Oral administration of Sauce llorón extract to growing lambs to control gastrointestinal nematodes and Moniezia spp.

Objective: To explore anthelmintic effects of oral administration of aqueous extract of Sauce llorón(Salix babylonica; SB) against gastrointestinal nematodes and Moniezia spp. Methods: Sixteen Pelibuey male lambs of 3-4 months of age and(23.7±3.3) kg body weight were used in a completely randomized design to be fed a total mixed ration(Control; SB0), or Control plus SB extract using 20(SB20), 40(SB40) and 60(SB60) mL/lamb/day for 45 days. Lambs had a natural gastrointestinal nematodes and Moniezia spp. infection and had never been treated with chemical anthelmintic drugs. Individual faecal samples were collected for ova counting using Mc Master procedure after 0, 7, 14, 21, 30 and 45 days post extract administration. Results: No extract dose×day interactions for both gastrointestinal nematodes and Monieziaspp. egg count were found. Administration of SB extract had a higher effect(quadratic effect, P=0.0064) at dose of 20 mL SB/lamb/day for gastrointestinal nematode eggs during the first 21 days; however, the dose of SB40 tended(linear effect, P=0.0897) to be more effective than the others for Moniezia spp. egg during the first 7 days. Sampling day had a linear(P=0.0436) effect on Moniezia spp. egg count. Conclusions: The aqueous extract of SB could be more effective against nematodes at 20 and at 40 mL/lamb/day for Moniezia spp. The use of the SB extract could represent a promising alternative to synthetic anthelmintics for the treatment of gastrointestinal nematodes and Moniezia spp. in small ruminants from organic and conventional production systems.

The Asiatic hybrid lily(Lilium spp.)is a horticultural crop with high commercial value and diverse anthocyanin pigmentation patterns.However,the regulatory mechanism underlying lily flower color has been largely unexplored.Here,we identified a WRKY transcription factor from lily tepals,LhWRKY44,whose expression was closely associated with anthocyanin accumulation.Functional verification indicated that LhWRKY44 positively regulated anthocyanin accumulation.LhWRKY44 physically interacted with LhMYBSPLATTER and directly bound to the LhMYBSPLATTER promoter,which enhanced the effect of the LhMYBSPLATTER-LhbHLH2 MBW complex activator on anthocyanin accumulation.Moreover,EMSA and dual-luciferase assays revealed that LhWRKY44 activated and bound to the promoters of gene LhF3H and the intracellular anthocyanin-related glutathione S-transferase gene LhGST.Interestingly,our further results showed that LhWRKY44 participated in light and drought-induced anthocyanin accumulation,and improved the drought tolerance in lily via activating stress-related genes.These results generated a multifaceted regulatory mechanism for the LhWRKY44-meditaed enhancement by the environmental signal pathway of anthocyanin accumulation and expanded our understanding of the WRKY-mediated transcriptional regulatory hierarchy modulating anthocyanin accumulation in Asiatic hybrid lilies.

Crystallization kinetics of syndiotactic polypropylene(spp.was observed by light attenuation measurements. The initial stages of temperature dependent spp.crystallization fall in the range of Rayleigh scattering and Rayleigh-Debye- Gans scattering.Initial time and growth time of crystallization were obtained,and the trend of crystallization temperature dependent linear attenuation coefficient on the radius and the index of the refraction of the spherulite were evaluated.

