TagedPIn February and March 2022,China will host the Beijing 2022 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games.The vision for this landmark event promises a“joyful rendezvous upon pure ice and snow uniting the passion of hundreds of millions for winter Sports”.1 Themes have been developed to create a positive environmental impact with new development for the northern region of the country and to promote winter Sports and improve the health and well-being of the Chinese people.The key messages for the winter games include inspiring youth with the Olympic spirit and encouraging millions to embrace winter Sports.Notably,the Chinese government aims to mobilize at least 300 million of its citizens to engage in winter Sports as an outcome of hosting the Winter Olympic Games.

BACKGROUND Inflammatory bowel disease(IBD)may limit physical activity due to intestinal or extraintestinal manifestations,fatigue,or exercise perception.We sought to evaluate the influence of IBD diagnosis on exercise and Sports participation in a pediatric population.We compared patient-reported and parent-reported perspectives.AIM To evaluate the influence of IBD diagnosis on exercise and Sports participation in a pediatric population.METHODS Consecutive IBD outpatients(aged 10-18 years)and their parents completed parallel voluntary surveys.A validated,patient-reported functional activity scale,the Hospital for Special Surgery Pediatric Functional Activity Brief Scale(HSS Pedi-FABS)was used to assess children’s activity levels.RESULTS There were 149 completed surveys(75%response rate)with mean participant age of 16.5 years[standard deviation(SD)=4.0]and mean age at IBD diagnosis of 11.8 years(SD=3.4).Most patients(77%)were diagnosed within 12 mo of symptom onset.Current athletic participation was reported in 65%across 65 Sports.Participation was greatest before(40%)rather than after(32%)IBD diagnosis,with no reported change in 28%.IBD negatively impacted play/performance in 45%but did not change play/performance in 44%.IBD treatment improved patients’desire to exercise(70%)and subjective capacity for aerobic exercise(72%).Patients and parents agreed that IBD subjects demonstrate normal capacity for aerobic exercise(0.40,95%CI:0.22-0.58)and that treatment improved both participatory desire(0.33,95%CI:0.12-0.54)and capacity for aerobic exercise(0.52,95%CI:0.31-0.71).Almost all(99%)viewed exercise as healthy,and most encouraged its practice.IBD patients demonstrated normal mean HSS Pedi-FABS scores.CONCLUSION After pediatric IBD diagnosis,most patients continue exercise and Sports,with mean activity levels comparable to American youth.Treatment positively impacts participatory desire and aerobic capacity.Patients favor the role of exercise in IBD.

This is a multicentre forensic study that identifies all Sports-related sudden deaths (SRSDs) in young people,due to myocardial diseases (MDs) that occurred in a large area of Spain.The aim of the study is to assess the epidemiology,causes of death,and sport activities associated with these fatalities.This is a retrospective study based on forensic autopsies performed in the provinces of Biscay,Seville,Valencia and in the jurisdiction covered by the National Institute of Toxicology and Forensic Sciences in Madrid (Spain).The retrospective study encompasses from 2010 to 2017.All sudden cardiac deaths (SCDs) in persons 1-35years old were selected.The total number of SCDs were divided into death occurred during exercise (SRSD) and death during rest,sleep or normal activities (non-SRSD).Each of these two groups was subdivided according to the cause of death into MD (primary cardiomyopathies and myocarditis) and non-MD.Clinic-pathological,toxicological and genetic characteristics of SRSD due to MD were analysed.Over the 8-year study period,we identified 645 cases of SCD in the young: 75 SRSD (11.6%) and 570 non-SRSD (88.4%).MD was diagnosed in 33 (44.0%) of the SRSD and in 112 (19.6%) of the non-SRSD cases.All cases of SRSD due to MD were males (mean age (24.0±7.6) years) practicing recreational Sports (85%).SRSDs were more frequent in arrhythmogenic cardiomyopathy (ACM) (37%) and hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM) (24%),followed by myocarditis (15%) and idiopathic left ventricular hypertrophy (ILVH) (9%).Only in five cases of SRSD the MD responsible of death (HCM) had been diagnosed in life.Cardiovascular symptoms related to the disease were present in other seven patients (six of them with ACM).Postmortem genetic studies were performed in 15/28 (54%) primary cardiomyopathies with positive results in 12 (80%) cases.The most frequent Sports disciplines were football (49%) followed by gymnastics (15%) and running (12%).In Spain,SRSD in young people due to MDs occurs in males who perform a recreational activity.Compared

