Record-breaking summer-autumn drought in southern china in 2022:Roles of tropical sea surface temperature and Eurasian warming

From summer to autumn in 2022,a severe drought lasted in southern china,posing serious effects on economic growth and ecological *** study explored the atmospheric circulations accounting for this persistent drought *** shows that the drought in southern china during the summer of 2022 was strongly linked to the divergence of water vapor flux and descending motions,which were respectively caused by the anomalous anticyclone over the western North Pacific and the northward movement of the East Asian subtropical jet(EASJ).Differently,the atmospheric background responsible for the sustained drought in autumn is manly featured by a cyclonic circulation anomaly over the region from the Bay of Bengal to the South china Sea,which led to decreased moisture and descending motions in southern *** investigation suggests that the rarely strong surface warming over northern Eurasia and the extreme La Nina-like pattern over the tropical Pacific jointly resulted in the anomalous anticyclone over the western North Pacific and the northward shift of the EASJ in the summer of 2022,while the cyclonic circulation anomaly prevailing over the region from the Bay of Bengal to the South china Sea in autumn was largely attributed to the extremely negative anomalies of the tropical Indian Ocean sea surface temperature.

Differences in spring precipitation over southern china associated with multiyear La Ni?a events

Composite analyses were performed in this study to reveal the difference in spring precipitation over southern china during multiyear La Ni?a events during 1901 to 2015. It was found that there is significantly below-normal precipitation during the first boreal spring, but above-normal precipitation during the second year. The difference in spring precipitation over southern china is correlative to the variation in western North Pacific anomalous cyclone(WNPC), which can in turn be attributed to the different sea surface temperature anomaly(SSTA) over the Tropical Pacific. The remote forcing of negative SSTA in the equatorial central and eastern Pacific and the local air-sea interaction in the western North Pacific are the usual causes of WNPC formation and *** in the first spring is stronger than those in the second spring. As a result, the intensity of WNPC in the first year is stronger, which is more likely to reduce the moisture in southern china by changing the moisture transport, leading to prolonged precipitation deficits over southern china. However, the tropical SSTA signals in the second year are too weak to induce the formation and maintenance of WNPC and the below-normal precipitation over southern china. Thus, the variation in tropical SSTA signals between two consecutive springs during multiyear La Ni?a events leads to obvious differences in the spatial pattern of precipitation anomaly in southern china by causing the different WNPC response.

Controlling factors of marine shale gas differential enrichment in southern china

Based on the exploration and development practice of marine shale gas in Fuling, Weiyuan, Changning, Luzhou and Southeast Chongqing in southern china, combined with experiments and analysis, six factors controlling differential enrichment of marine shale gas are summarized as follows:(1) The more appropriate thermal evolution and the higher the abundance of organic matter, the higher the adsorption and total gas content of shale will be.(2) Kerogen pyrolysis and liquid hydrocarbon cracking provide most of the marine shale gas.(3) The specific surface area and pore volume of organic matter rich shale increased first and then decreased with the increase of thermal evolution degree of organic shale. At Ro between 2.23% and 3.33%, the shale reservoirs are mainly oil-wet, which is conducive to the enrichment of shale gas.(4) The thicker the roof and floor, the higher the shale gas content. The longer the last tectonic uplift time and the greater the uplift amplitude, the greater the loss of shale gas will be.(5) The buried depth and dip angle of the stratum have different controlling and coupling effects on shale gas in different tectonic positions, resulting in two differential enrichment models of shale gas.(6) The effective and comprehensive matching of source, reservoir and preservation conditions determines the quality of shale gas accumulation. Good match of effective gas generating amount and time, moderate pore evolution and good preservation conditions in space and time is essential for the enrichment of shale gas.

Function of Soils in Regulating Rainwater in southern china: Impacts of Land Uses and Soils

One of the most important functions of soils is to regulate rainwater and mitigate flooding and associated damages; this function can be estimated by the rainwater regulation ratio （η）, i.e., percent of regulated rainwater. Fifteen experimental plots were set up on the hills in Yingtan of Jiangxi Province, southern china. These plots were under three land use patterns, cultivated cropland, noncultivated land, and orchard interplanted with cash crops. With aid of an artificial rainfall simulator and Guelph method, rainfall, runoff, soil infiltration, and so on were measured in situ. Results showed that the orchard interplanted with cash crops was more effective in regulating rainwater than the other two land use patterns. When the maximum infiltration intensity was three times higher than the observed mean,η was higher than 70% for all plots. 77 was related to land use, slope gradient, and soil properties such as soil infiltration, organic carbon, bulk density, and texture. There is still more room to improve capacity of rainwater drainage （underground percolation） than that of rainwater storage in soils. Therefore, enhancing soil permeability is vital to improve the rainwater regulation efficiency in soils.

Seismic ground motion relationships in southern china based on stochastic finite-fault model

The characteristics of seismic ground motions in southern china are difficult to determine statistically due to a lack of strong ground motion *** this study,a stochastic finite-fault ground motion model was adopted to simulate the seismic ground motions at bedrock for southern china,based on parameters derived from small and medium earthquakes that have occurred in the *** these,the response spectra was estimated.A set of ground motion attenuation relationships was then developed based on simulated peak ground motions and response spectral parameters through regression,which would be applicable for use in engineering *** comparisons,it was demonstrated that the proposed ground motion relationships are generally consistent with those obtained from other reported ground motion attenuation models for southern china.