Anti-encystment and amoebicidal activity of Lonicera japonica Thunb. and its major constituent Chlorogenic acid in vitro

Objective:To examine the acanthamoebicidal effects of ethyl acetate,aqueous and butanol fractions of dried flower buds of Lonicera japonica(L.japonica) Thunb.(Flos Lonicerae) in vitro.Methods:Acanthamoeba triangularis isolates were obtained from environmental water samples and identified by PCR.They were exposed to ethyl acetate,water and butanol fractions of L.japonica Thunb.at concentrations ranging from 0.5 mg/m L to 1.5 mg/m L.The extracts were evaluated for growth inhibition at 24,48 and 72 h,respectively.Chlorogenic acid at a concentration of 1 mg/mL was examined for inhibition of encystment.Results:Ethyl acetate fraction at a concentration of 1.5 mg/mL evoked a significant reduction of trophozoite viability by 48.9% after 24 h,49.2% after 48 h and 33.7% after 72 h Chlorogenic acid,the major active constituent of L.japonica Thunb.at the concentration of 1 mg/mL reduced the cysts/trophozoite ratio by 100% after 24 h,84.0% after 48 h and 72.3% after 72 h.This phenolic compound at concentration of 1 mg/mL concurrent with 0.6% hydrogen peroxide inhibited hydrogen peroxide-induced encystment by 92.8% at 72 h.Conclusions:Results obtained from this study show that ethyl acetate fraction at 1.5 mg/m L is the most potent fraction of L.japonica Thunb.and its major constituent chlorogenic acid showed the remarkable inhibition of encystment at a concentration of 1 mg/mL.

Multidrug resistance Acinetobacter species at the intensive care unit,Aseer Central Hospital,Saudi Arabia:A one year analysis

Objective:To identify and to determine the antimicrobial susceptibility of Acinetobacter baumannii(A.baumannii) clinical isolates from ICU at Aseer Central Hospital.Methods:The study was conducted in the Intensive Care Unit,Aseer Central Hospital,Saudi Arabia over 13 months period(2014-2015).Acinetobacter species(n= 105) were isolated from various clinical samples.Isolates were identified using selected phenotypic criteria and confirmed using the Vitek 2 automated system.This system was used to determine the susceptibilities of 21 antimicrobial agents.Patients,isolates and drug data were analyzed using the SPSS statistical software package to determine some epidemiological and microbiological patterns.Results:Of the 105 stains,A.baumannii accounted for 49(46.67%),A.baumannii complex,19(18.09%),A.baumannii/haemolyticus 32(30.47),Acinetobacter haemolyticus 4(3.81%),Acinetobater lwoffii 1(0.95%) and unidentified Acinetobater species 2(1.3%).Of the 105 Acinetobacter strains,103(98.1%) were found multidrug resistant(MDR).A.baumannii strain were 100% sensitive to colistin and 74.5% to trimethoprim + sulfamethoxazole.The remaining 19 antimicrobial agents revealed low or no sensitivities:amikacin 16.3%; ampicillin 7.7%; ceftazidime 7.3%.Distribution of similar sensitivities was shown by other Acinetobacter species.Mean number of isolates from males and females indicates no statistical variation(P=0.867) whereas age groups showed significant differences(P= 0.008) as it is clear from the high percentage of infected individuals more than 60 years followed by those aged 20 to 29 years old(19.05%).Upper respiratory tract(30.48%),lower respiratory tract(47.65%) and subcutaneous tissue(9.5%) were the main sources of Acinetobacter spp.but mean numbers of isolates from these specimens indicate no discrepancy between specimens(P=0.731).Conclusions:Acinetobacterspecies including A.baumannii were found MDR(98.1%) according to the current Acinetobacter spp.antimicrobial categorization.Approximately half of these strains were A.bauman

Detection of Trypanosoma spp. in Bandicota indica from the Thai-Myanmar border area, Mae Sot District Tak Province, Thailand

Objective:To investigate the prevalence of trypanosome infection and their phylogeny in Bandicota indica rats from the cadmium-contaminated area of Mae Sot and the Myanmar border.Methods:Blood samples were taken from 100 animals,and parasite infection was examined by light microscopy observation and polymerase chain reaction(PCR)studies.Results:Trypanosoma spp.infection was found in 20%of the thin blood smear samples.PCR showed positive 623 bp DNA bands in 21 samples(21%).The sequencing analysis showed that all of the samples(100%)had the Trypanasoma lewisi 18 S ribosomal RNA gene.Phylogenetic analysis confirmed that these 16 isolates of Trypanosoma spp.were closely related to Trypanasoma lewisi.Conclusions:Molecular detection using PCR is as effective as conventional light microscopy analysis.This study confirms that trypanosomal infection in rodents is still high;therefore,fleas as their vectors need to be controlled in order to prevent transmission to humans.

