High-precision, clay sediment oxygen and hydrogen isotopes analyses of Pleistocene-Holocene deep-sea sediments from the Bay of Bengal （BOB） are presented for the first time. Our study shows that the major source of sediments in the study area, since the last-25 000 years, is likely to be the Higher Himalayan crystalline rocks. Further, the study of these stable isotope data displays the variation of southwest monsoon （SWM） in the BOB region since the last-25 000 years and the cause behind the variation has been interpreted. The δ 18 O values of the clay sediments are compared with δ 18 O values of the BOB seawater. This comparison shows that the clay sediment δ 18 O values of the studied sediment cores temporally vary along with the changes in strength of the SWM. Based on the changes in the clay sediment δ 18 O values of the studied sediment, we evaluate the variance in the SWM since the last 25 000 years in the BOB. Our results are consistent with previous work in the region based on other proxies. To evaluate the factors influencing the intensity of the SWM since the last glacial maxima, we conducted comparative analyses of the studied clay sediment δ 18 O values with δ 18 O values in the Greenland ice cores （GISP2） and Tibetan ice cores （Guliya）. The results from this comparative study show that large-scale changes in the intensity of the SWM since 25 000 years are affected by the climate oscillations of the Northern Hemisphere, but rapid and abrupt fluctuations in the SWM seem to be controlled by the amount of snow cover in the Tibetan Plateau.

Based on the long-term marine ship observation data, records of meteorological stations and High-Reflective Cloud(HRC) data by satellite remote sensing , this paper has studied the circulation patterns and variability in elements during onset and the established periods of the South China Sea(SCS) southwest(SW) monsoon. The averaged date of the onset SW monsoon in the SCS occurs in the middle of May climatologically. The corresponding date for the northern part is little earlier (May 12) and those for the southern parts are little later (May 20). The interannual range of the onset dates is about one month. Following the onset of the SW monsoon, the cloud amount and the precipitation increase while the convection activities enhance over the SCS. But there is a strong spatial heterogeneity within the domain. After onset of the SW monsoon the strong convective area moves northwards, while the SCS rain band moves to the center and north. Sea surface temperature(SST) increases rapidly before the onset and the leading time is about one month. The increment of SST supplies heat and vapor for the onset. From April to May the surface heat fluxes display obvious changes, e.g., latent heat exchange and evaporation enhancement. It is one of the reasons why the SW monsoon bursts firstly in the SCS.

The activity of South China Sea southwest monsoon (SCSSM) has direct impacts on the anomalies of important weather in Guangdong province during the raining seasons. So it is necessary to explore thoroughly the activity pattern of SCSSM and its relationship with important weather anomalies in the province. In this paper, the methods of composite analysis and correlation statistics are used to study the relationship between the onset date and intensity of SCSSM and the important weather, such as precipitation trends in Guangdong province during the annually first and second raining seasons, the timing of the annually first and last typhoon and the number of typhoons landing in Guangdong province. The results show that the rainfall is less than normal during the first raining season, but more than normal during the second one and there are more tropical cyclones landing in Guangdong province in the years of early SCSSM onset. The rainfall is more than normal during the second raining season and there are more tropical cyclones landing in Guangdong province in the years of strong SCSSM. The relationship between the SST of April - June, July - September and previous winter (December - February) and 500 hPa geopotential height and the onset date and intensity of SCSSM is analyzed. Some mechanisms between the onset dates and intensity of SCSSM and the important weather anomalies in Guangdong province are preliminarily explored. The results can be used for reference in short-term climate forecast.

Sri Lanka,a small island country located near the southernmost end of the Indian subcontinent,is controlled by the southwest monsoon(SWM)during May to September,when it suffers the most accumulated rainfall in a *** with extensive studies on the intraseasonal oscillation(ISO)of the Indian monsoon,less attention has been paid to the ISO of the SWM over Sri *** on observational data,this study reveals that the leading mode of SWM rainfall shows a significant variability on a 10-35-day time scale,and it accounts for 66%of the fractional *** development of the intraseasonal rainfall anomaly is associated with a westward propagating anomalous cyclonic ***,the skill of current dynamic models in simulating the SWM on the subseasonal time scale was evaluated by using the ECMWF(European center for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts)reforecast data from S2S(the Subseasonal to Seasonal Prediction project).In general,the model is more skillful in predicting the monsoonal wind index than the monsoonal rainfall index,with the skill for the former being beyond 30 days and the latter about two *** forecast skills exhibit prominent interannual differences for both *** is suggested that a correct simulation of the large-scale circulation response to tropical convection is crucial for the subseasonal prediction of monsoonal rainfall over Sri Lanka.