An unprecedented high temperature event in southern china in autumn 2021 and the essential role of the mid-latitude trough

Studies about high temperatures in china rarely touched the period beyond *** in September-early October 2021,a record-breaking high temperature event occurred in southern china,and affected agriculture in many *** the daily maximum temperature and the number of high temperature days were the highest in September since *** better understand the different features and possible causes of the extreme event in autumn from those in summer,the analysis of atmospheric circulation patterns was *** western Pacific subtropical high(WPSH)was quite stronger and extended much more westward in most of the days in September 2021 than its climatology,which directly caused this unprecedented autumn high temperature ***,the mid-latitude trough over the east of Japan may also play an essential role in this high temperature *** to the southward extension of the trough,a cyclonic circulation anomaly appeared at 850 hPa,and its northerly wind component prevailed in the west of the trough and blocked the eastward retreat of the *** a result,southern china was stably controlled by the WPSH,which led to the persistence of this high temperature *** conclusion is further confirmed by the statistical results from the analysis of the multi-year data and analogue *** to the previous studies,this study reveals the essential role of the mid-latitude trough and highlights the joint impacts of the WPSH and the trough in causing the unprecedented autumn high temperature event.

Evaluating the grassland net primary productivity of southern china from 2000 to 2011 using a new climate productivity model

Grassland is the important component of the terrestrial ecosystems. Estimating net primary productivity （NPP） of grassland ecosystem has been a central focus in global climate change researches. To simulate the grassland NPP in southern china, we built a new climate productivity model, and validated the model with the measured data from different years in the past. The results showed that there was a logarithmic correlation between the grassland NPP and the mean annual temperature, and there was a linear positive correlation between the grassland NPP and the annual precipitation in southern china. Al these results reached a very signiifcant level （P〈0.01）. There was a good correlation between the simulated and the measured NPP, withR2 of 0.8027, reaching the very signiifcant level. Meanwhile, both root mean square errors （RMSE） and relative root-mean-square errors （RRMSE） stayed at a relatively low level, showing that the simulation results of the model were reliable. The NPP values in the study area had a decreasing trend from east to west and from south to north, and the mean NPP was 471.62 g C m？2 from 2000 to 2011. Additionaly, there was a rising trend year by year for the mean annual NPP of southern grassland and the tilt rate of the mean annual NPP was 3.49 g C m？2 yr？1 in recent 12 years. The above results provided a new method for grassland NPP estimation in southern china.

Precipitation Microphysical Characteristics of Typhoon Ewiniar(2018) before and after Its Final Landfall over southern china

In this paper, the evolution of the microphysical characteristics in different regions(eyewall, inner core, and outer rainbands) and different quadrants [downshear left(DL), downshear right(DR), upshear left(UL), and upshear right(UR)]during the final landfall of Typhoon Ewiniar(2018) is analyzed using two-dimensional video disdrometer and S-band polarimetric radar data collected in Guangdong, china. Due to the different types of underlying surfaces, the periods before landfall(mainly dominated by underlying sea surface) and after landfall(mainly dominated by underlying land surface) are also analyzed. Both before landfall and after landfall, the downshear quadrants had the dominate typhoon precipitation. The outer rainbands had more graupel than the inner core, resulting in a larger radar reflectivity, differential reflectivity, specific differential phase shift, and mass-weighted mean diameter below the melting layer. Compared with other regions, the eyewall region had the smallest mean logarithmic normalized intercept parameter before landfall and the smallest mean mass-weighted mean diameter and the largest mean logarithmic normalized intercept parameter after landfall. The hydrometeor size sorting was obvious in the eyewall and inner core(especially in the eyewall) after landfall. A high concentration of large raindrops fell in the DL quadrant, and more small raindrops fell in the UR quadrant. Although the icephase process and warm rain process were both important in the formation of tropical cyclone precipitation, the warm rain process(ice-phase process) contributed more liquid water before landfall(after landfall). This investigation provides a reference for improving the microphysical parameterization scheme in numerical models.

Stable isotopes of summer monsoonal precipitation in southern china and the moisture sources evidence from δ^18O signature

Summer monsoons （South Asian monsoon, South china Sea monsoon and Subtropical monsoon） are prominent features of summertime climate over southern china. Dif- ferent monsoons carry different inflow moisture into china and control the temporal and spatial distributions of precipitation. Analyses of meteorological data, particularly wind, tempera- ture and pressure anomalies are traditional methods of characterizing moisture sources and transport patterns. Here, we try to utilize the evidence from stable isotopes signatures to trace summer monsoons over southern china. Based on seven CHNIP （Chinese Network of Iso- topes in Precipitation） observatory stations located in southern china, monthly composite precipitation samples have been collected and analyzed for the composition of δ^18O during July, 2005. The results indicated that the spatial distributions of δ^18O in precipitation could properly portray the moisture sources together with their transport pathways. Moreover, the amount effect, altitude effect, temperature effect and the correlation between δ^18O vs. relative humidity were discussed.