Health benefits of traditional Chinese Sports and physical activity for older adults: A systematic review of evidence

Background: Traditional Chinese Sports and physical activities(PAs) have a long history and are practiced by millions of Chinese. However,relatively few systematic reviews of the scientific evidence for their health benefits, especially for older Chinese adults, have been undertaken.Evidence acquisition: Between January and March 2016, a systematic search was conducted using the CNKI and Pub Med databases to identify studies published between 2000 and 2015. Studies were selected for review if they were designed specifically to evaluate the health benefits of traditional Chinese Sports and PAs in adults aged 50 years and older in the Mainland of China. The studies included observational, uncontrolled,and randomized and controlled designs. Papers published without an English title or abstract were excluded.Evidence synthesis: The initial search identified a total of 229 studies. After removing duplicates and studies that did not meet the inclusion/exclusion criteria, 95 studies were selected for review. Special attention was given to studies of the most commonly practiced activities: Tai Ji Quan,Qigong, and Yangko exercises. A positive association between these types of exercise and health benefits was noted for healthy older adults and those with chronic diseases. Evidence on other types of activities was less clear due to the limited number of studies conducted.Conclusion: There is promising evidence that traditional Chinese Sports and PAs provide many health benefits for older Chinese adults. While additional scientifically rigorous research is warranted, promoting these traditional and culturally-based Sports and PAs as forms of behavioral medicine in primary and secondary prevention of diseases among the aging Chinese population will help fulfill an urgent public health need.

Background: The 2 most cited Sports injury prevention research frameworks incorporate intervention development, yet little guidance is available in the Sports science literature on how to undertake this complex process. This paper presents a generalizable process for developing implementable Sports injury prevention interventions, including a case study applying the process to develop a lower limb injury prevention exercise training program(Footy First) for community Australian football.Methods: The intervention development process is underpinned by 2 complementary premises:(1) that evidence-based practice integrates the best available scientific evidence with practitioner expertise and end user values and(2) that research evidence alone is insufficient to develop implementable interventions.Results: The generalizable 6-step intervention development process involves(1) compiling research evidence, clinical experience, and knowledge of the implementation context;(2) consulting with experts;(3) engaging with end users;(4) testing the intervention;(5) using theory; and(6)obtaining feedback from early implementers. Following each step, intervention content and presentation should be revised to ensure that the final intervention includes evidence-informed content that is likely to be adopted, properly implemented, and sustained over time by the targeted intervention deliverers. For Footy First, this process involved establishing a multidisciplinary intervention development group, conducting 2targeted literature reviews, undertaking an online expert consensus process, conducting focus groups with program end users, testing the program multiple times in different contexts, and obtaining feedback from early implementers of the program.Conclusion: This systematic yet pragmatic and iterative intervention development process is potentially applicable to any injury prevention topic across all Sports settings and levels. It will guide researchers wishing to undertake intervention development.

Dutch version of the Victorian Institute of Sports Assessment-Achilles questionnaire for Achilles tendinopathy: Reliability, validity and applicability to non-athletes

AIM To translate the Victorian Institute of Sports AssessmentAchilles(VISA-A) questionnaire into the Dutch language(VISA-A-NL), and to assess its reliability, validity, and applicability to non-athletes.METHODS After translation according to a forward-backward protocol, 101 patients with complaints of Achilles tendinopathy were asked to fill out the VISA-A-NL at two time points together with visual analogue scale, the Foot and Ankle Outcome Score, and the Short Form-36 questionnaires. Reliability, internal consistency, construct validity, and content validity were tested.RESULTS The VISA-A-NL showed high reliability(0.97, 95%CI: 0.95-0.98). Cronbach's alpha(internal consistency) was 0.80. It increased to 0.88 without activity domain. Correlation with other questionnaires was moderate or poorer.CONCLUSION The VISA-A-NL proved to be an excellent evaluation instrument for the Dutch physician. If applied to nonathletes, using a modified score(questions 1-6) should be considered.