Using the NCAR/NCEP（National Center for Atmospheric Research/National Centers for Environmental Prediction）reanalysis and the NOAA Climate Prediction Center’s merged analysis of precipitation（CMAP） during 1981–2000,we investigated the seasonal evolution of the southwesterly wind and associated precipitation over the eastern China–subtropical western North Pacific area and its relationship with the tropical monsoon and rainfall,and analyzed the reasons responsible for the onset and development of the *** was found that the persistent southwesterly wind appears over southern China and the subtropical western Pacific the earliest in early spring,and then expands southwards to the tropics and advances northward to the *** winter to summer,the seasonal variation of surface heating over western China and the subtropical western Pacific may result in an earlier reversal of the westward tropospheric temperature gradient over the subtropics relative to the tropics,which may contribute to the earliest beginning of the sub-tropical southwesterly ***,the strengthening and eastward expanding of the trough near the eastern Tibetan Plateau as well as the strengthening and westward moving of the western Pacific subtropical high also exert positive influences on the beginning and development of the subtropical southwesterly wind. In early summer,the northward expansion of the southwesterly wind over southern China is associated with a northward shift of the subtropical high,while the southward stretch of the southwesterly wind is associated with a southward stretch of the trough in the eastern side of the *** the beginning and northward expansion of the subtropical southwesterly wind（namely southwest monsoon）,convergences of the low-level air and water vapor and associated upward motion in front of the strongest southwesterly wind core also strengthen and move northward,leading to an increase in rainfall intensity and a northward shift of the

Based on MC-ICP-MS U-series dating and stable O-isotope analysis results, a 4―5 years resolution monsoon record over the past 1000 years has been estab- lished for two stalagmites from Dongge Cave, Guizhou. The high resolution oxygen isotope record serves as a proxy for variations in rainfall of Asian southwest monsoon over the Yunnan-Guizhou Plateau. A close relation of the δ 18O record with the ?14C record from tree rings largely reflects impact of centennial-scale solar activity on the monsoon climate changes. The conspicuous decrease in the δ 18O value at AD 1720 indicates an abrupt increase in monsoon rainfall, sug- gesting that an atmospheric-oceanic couple over the tropical Indian Ocean plays an important role in rapid increase of the Northern Hemisphere temperature over the last century.

El Nio or La Nia manifest in December over the Pacific and will serve as an index for the forecasting of subsequent Indian summer monsoon,which occurs from June to *** the present article,an attempt is made to study the variation of latent heat flux (LHF) over the north Indian Ocean during strong El Nio and strong La Nia and relate it with Indian monsoon *** strong El Nio the LHF intensity is higher and associated with higher wind speed and lower cloud *** El Nio all India rainfall is having an inverse relation with *** rainfall is higher in YY+1 (subsequent year) than YY (year of occurrence).However there is a lag in rainfall during El Nio YY+1 from June to July when compared with the monthly rainfall.

Analysis of the Impact of Nepal＇s Giant Earthquake on China＇s Climate in 2015

The situation of a great earthquake in Nepal from April to May in 2015 was described, and the abnormal atmospheric circulation and cli- mate when the great earthquake occurred were analyzed. Because of the great influence of the great earthquake on the atmosphere, the atmos- pheric circulation and climate in the late stage of Nepal will be affected. The great earthquake had transient effects on China＇s climate. Firstly, tem- perature from the ground to high altitudes increased abnormally; secondly, after the occurrence of the great earthquake, extremely low pressure generated in the earthquake region, and cold and warm airflow converged, so that heavy rainfall occurred to the southwest of the plateau. Thirdly, it cut off southwesterly airflow transporting water vapor to regions south of the Yangtze River, so that hot and dry weather appeared in the regions in late April. Moreover, the great earthquake affected China＇s climate in a short term. Nepal＇s giant earthquake increased zonal circulation cell at lat- itudes, and the circulation cell could make subtropical high over Western Pacific strengthen and extend westward to control regions south of the Yan- gtze River, so that hot and dry weather appeared in regions south of the Yangtze River in summer. In the next year after the great earthquake oc- curred, the earthquake is conducive to the strengthening and maintaining of Meiyu zone in the Yangtze River basin, and large floods will appear easily in the Yangtze River basin.