First histopathological study in kidneys of rodents naturally infected with Leptospira pathogenic species from Yucatan, Mexico

Objective: To report the renal histological lesions in synanthropic rodents, Mus musculus and Rattus rattus, naturally infected with Leptospira spp., captured in a rural community in Yucatan, Mexico. Methods: Kidney samples of synanthropic rodents were collected from a rural community in Yucatan, Mexico. Polymerase chain reaction was used to detect Leptospira spp. infection. Tissue kidney was fixed in 10% buffered formalin, processed according to the usual techniques for paraffin inclusion, cut and stained with hematoxylin and eosin, and examined using a conventional electronic microscope. Results: A total of 187 rodents were captured. Nine individuals(4.8%) were positive for Leptospira spp. in the molecular analysis. All renal lesions observed in the histopathological study had been reported previously for Leptospira spp. infection. Conclusions: The histopathological lesions are present in the kidneys, plus the results of the polymerase chain reaction confirm that these rodents are true carriers of Leptospira spp.

Taeniasis:A possible cause of ileal bleeding

Taenia spp.are flatworms of the class Cestoda,whose definitive hosts are humans and primates.Human infestation(taeniasis) results from the ingestion of raw meat contaminated with encysted larval tapeworms and is considered relatively harmless and mostly asymptomatic.Anemia is not recognized as a possible sign of taeniasis and taeniasis-induced hemorrhage is not described in medical books.Its therapy is based on anthelmintics such praziquantel,niclosamide or albendazole.Here we describe a case of acute ileal bleeding in an Italian man affected with both Taenia spp.infestation resistant to albendazole and Helicobacter pylori-associated duodenal ulcers.

SIMULTANEOUS ESTIMATES OF SYNECHOCOCCUS spp. GROWTH AND GRAZING MORTALITY RATES IN THE ENGLISH CHANNEL

The marine chroococcoid phycoerythrin-containing Synechococcus spp.cyanobacterium has been impli-cated as a subsetantial component of the photosynthetic picoplankton in the ocean. Although its imppr-tance as food source for heterotrophic nanoplankton is now recognized, information about the cycling ofSynechococcus biomass and its diel pattern is limited and study methodology varies among authors. Theselective metabolic inhibitor method was used to simultaneously estimate growth and grazing disappearancerates of Synechococcus in the English Channel where growth rates ranged from 0.25 to 0.72/d (mean±SD=0.51±0.17/d) and grazing mortality rates ranged from 0.19 to 0.64/d (mean ±SD=0.48±0.17/d).Size-fractionated experiments demonstrated that up to 70% of Synechosoccus disappearance could be attri-buted to grazers going through a 2 μm Nuclepore filter. Synechococcus grazing mortality rates (mean=0.74±0.25/d) during the day were alwnys higher than that (mean=0.21±0.20d) during the night, while

Cronobacter spp.,foodborne pathogens threatening neonates and infants

Cronobacter spp.(formerly Enterobacter sakazakii) are special foodborne pathogens. Cronobacter infection can cause necrotizing enterocolitis, sepsis and meningitis in all age groups, especially neonates and infants, with a high fatality of up to 80%, although the infection is rare. Outbreaks of Cronobacter infection are epidemiologically proven to be associated with contaminated powdered infant formula(PIF). Cronobacter spp.can resist dry environments and survive for a long period in food with low water activity. Therefore, Cronobacter spp.have become serious pathogens of neonates and infants, as well as in the dairy industry. In this review, we present the taxonomy, pathogenesis, resistance, detection and control of Cronobacter spp.
