020,0.050 and 0.008,respectively).Stepwise logistic regression indicated that SRQ-20 and sex were risk factors for insomnia with comorbid SAHS,and their OR values were 1.516 and 11.56(95%Cl 1.053 to 2.180 and 1.037 to 128.9),respectively.Conclusion Medical and nursing staff with insomnia showed clear signs of comorbid sleep apnoea attributable to stress.The wearable pulse oximeters accurately monitored the participants'breathing when asleep.

The coronavirus disease 2019(COVID-19)pandemic has become a global health crisis.[1,2]Healthcare workers play key roles during the pandemic,but a serious shortage of personnel may occur at peak times.In order to control the rapid spreading of an outbreak,adequate staffing is needed to manage infected patients and to prevent infections of surrounding patients,staff members,as well as the local community.[3]Although there are multiple modes for the organization and deployment of medical staff to deal with the rapidly increasing population of COVID-19 patients,successful experiences from Wuhan,China may prove helpful as a model for effectively dealing with this urgent situation.

To the Editor: Sepsis and septic shock are a leading cause of intensive care unit (ICU) admissions and induce significant morbidity and mortality.[1,2] Early propitiate antibiotics administration is significantly associated with improved survival in sepsis and septic shock[3,4] which is recommended by the international guidelines.[5] However, the compliance to sepsis protocols remains very low.[6] Nurses, who play a vital role in carrying out physician orders, are likely associated with the compliance to empiric antibiotic administration. Phua et al[7] showed that nurses occupy an essential and conscious position as brokers of doctors’ antibiotic decisions. In addition, other studies also demonstrated that nurse-led protocols were an effective, safe, and sustainable method for achieving early antibiotic administration in patients with suspected febrile neutropenia.[8] Therefore, we performed a retrospective cohort study to confirm the effect of nursing staff capacity on the compliance of nurses to empiric antibiotic treatment in patients with septic shock.

Objectives:To investigate the experience of newly graduated registered nurses(NGRNs)in Singapore following their initial 6-12 months of transition from nursing student to registered nurse.Methods:This mixed-methods study consisted of two phases.In the first phase,data were collected via the administration of the online survey to 30 NGRNs.The questionnaire contained 42 items of the fourpoint Likert scale survey.In the second phase,a focus group interview was conducted with 5 NGRNs to gather complementary information regarding the major findings from the first phase.Results:The survey revealed despite most NGRNs(80%)in this study expressed overall satisfied with their transition,the item score was(2.97±0.61)out of 4,the majority(83.3%)also perceived their transition to professional practice being stressful,the item score was(3.07±0.74)out of 4.Three themes emerged from the interview,'personal transition experience','professional transition experience',and'organizational transition experience',which are entwined to construct overall NGRNs'transition experiences.Conclusions:This study reaffirms the theory-practice gap phenomenon.This signifies the need for closer collaboration between educational,healthcare industry and regulatory stakeholders to examine and address factors that influence their transition experience to better support them for workforce readiness.

Analyzing economic feasibility for investing in nursing care: Evidence from panel data analysis in 35 OECD countries

Objective:To analyze economic feasibility for investing in nursing care.Method:The number of practicing nurses'density per 1000 population as a proxy for nursing staff and Gross Domestic Product(GDP)per capita(current US$)were collected in 35 member countries of Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development(OECD)over 2000-2016 period.The statistical technique of panel data analysis including unit root test,cointegration analysis,Granger causality test,dynamic long-run model analysis and error correction model were applied to measure economic impact of nursing-related services.Results:There was a committed bilateral relationship between nurse-staffing level and GDP with longrun magnitudes of 1.39 and 0A1 for GDP-lead-nurse and nurse-lead-GDP directions in OECD countries,respectively.Moreover,the highest long-run magnitudes of the effect nursing staff has on increasing GDP per capita were calculated in Finland(2.07),Sweden(1.92),Estonia(1.68),Poland(1.52),Czech Republic(1.48),Norway(1.47)and Canada(1.24).Conclusion:Our findings verify that although the dependency of nursing characteristics to GDP per capita is higher than the reliance of GDP to number of nurses'density per 1000 population,investing in nursing care is economically feasible in OECD countries i.***.nursing is not only a financial burden(or cost)on health care systems,but also an economic stimulus in OECD countries.Hence,we alert governments and policy makers about the risk of underestimating the economic impacts of nurses on economic systems of OECD countries.

In-flight observations of electromagnetic interferences emitted by satellite

Using the data from staff/TC-1, this paper for the first time analyzes the electromagnetic interferences of Chinese scientific satellite. The electromagnetic interference of satellite exists mainly below 30 Hz, but can extend to 190 Hz with an obviously decreasing power spectral density. The electromagnetic interferences at frequencies below 190 Hz have good correlation with the solar aspect angle. The electromagnetic interferences at frequencies between 190 and 830 Hz have also correlation with solar as-pect angle. However, the electromagnetic interferences at frequencies above 830 Hz have no correlation with the solar aspect angle. The correlation coefficient between solar aspect angel and electromagnetic interferences is around 0.90. The larger the solar aspect angle, the stronger the satellite electromagnetic interference. When the solar aspect angle increases from 90.6° to 93.6°, the electromagnetic interferences at frequencies 100 Hz) of the total electromagnetic interference produced by satellite. These in flight observations of electromagnetic radiation of satellites will be very helpful to the designs of future satellites of space sciences or earthquake sciences.
