Various peptide toxins in animal venom inhibit voltage-gated sodium ion channel Nav1.7, including Nav-targeting spider toxin(NaSpTx) Family I. Toxins in NaSpTx Family I share a similar structure, i.e., Nterminal, loops 1–4, and C-terminal. Here, we used Mu-theraphotoxin-Ca2a(Ca2a), a peptide isolated from Cyriopagopus albostriatus, as a template to investigate the general properties of toxins in NaSpTx Family I. The toxins interacted with the cell membrane prior to binding to Nav1.7 via similar hydrophobic residues. Residues in loop 1, loop 4,and the C-terminal primarily interacted with the S3–S4 linker of domain II, especially basic amino acids binding to E818. We also identified the critical role of loop 2 in Ca2a regarding its affinity to Nav1.7.Our results provide further evidence that NaSpTx Family I toxins share similar structures and mechanisms of binding to Nav1.7.

Mercury distribution and bioaccumulation up the soil-plant-grasshopper-spider food chain in Huludao City, China

The purpose of this study is to investigate total mercury （THg） distribution and its bioaccumulation up the soil-plant-grasshopperspider in the Huludao City, which is polluted seriously by chlor-alkali and zinc smelting industry in Northeast of China. Results indicated that average THg concentrations in soil, plant leaves, grasshopper Locusta migratoria manilensis and Acrida chinensis, and spider were 0.151, 0.119, 0.167 and 0.134 mg/kg, respectively. THg spatial distribution suggested that most of mercury came from the chlor-alkali plant and the two zinc smelteries. The highest mercury concentration was found in the wings among different grasshoppers’ organs. Although spiders are the predatory, THg concentrations in their bodies were not high, and only on the same level as in grasshoppers, which might be due to spiders’ special living habits. In the light of the mercury transportation at every stage of the soil-plant-grasshopper-spider food chain, the bioaccumulation factors were 0.03, 0.79–1.11 and 0.80–1.13 respectively. It suggested that mercury biomagnification up terrestrial food chains was not so large and obvious as it was in the aquatic food chain.

Background:spider nevi (SN) are quite common in children. SN are treated via different techniques, and complete removal often requires multiple treatments. However, few studies have evaluated the treatment of SN. The present study aimed to evaluate the therapeutic effect and safety of a 595-nm pulsed-dye laser (PDL) for treating facial SN in children.Methods:A total of 110 children aged 0.2 to 12 years with facial SN were treated with a 595-nm PDL in a single institution from January 2016 to February 2018. In accordance with the treatment method, the patients were retrospectively divided into the small-spot-combined-with-large-spot group (SL-group) and the large-spot group (L-group). Patients with poor therapeutic results were retreated every 6 weeks until the lesions disappeared. The minimum follow-up period was 1 year. The groups were compared using independent-samples t tests, Mann-Whitney U test, Chi-square test, and Fisher exact probability test.Results:The therapeutic efficacy was significantly higher in the SL-group than in the L-group, with clearance rates of 90.9% and 53.0% after the primary treatment, respectively (χ2= 17.937, P spider body diameter ≥1 mm, the once-treatment cure rates were 100% in the SL-group and 34.8% in the L-group (χ2 = 20.780, P spider body diameter spider body diameter ≥1 mm.

As an ancient arthropod with a history of 390 million years, spiders evolved numerous morphological forms resulting from adaptation to different environments. The venom and silk of spiders, which have promising commercial applications in agriculture, medicine and engineering fields, are of special interests to researchers. However, little is known about their genomic components, which hinders not only understanding spider biology but also utilizing their valuable genes. Here we report on deep sequenced and de novo assembled transcriptomes of three orb-web spider species, Gasteracantha arcuata, Nasoonaria sinensis and Gasteracantha hasselti which are distributed in tropical forests of south China. With Illumina paired-end RNA-seq technology, 54 871, 101 855 and 75 455 unigenes for the three spider species were obtained, respectively, among which 9 300, 10 001 and 10 494 unique genes are annotated, respectively. From these annotated unigenes, we comprehensively analyzed silk and toxin gene components and structures for the three spider species. Our study provides valuable transcriptome data for three spider species which previously lacked any genetic/genomic data. The results have laid the first fundamental genomic basis for exploiting gene resources from these spiders.

A clinical and epidemiological study on spider bites in Turkey

Objective:To classify and characterize spider bites among inquiries to the National Poison Information Center(NPIC) between 1995 and 2004,in terms of the epidemiology and clinical symptomatology.Methods:Clinical and epidemiological data were obtained from the NPIC’s patient records.The following information was recorded for each spider bite:demographics, circumstances of the bite,and local and systemic effects.Results:A total of 82 cases were reported.The accidents were mostly seen during August.The gender distribution was 59.76% male,37.20%female,and 2.44%unknown and the 20-29 age group presented more spider bites. Most of the cases were in the Central Anatolia,Marmara,Mediterranean,and Black Sea regions. Local symptoms were observed in 60.87%of the cases,including local pain,edema,redness, itching,debris,burning,and numbness.Systemic symptoms were observed such as nausea, vomiting,abdominal pain,lethargy,anxiety,weakness,somnolence,dyspnea,hypertension, hypotension,and hyperthermia.Conclusions:In conclusion,these findings emphasize the presence of medically important spider species in Turkey.All patients and especially pediatric patients should be admitted to the hospital.Identification of spider species may be considered a useful clinical and epidemiological tool in determining the incidence and risk of spider bites.

Birds caught in spider webs in Asia

A recent global review of birds caught in spider webs reported only three Asian cases. Given this surprisingly low number, I made a concerted effort to obtain additional Asian cases from the literature, the internet, and field workers. I present a total of 56 Asian cases which pertain to 33 bird species. As in the global dataset, mostly small bird species were caught in spider webs, with a mean body mass of 17.5 g and a mean wing chord length of 73.1 mm. Conse?quently, birds with a body mass >30 g were very rarely caught. This Asian review corroborates the global review that smaller birds are more likely to be caught and that Nephila spiders are most likely to be the predators. Continuous monitoring of spider webs is recommended to ascertain the frequency of these events.
